Nokia Lumia 525 Announced

Nokia Lumia 525 AnnouncedIt’s probably common knowledge by now that the Nokia Lumia 520 is Nokia’s most popular Windows Phone handset to date. In fact it seems that it is probably the most popular Windows Phone handset so far, so we guess it’s to no surprise that Nokia has announced a successor in the form of the Lumia 525. We had heard rumors about the Lumia 525 for a while now and even had its specs leak not too long ago, but we guess it looks like things are official at last.

While there’s no word on pricing or availability, it seems that for now the Lumia 525 will be headed for Africa, the Middle East, and the Asia Pacific region, but it is unclear as to whether those of us living stateside will be seeing it. Then again the Lumia 520 was launched in the US as T-Mobile’s Lumia 521, so it wouldn’t be a surprise if Nokia decided to release a variant for the US as well. In terms of the specs, the earlier leak appeared to be on point.

The Lumia 525 will feature a 4” display and will sport a 5MP rear-facing camera without a flash, similar to the Lumia 520. The main difference would probably be its RAM which has since been doubled to 1GB. It will be powered by a dual-core Qualcomm S4 processor and will feature swappable covers like previous Lumia models.

TellSpec Is A Pocket-sized Device That Will Tell You What’s In Your Food

With so many articles these days about health and the kind of food we put into our bodies, we’re sure some of you guys are starting to become concerned, if you weren’t concerned already. There are also times when reading the label simply isn’t enough as there could be some ingredients left out, which is what TellSpec is hoping to do for you. Put together by Isabel Hoffman and her friend, Stephen Watson, TellSpec is a small device that could fit into your pocket that you can take with you to scan food items, after which it will report back a reading on your smartphone as in some of the ingredients that goes into it.

This is not for dissecting recipes, but rather a means to identify any chemical ingredients that might not be healthy, as well as identifying things such as gluten or nuts which are allergens for some people. It can also be used to find out if a food produce is truly organic as its manufacturer claims. TellSpec will work alongside a smartphone app that will break down the ingredients. This is done by beam a low-powered laser at the food items, and after a few seconds will spit back the results. As it stands TellSpec is an Indiegogo project that has long surpassed its initial funding goal, but if you’d like to pledge or learn more, hit up its Indiegogo page for the details, or check out the video above.

Modder Behind Skyrim’s Falskaar Mod Lands A Job At Bungie

We’re not sure if you recall, back it was back in July that a Skyrim modder by the name of Alexander J. Velicky (and with the help of his team, of course) created the Falskaar mod which was such a huge undertaking that it took him a year to complete and was almost like an expansion on its own. The goal of the mod was to prove to Bethesda that Velicky had it in him to be part of the company and help them create games in the future. Unfortunately Bethesda did not end up hiring him, but instead Velicky has landed a job at Bungie, who for those unfamiliar, were the developers responsible for the original Halo franchise, and also responsible for the upcoming Destiny game.

Velicky announced this on the Bethesda forums where he stated that he had recently accepted a position as an Associate Designer at Bungie, and basically thanking the modding community for their support thus far. Given that he will be taking up a new job, no doubt some are wondering about the fate of the Falskaar mod and if there will be any updates and improvements in the future. According to Velicky, “Again, still entirely possible. I still have some plans that may very well come to fruition. It all depends on after I settle in if I have the time and will to continue.” In any case congratulations to Alexander J. Velicky, you definitely deserve this!

BlackBerry Announces BBM Partnership With Several Android OEMs

BlackBerry Announces BBM Partnership With Several Android OEMsWhile BBM is pretty established as far as messaging apps are concerned, it does have some pretty stiff competition in the form of WhatsApp, LINE,Viber, and etc., all of which have established themselves on iOS and Android operating systems for years. Well it looks like BlackBerry could be making up for lost time as the company has recently announced that they have managed to partner up with several Android manufacturers who will ensure that the BBM app, as far as Android devices are concerned, will come preinstalled on said devices.

According to BlackBerry’s press release, these OEMs are from the Africa, India, Indonesia, Latin America and the Middle East region, with names that some of you guys may or may not be familiar with such as, Be, Brightstar, Celkon, EVERCOSS, IMO, Micromax, Mito, Snexian, Spice, TECNO, TiPhone and Zen. While BlackBerry would undoubtedly benefit greater from partnering with companies such as Samsung, HTC, Motorola, LG, and Sony, who are some of the bigger names in the Android industry, we guess this is a good start and perhaps in the future more Android OEMs will be hopping aboard the BBM bandwagon.

Verizon’s Redbox Instant now supports AirPlay streaming

Verizon’s subscription streaming TV service, Redbox Instant, now supports Apple’s AirPlay thanks to a new version 1.4 iOS app update — with some caveats. For starters, though you’ll be able to play streaming content on your iOS 6 device, the app doesn’t support downloaded material as yet. Also, your viewing may be broken off if you receive texts and certain notifications, if you lock the device or if you quit Redbox to use another app. Meanwhile, AirPlay Mirroring, which lets you play from your device with your TV as a second screen, will still work just fine. Other tweaks include the usual bug fixes and improvements to the recommendations engine. So, if you’ve got Apple TV and want to give it a whirl, hit the source — just make sure to tell your pals not to contact you mid-film.
