Elliptic Labs releases ultrasound gesturing SDK for Android, will soon integrate into smartphones

Elliptic Labs releases ultrasound gesturing SDK for Android, will soon integrate into smartphones

Elliptic Labs has already spruced up a number of tablets by adding the ability to gesture instead of make contact with a touchpanel, and starting this week, it’ll bring a similar source of wizardry to Android. The 20-member team is demoing a prototype here at CEATEC in Japan, showcasing the benefits of its ultrasound gesturing technology over the conventional camera-based magic that already ships in smartphones far and wide. In a nutshell, you need one or two inexpensive (under $1 a pop) chips from Murata baked into the phone; from there, Elliptic Labs’ software handles the rest. It allows users to gesture in various directions with multiple hands without having to keep their hands in front of the camera… or atop the phone at all, actually. (To be clear, that box around the phone is only there for the demo; consumer-friendly versions will have the hardware bolted right onto the PCB within.)

The goal here is to make it easy for consumers to flip through slideshows and craft a new high score in Fruit Ninja without having to grease up their display. Company representatives told us that existing prototypes were already operating at sub-100ms latency, and for a bit of perspective, most touchscreens can only claim ~120ms response times. It’s hoping to get its tech integrated into future phones from the major Android players (you can bet that Samsung, LG, HTC and the whole lot have at least heard the pitch), and while it won’t ever be added to existing phones, devs with games that could benefit from a newfangled kind of gesturing can look for an Android SDK to land in the very near future.

Samsung Galaxy Gear Will Support Galaxy S3 And Galaxy Note 2 As Well

Samsung Galaxy Gear Will Support Galaxy S3 And Galaxy Note 2 As WellDuring IFA 2013 in Berlin, Samsung announced a smartwatch of the company’s making called the Samsung Galaxy Gear, a device which would presumably be compatible with devices like the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and the Samsung Galaxy S4, which is unsurprising given that the Galaxy S4 is Samsung’s flagship handset of 2013. In any case we’re sure some Samsung customers are wondering if support for older devices will be added as well, and the good news is that yes, Samsung will be adding compatibility support with the Galaxy Gear with older devices like the Samsung Galaxy S3 and the Galaxy Note 2.

However it should be noted that at the launch of the device, compatibility will only be with the Galaxy Note 3. Samsung is expected to issue an update in the future which would add support to the Galaxy S4, Galaxy S3, and Galaxy Note 2, although users of these devices might be in for a wait, at least until the end of the year which is when Samsung hopes to issue the updates by. We’re not sure if limiting the support of device compatibility is a great way to kick off a brand new product, but what do you guys think?

Dell Venue 8 Android Tablet Spotted At WiFi Certification Website

Dell Venue 8 Android Tablet Spotted At WiFi Certification WebsiteWe had heard that Dell was working on new Windows-based tablets, but it seems that Dell might have other platforms in mind, thanks to a brand new WiFi certification that has revealed the existence of a certain Dell Venue 8 tablet that will be powered by Android, which is according to the certification as seen in the screenshot above. As it stands not much is known about the Dell Venue 8 tablet running on Android, apart from the fact that it has WiFi b/g/n connectivity, and if the screenshot above is accurate, will run on Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean.

While not confirmed, the “Venue 8” name might also imply that the tablet could come in an 8” form factor, although its exact size remains unknown. It has also been speculated that there is a good chance that Dell could choose to use the Intel Bay Trailer processor for this upcoming tablet, possibly the Atom Z3740 clocked at 1.33GHz, or the Atom Z3770 clocked at 1.5GHz. Either way we’re not sure if and when Dell will announce this device, but if you’ve been a fan of Dell’s products and wouldn’t mind see the company attempt to break into the Android tablet market, be sure to check back with us at a later date to see if there are any additional details that can be had.

    GTA Online Is Now Live

GTA Online Is Now LiveLast we heard Rockstar’s latest game, Grand Theft Auto 5, will be getting a DLC update in the form of Grand Theft Auto Online, and that the update will be arriving on the 1st of October and sure enough it has. The update has started to make its way onto consoles and will be available for download via Sony’s PlayStation Network and Microsoft’s Xbox Live, with the update coming in at 59MB. GTA Online will allow GTA gamers to come together in the GTA world, which we guess could be thought of as an MMO of sorts, and making it a first for Rockstar, at least as far as the Grand Theft Auto franchise is concerned.

According to Rockstar, it is expected that the first few weeks of the update’s release could be spent by the developers tuning the game in order to make the experience a good one for you. What this means is that gamers can expect to find bugs and glitches within the game, which is expected from brand new launches, so don’t be put off if you find any, but rather just report it to Rockstar who will look into it and issue an update for it eventually. GTA Online will allow up to 16 gamers to play together simultaneously and allow them to participate in missions together, or simply get together and tear it up. More information on the update can be found on Rockstar’s blog, but in the meantime keep your eyes peeled for the update on your console!
