Nintendo 3DS XL black model arriving next month alongside Mario & Luigi: Dream Team

It seems as if this moment couldn’t come any sooner, as Nintendo is finally releasing a black version of their 3DS XL handheld gaming system. Nintendo has previously released colored models with black trim and such, but this will be the first all-black version to hit retail, and it’s coming on the same day as the release of Mario & Luigi: Dream Team on August 11.

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard about an all-black version, though. It popped up in a couple of leaked ads last week, hinting to the possibility that we would see it arrive sometime soon. And without surprise, here it is to grace the hands of Nintendo 3DS fans with a new color to choose from.

As for Mario & Luigi: Dream Team, the game will see Mario going into Luigi’s dreams in an effort to rescue Princess Peach, who has been kidnapped (obviously). While Nintendo keeps beating a dead horse with its Princess Peach kidnapping storyline, they sure do find different ways for Mario to rescue her.

If black isn’t quite your color, the 3DS XL comes in several other colors as well, including red, blue, and pink, as well as special editions featuring Pokemon’s Pikachu and designs for Animal Crossing: New Leaf. No word on if the black version will have a different price point, but it’ll most likely be priced at the same $200 as other color choices.

Apple Patent Describes Using Three Sensors To Improve Photo Color Quality

Apple Patent Describes Using Three Sensors To Improve Photo Color Quality

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office granted a new patent to Apple today. Titled “Image capture using luminance and chrominance sensors,” the patent describes using three sensors to improve photo color quality in a mobile device. Out of these three, one sensor would be for luminance whereas the other two would be for chrominance, this would allow the camera to capture better color detail in photos taken through the mobile device.

Chrominance define’s an object’s color whereas luminance is the measure of amount of light that an object reflects. Luminance from the first and chrominance from the other two sensors would be combined to form a single image in which colors would be reproduced in a much better way. This means that the result of that photograph would be unlike what today’s iOS devices are capable of. Apple has already been granted another patent earlier this month which describes combining two or more sensors in a mobile device in order to improve photo quality. As is the case with patented technologies, one can’t be sure when the technology will be implemented in future devices. [Image via CNET]

SkyDrive.com gets a slew of photo and sharing upgrades

SkyDrivecom gets a slew of photo and sharing upgrades

Just about a week after rolling out offline file access, Microsoft’s file hosting service is getting a number of updates. This time the features are rolling out to SkyDrive.com, starting with support for devices with high DPI. The site will detect and match photos and thumbnails to the resolution of your display. Also on the docket is photo rotation and the ever-important ability to view animated GIFs in their full stop motion glory. There are also a couple of updates on the sharing side of things, including the ability to share individual groups of files from anywhere in your account, while a new shared view shows files you’ve shared at the top and stuff that’s shared with you below. Oh, and when you send someone a document now, recipients can edit it without having to sign in. All of those upgrades and more can be checked out in further detail at the source link below.

Helikite balloons can hoist emergency LTE network after natural disaster

'Helikite' balloons can hoist emergency LTE network after natural disaster

We know, we know, Google has the whole hot air balloon thing covered. But this idea is a bit different. It consists of a group of “helikites,” or small load-bearing balloon-kite hybrids, which can quickly be launched to form a network of LTE or WLAN masts up to an altitude of 2.5 miles, providing data coverage following an earthquake or tsunami. A standalone rugged suitcase, or “Portable Land Rapid Deployment Unit,” contains everything needed for activation in tough conditions. Researchers behind the project, including German R&D firm TriaGnoSys, have even found a way to integrate the temporary network with existing cell towers that remain in tact on the ground — a feature that makes the system suitable not only for emergencies, but also for expanding mobile coverage during planned events in remote locations. Of course, the helikites would eventually drift apart and lose connectivity, probably after around four days depending on the wind, but these things never travel quite as far as you’d expect.

Thomson Reuters Twitter Account Gets Hacked

Thomson Reuters Twitter Account Gets Hacked

Thomson Reuters is a well known and respected media firm. Unfortunately, they too have been victim of a cyberattack. Over the past few months Twitter accounts of various media outlets have been hacked, including that of the Associated Press. On Monday, the Thomson Reuters Twitter account was suspended after it had been hacked and a series of tweets containing political cartoons were posted. It is believed that the notorious Syrian Electronic Army is behind this hack.

The SEA was in the news just last week, after it hacked Viber’s database and defaced their website. They have been involved in hacking Twitter accounts of prominent media outlets in the past as well. However, their own Twitter feed doesn’t mention that they hacked @thomsonreuters, its unorthodox because the SEA takes to its Twitter feed to let everyone who what activity they’ve successfully completed. As of now the Thomson Reuters account stands suspended, a company spokesperson has said that they are investigating the hack. SEA’s MO includes widespread phishing attacks through e-mail, it is likely that someone at Thomson Reuters accidentally fell victim to an e-mail phishing attack.

HTC One Performing Better Than Last Year’s HTC Flagship Smartphones

HTC One Performing Better Than Last Years HTC Flagship Smartphones

The HTC One didn’t get off to a good start. Manufacturing delays meant that the smartphone could not be released when it was supposed to, it also meant that after that delayed release, it had to face direct competition from Samsung’s latest flagship, the Galaxy S4. Nevertheless, the HTC One has received praises from consumers and critics alike, there’s no doubt about the fact that HTC has got a winner on its hands. In a statement released today, the Taiwanese manufacturer said that the One has performed better in the market than any of the flagship smartphones they released last year. However, HTC did not provide specific sales figures for the One.

The company says that with the help of this device they have “regained market share across major markets including China.” There are two HTC One variants being sold in China, the other being the dual-SIM variant. HTC looks to extend this same momentum in the second half of 2013. The company also said that it has plans to launch a “range of innovate and competitive mid-tier products in the coming months.”

Credit card skimmers now more sophisticated than ever

Credit and debit card skimmers are nothing new — they’ve been around for quite a while, but they’re getting better and better, to the point where it takes a few months until someone figures out that a skimmer was implanted on an ATM or gas pump. Today’s skimmers are more sophisticated than ever, and the attention to detail that hackers provide is pretty impressive.

Skimmer1_2

One of the latest skimmer frauds happened in Oklahoma, where thieves installed their cards skimmers on several gas pumps and waited for drivers to pull up to fill up their tank. In just a couple of months, the thieves rounded up $400,000, by using the stolen card information at ATMs, and withdrawing cash.

However, the skimmers only worked on debit cards, not credit cards. The thieves used a card skimmer and a fake PIN pad overlay in order to get the PIN number for the associated debit card. The thing is though, the fake overlay looked so real, that it took a couple of months before people became suspicious.

Security expert Brian Krebs says that gas pump skimmers “have moved from analog, clunky things to the level of workmanship and attention to detail that is normally only seen in ATM skimmers.” Investigators said that the skimmer technology used in this situation was “way more sophisticated than anything they’ve seen previously.”

The crazy part about these new, sophisticated skimmers is that they use Bluetooth for remote access, so the thieves never have to physically interact with the skimmer after it’s installed, and they can live off of the power from the gas pumps themselves, so they’ll never run out of juice. This is why it’s probably best to use a credit card at the pump, but it’s also important to make sure everything looks legit, since pumping gas is almost second nature to drivers.
