Oppo confirms new N-Lens series to challenge Samsung’s Galaxy Camera

Oppo confirms new NLens series to challenge Samsung's Galaxy Camera

We were a bit skeptical when Android Authority claimed earlier this month that Oppo’s developing a camera-centric device, but as it turns out, this is really happening! Today, a company representative confirmed to us the name of Oppo’s new product line: N-Lens. The focus here will obviously be on photography, and it’ll apparently be the “most important flagship series for Oppo going forward.” Luckily, the cellular part is here to stay, so these N-Lens cameras — likely powered by Android — will be connected; but we’re not sure whether you can also make phone calls with them.

No further details were provided (especially not a release date), but Android Authority’s scoop already gives a rough idea on what to expect: a high-resolution camera with great low-light performance. You can also just about see the above slide referring to the “Samsung Galaxy Camera” (which has since been superseded by the Galaxy S4 Zoom), so Oppo seems keen to ride on this wave started by the Korean giant. If you want, it’s a bit like how the Chinese company spotted the upward trend in local girls taking selfies early on, which led to the Ulike 2 with its 5-megapixel front-facing camera. But of course, with the arrival of Nokia’s Lumia 1020, it’s not going to be an easy fight.

16 Names NASA Considered For The 1980s Space Station That Never Was

During his 1984 State of the Union speech, President Reagan announced that the U.S. would build a new permanently manned space station within a decade. The Space Shuttle program was underway, and a permanent space station seemed like the next logical step in our bold push into the final frontier. It didn’t hurt that the Russians were already working on Mir, and America didn’t want to look like it was resting on its laurels.

iOS 7 beta 4 download goes live for developers

Apple has released iOS 7 beta 4 to developers, the latest iteration of the pre-launch iPhone and iPad software expected to make its public debut later this year. The new version, which arrives three weeks after Apple released beta 3, can be downloaded either directly to an iPhone or iPad running the existing version, or loaded via your Mac.

iphone_ios_7

Last time around, Apple tweaked several aspects of the iOS 7 experience, including modifying the default font to change the overall feel of the UI across the board. It also improved how Retina iPhone apps were handled on non-Retina iPads in “2x” doubling mode.

2013-07-29

Apple’s release notes for this new beta are not yet available, and in fact the company’s developer portal itself continues to show error messages. That’s been a long-standing issue over the past few weeks, however, though it’s likely to become more contentious today as keen coders attempt to get up to speed with beta 4.

However, most likely are performance improvements and the sort of general tweaks a fourth-stage beta might be expected to deliver. What’s apparently unlikely to change is the somewhat contentious interface and color scheme Apple has switched to in iOS 7, which has left some iPhone and iPad users nostalgic for the “skeuomorphic” layout used today.

A full changelog of the new additions and modifications in iOS 7 beta 4 is likely to be fleshed out over the coming hours, as developers get to grips with the software. As for regular users, the timescale for the new platform’s release is still the somewhat nebulous “later in 2013″, though it’s expected to take place alongside the launch of a new iPhone 5S and perhaps a cheaper variant of the smartphone.

Update: The first changes are being reported, including a modification to the lockscreen “slide-to-unlock” control, the ability to swipe between Notification Center panels, the ability to put all music tracks on shuffle, and more.

Toshiba Haswell Sees Action In Refreshed Satellite U And M Notebooks

Toshiba Haswell Sees Action In Refreshed Satellite U And M NotebooksYes, we do know that Intel’s latest generation Haswell processors do not offer so much of a jump in speed and performance, but rather, it intends to deliver improved battery life to your notebook, and earlier this month, we did touch on a story about notebooks from Toshiba that will run on the Haswell platform. Well, as the calendar arrives at July 29th, here we are with word that Toshiba’s Satellite U and M range in the UK has received a refresh, with the Satellite U50t touted to arrive with a 10-point touchscreen display and Windows 8 as the operating system of choice, while the Satellite M50D and M50Dt will run on AMD’s latest APU processors and Radeon graphics.

