It’s not quite Armageddon but NASA revealed a concept video animation detailing how NASA would find, capture, re-direct and study a near-Earth asteroid. In the animation by NASA, you can see a crew of astronauts taking off on the Orion spacecraft and using the Moon to swing onto the captured asteroid.
Android Open Source Project now has latest 4.3 fixes for most Nexus hardware
Posted in: Today's ChiliThe latest Android 4.3 updates brought a slate of unfortunate software bugs to the party and to Google’s own Nexus devices, ironically enough. Thankfully, the Mountain View crew is hard at work patching things up, as evidenced by the Nexus 7 update earlier today that resolved its multi-touch and GPS issues. Now those fixes are up on AOSP as well, not only with the aforementioned JSS15Q build for the 7-inch tablet, but also the JWR66Y for the rest of the recent Nexus clan. The reasoning behind having two fixes instead of one was the addition of an extra bit of code unique to the Nexus 7; they’ll be incorporated into one patch as soon as the devs work out the kinks. Aside from patching those aforementioned bugs, the update resolved a clipboard crash issue, tweaked App Opps permissions and fixed a few extra bits of errata. If you’re not afraid of a bit of tinkering, head on over to the source to update your Nexus hardware now, or just wait for Google to release Android 4.3.1.

Windows 8 users tend to be polarized on one particular issue – the lack of a Start Menu. Some don’t mind its absence, but others have taken issue with the choice and sought alternatives. One such alternative has been SweetLabs’ Pokki replacement menu, something that Lenovo will begin including pre-loaded on its Windows 8 PCs. […]
Composite lighting technique lets amateurs produce well-lit photos in minutes (video)
Posted in: Today's ChiliHobbyist photographers don’t often have the luxury of elaborate lighting rigs. However, Adobe and Cornell University have developed a new software technique that could bring pro-grade illumination to a wider audience. Known as computational lighting design, the solution simplifies a familiar trick that combines shots taken with a camera’s external flash placed in different positions. The software uses multiple sample photos to create composite images that emphasize color, edge lighting and fill lighting; editors just have to balance those three light values to get the desired effect. While the code is still unpolished, it’s good enough that even beginners can produce well-lit masterpieces in less than 15 minutes. Adobe believes that the technique could reach future versions of apps like Lightroom or Photoshop, so don’t be surprised if still-life photography catches on in the near future.

Detroit Receives Less Federal Money Than All Of These Foreign Nations (INFOGRAPHIC)
Posted in: Today's ChiliThe nation of Colombia receives more federal aid than bankrupt Detroit… and it’s not the only country getting more cash from the feds.
Even though the Motor City murder rate is almost twice as high as Colombia’s, the federal government still sends almost three times as much money to the Latin American nation. Though several Detroiters have questioned whether a bailout is needed to save the city, the Obama Administration has made no moves to pay off any of the city’s estimated $18 billion debt.
Next City Columnist Bill Bradley posted an infographic titled “Detroit vs. the World,” which helpfully points out every single country around the world that receives more federal dollars than Detroit.

California Gov. Jerry Brown (D) has no intention of releasing state prisoners convicted of nonviolent drug offenses, despite a federal court order requiring the state to reduce its prison population by the end of the year, sources told HuffPost.
Instead, Brown and legislative leaders are discussing a proposal to create an unconventional partnership between the state’s powerful prison guard union and the nation’s largest private prison corporation — an alliance that may permanently expand California’s prison system while curbing nascent efforts to reduce the state’s mass incarceration of nonviolent offenders.
Under the plan, one of several the governor has proposed in conversations with legislative leaders in recent weeks, the for-profit prison giant Corrections Corporation of America would lease one or more of its prisons to the state, which would in turn use California prison guards and other public employees to staff the company’s facilities.

Veterinary student Liz Pendleton was browsing Craigslist on Saturday when she came across an ad that prompted her to immediately get in the car and go on a 90-minute drive.
Titled, ‘Dog needs gone or shot (sic),’ the ad threatened to kill the German Shepherd mix by the end of the day if no one showed up to claim him, Fox 2 reports.
