Just a Reminder That FedEx Doesn’t Give a Crap About Your Packages

It can be FedEx. It can be UPS. It can be any shipping service, really. They all promise to get your packages to where you want them to go but there’s no guarantee they’ll treat your packages with any sort of tender, love or care. Most likely, they’ll be thrown around, banged around and destroyed in the process. Just look at this FedEx employee have fun tossing FedEx packages into her truck. I can see the appeal of chucking boxes but doesn’t this just create chaos and add more work later?

JPMorgan Chase Weighs Sale Of Physical Commodities Units Amid Controversy

JPMorgan Chase, the largest U.S. bank, said Friday it may sell its prized physical commodities business, just three years after it aggressively expanded into the sector, as authorities probe whether big banks are using their holdings of raw materials to manipulate commodities markets.

JPMorgan said it may sell or spin off assets ranging from raw materials such as oil and copper to warehouses that store aluminum and other metals, energy tolling agreements, interests in power plants and wind farms, trading operations, and assets used to transport the commodities. The bank said it will continue to provide financial products tied to commodities, such as derivatives, and will continue to house and trade precious metals such as gold.

The surprise announcement follows a July 16 Huffington Post story that detailed how a coalition of beer brewers such as MillerCoors, automakers, and other companies that depend on metals, including Boeing, Coca-Cola, Dr. Pepper Snapple Group and Reynolds Consumer Products, has accused big banks, including JPMorgan and Goldman Sachs, of manipulating the aluminum market, costing consumers billions of dollars in unnecessary charges and fueling regulatory concerns on both sides of the Atlantic. The allegations prompted a Senate probe into Wall Street’s expansion into the commodities business as concerns multiply over whether the broader economy is being hurt by banks using important raw materials to benefit their bottom lines.

Barnaby Jack, renown hacker, dies at 35

Barnaby Jack, a prolific hacker hailing from New Zealand, has unfortunately passed away in an apartment in San Francisco at the age of 35. The cause of death has not been revealed, but a spokesperson for the local police did say that foul play was not a factor. Jack was scheduled to attend the Black Hat conference next week, an hour of which will now be dedicated to his memory instead.

During the event next week, Jack was supposed to demonstrate how one can hack into implanted defibrillators and pacemakers, exposing vulnerabilities in the technology. According to Reuters, which interviewed the hacker earlier this month, he’d stated his method could “kill a man” with the implanted technology up to 30 feet away.

Although he had dabbled in many categories, Jack is perhaps best known for a hack called Jackpotting, which involves a demonstration of the hacker causing ATMs to dispense bills. He had also worked at identifying vulnerabilities in medical devices that could prove dangerous, and has received praise from individuals, companies, and even government agencies for his efforts.

Jack worked at McAfee and other places, with the last being IOActive Inc., a consulting firm that focused on cyber security. The cause of death will be reported in one month, according to the police spokesperson, following an autopsy. According to Reuters, his sister confirmed his passing, but did not provide details.

Stuart McClure, a security industry executive and colleague of Jack, said to Reuters in a statement: “He was passionate about finding security bugs before the bad guys. He was one of those people who was put on this earth to find vulnerabilities that can be exploited in a malicious way to hurt people.”

Former HBO Exec Chris Albrecht: James Gandolfini ‘Changed My Life’

Tony Soprano was a TV game changer.

Without “The Sopranos,” there would arguably be no “Breaking Bad,” no “Mad Men,” no “Dexter” and no “Game of Thrones.” The HBO mob drama, fronted by the late James Gandolfini, raised the bar, leading the entertainment industry to see that small screen content could be as good as if not better than the more prestigious movie medium.

Current Starz CEO Chris Albrecht was a big part of that transformative stage of TV at HBO as the cable network’s former chairman and CEO. His leadership ushered in a wide-range of critically acclaimed series like “Sex and the City,” “Six Feet Under,” “Band of Brothers,” “The Wire” and, of course, “The Sopranos.”

Ford engineer builds vibrating shift knob using 3D printer and an Xbox 360 controller (video)

Ford engineer builds a vibrating shift knob with a 3D printer and an Xbox 360 controller

You’re not going to find it in the next car you drive off the lot, but a Ford engineer has developed a fairly novel approach to making a manual transmission a bit easier to adjust to: a vibrating shifter knob. As he explains in the video after the break, Zach Nelson first turned to an Xbox 360 controller for the necessary vibrating mechanism, which he then stuffed into a 3D-printed knob along with an Arduino controller and an LED display.

When fully assembled, the knob is able to communicate with the vehicle’s on-board diagnostic system using Ford’s open source OpenXC software platform, and vibrate to let you know when you need to shift gears. As Wired notes, the knob can even be used by more experienced drivers to pinpoint exactly when to shift to get either the most performance or the best fuel economy. We also expect a booming business in custom shifter designs to start any minute now.