The entire range that has been tipped for a Q3 release will ship alongside Intel’s fourth generation Haswell processors and HD 4400 graphics, although there is always the option of settling for NVIDIA’s GeForce GT 740M if you need that added graphical firepower (and have some cash to spare alongside, too). Other hardware specifications include Intel WiDi and Miracast technologies within, accompanied by a full-size HDMI port, Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity, a couple of USB 3.0 ports, and an SD memory card slot. Unfortunately, Toshiba has remained mum on its pricing details.

Samsung reportedly looking to engineer new ARM-compatible Exynos processor

Samsung reportedly looking to engineer new ARMcompatible Exynos processor

It’s a material world, and Samsung’s just living in it. And, evidently, it’s tired of doing things in the same manner it has been. According to a report from ETNews, the aforesaid company is looking to produce an Exynos processor using a “redesigned ARM core platform” that’ll be whipped up in Samsung’s Austin, Texas-based R&D facility. If the plans materialize, it’ll mark the first time that Samsung has engineered an Exynos chip “based on its own architecture platform by redesigning the ARM cores.” For those unaware, Qualcomm and Apple are amongst the precious few that have concocted their own platforms after inking an architecture licensing deal with ARM, and it sounds as if Sammy’s tired of being on the outside looking in. The report also states that development is expected “to be completed early next year,” and you can bet that future Galaxy and Note products will be the first to benefit.

Toshiba Satellite U and M notebooks go Haswell in full refresh

Intel has inspired another full refresh in Toshiba’s Satellite M and U laptop lines, this time bringing on touchscreen capabilities as well. Both notebook lines now work with up to 16GB RAM (2 x 8GB slots) and 39.6cm (15.6″) HD displays, kicking out up to 7 hours of battery life, the whole lot of them. They’re both coming with DTS Studio Sound audio enhancements across their speaker systems for loud, powerful music and media as well.

This line works with 2 x USB 3.0 ports, one of them working with Sleep-and-Charge. They’ve also got a single USB 2.0 port, one HDMI 1.4 with 3D TV support, and full-sized SD card slot. Inside you’ve got Bluetooth 4.0 technology as well as Miracast support for standardization in display mirroring. That comes with Intel Wireless Display technology as well.

The Toshiba Satellite U50t Ultrabook line works with 4th generation Intel Core processors for Ultrabooks paired with Intel HD Graphics 4400. This device works with a ten-point touchscreen display without option for a non-touch display, and comes in at 377.5 x 249.5 x 21.3mm. This unit comes with up to 1TB HDD and weighs in at 2.3kg at its lightest.

Meanwhile the Toshiba Satellite M range comes in three configurations: M50, M50D, and M50Dt. Users will have options for 4th generation Intel Core processors or the newest in new AMD APU processors, these paired with Intel, NVIDIA, or AMD graphics. That’s Intel HD Graphics 4400, NVIDIA GeForce GT 740M with 2GB VRAM graphics, or AMD Radeon HD graphics (this final option for AMD models only).

The Toshiba Satellite M family works with touchscreen abilities optionally, the whole collection paired with up to a 1TB HDD, weighting in at 2.1kg at least. Each of these notebooks is the same size as the U50t at 377.5 x 249.5 x 21.3mm.

The full range works with Wi-Fi (802.11 b/g/n) as well as Gigabit LAN, so you’ll be connecting at full speed. Every notebook in this article is also being promised by Toshiba for the third quarter of 2013, prices unknown as yet.

An Alleged Galaxy S4 Explosion Completely Destroyed This Apartment

An Alleged Galaxy S4 Explosion Completely Destroyed This Apartment

It’s one thing if your phone bursts into flames and cooks up your leg-meat real bad, but that’s nothing compared to losing your whole apartment in an inferno. That’s exactly what a Hong Kong man claims happened to him while he was just plugging away at Love Machine (an app, not a euphemism) on his Galaxy S4.

Companion Cube Cat House (or Is It a Storage Cube?)

This is the Catpanion Cube, a feline residence made by Instructables member/Aperture Science vet/cat slave Rachael Whitaker. I hear that when you place your cat inside, she’ll be simultaneously dead and alive, stuck inside the dimension that the Portal gun uses to generate shortcuts. When you place your dog inside, he’ll just poop in it.

Rachael made the Catpanion Cube out of foam padding and some fabric. She held the Cube’s walls together using pins and thread. The Cube doesn’t sing though.
