Awesome Dad Makes Geeky Alphabet Blocks for His Son

When you have a newborn son and want to give him some cool toys, I can’t think of anything better than making something yourself. That’s what Jonathan G. did here, making these cool laser-engraved wood blocks for his child.

He started his work on them before the baby was even born, but didn’t finish until his son’s first birthday. Look at the image here and you will see why. These are some nicely detailed alphabet blocks, clearly made with love. There are 36 blocks in all. They cover the English alphabet and ten digits, showing 134 images of people, animals, monsters, robots, vehicles, organizations, devices, tools, and objects from some of our favorite movies, TV shows, books, comics, video games, and more.

Great job, Jonathan. It looks like your son’s geek education is off to a great start.

This Digital Stethoscope Can Spot Extra-Subtle Heart Murmurs

Physicians have been successfully diagnosing heart conditions using just their stethoscopes and ears for years now. But how many particularly subtle issues, like heart murmurs, have gone unnoticed? With the ViScope MD from HD Medical Inc., hopefully none ever do. It adds audio filters, a visual readout, and automatic murmur detection to a standard stethoscope to enhance what doctors already hear, ensuring nothing gets missed.

Petnet Raises $1.125M To Make A Smart Food Dispenser For Your Furry Friends

Petnet SmartFeeder

Los Angeles-based startup Petnet announced today that it has landed a $1.125 million seed round from Grishin Robotics, Kima Ventures, SparkLabs Global Ventures, and Launch Capital. Petnet (a different company from the Australian pet supply seller of the same name) will use the investment to commercialize its first product, the Smartfeeder, which is scheduled to ship to customers in the middle of this year.

Over the last few years, the pet care industry has proven to be relatively recession-proof. According to statistics from the American Pet Products Association, spending on pet products has continued to grow steadily, even after the global financial crisis in 2008. In 2013, spending in the U.S. hit an estimated $55.53 billion, with most of that amount, or $21.26 billion, going toward food.

The pet care market is also growing around the world and was expected to hit $96 billion in sales by the end of 2013, according to analysis firm Euromonitor.

Pet owners are willing to pamper their fur babies even if it means making financial cuts in other areas. In fact, some animals might be getting a little bit too much pampering. The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention says that an estimated 54 percent of dogs and cats in the U.S. are overweight or obese, due in large part to overfeeding.

Roly-poly animals are cute, but the extra weight can lead to long-term health problems, like diabetes, heart or kidney disease, joint conditions, and cancer. These conditions not only cause vet bills to mount up, but also reduce a pet’s quality of life and can ultimately shorten its lifespan.

Pet food dispensers already for sale that seek to address overfeeding include the Petmate Le Bistro Portion-Control Automatic Pet Feeder, which uses a timer, as well as the Gatefeeder, a dispenser that uses a Smart ID attached to collars to figure out when to release cat food.

Petnet appPetnet wants to differentiate by creating a pet feeder that taps into the Internet of Things. The $199 SmartFeeder features “intelligent sensor technology, learning algorithms, and processing power that assesses the dietary requirements of a pet, creates a custom feeding schedule to meet those requirements, alerts pet owners when their pet has been fed and even reminds owners to purchase more food when they run low,” says the company. Demand appears to be strong so far. Petnet has already received over 10,000 pre-orders for the SmartFeeder.

The SmartFeeder joins a growing roster of pet care supplies and accessories, including Bluetooth LE-enabled pet tracker Puppy, and toys like Petcube and Egg that are all controlled by an online app.

Petnet received initial funding while participating in Bolt, a seed-stage fund and incubator in Boston for hardware startups. In addition to commercializing SmartFeeder, the company says it will use its seed round to enhance the product’s technology, hire more people, and develop other projects. Petnet CEO Carlos Hererra, who grew up in L.A., also wants Petnet to mentor high school students in the Los Angeles Unified School District.

In a statement, Dmitry Grishin, founder of Grishin Robotics, an investment company, said “Even the simplest things around us are quickly becoming robots these days. Through unique combinations of powerful hardware, smart software, and internet-connectivity, Petnet is a perfect example of this trend. I am confident in the company’s ability to successfully tackle the worldwide pet health challenge and disrupt the multi-billion dollar industry.”

‘Star Wars,’ Nintendo collide: ‘Super Smash Wars 2: The Empire Smashes Back’

(Credit: Video screenshot by Leslie Katz/CNET)

Luke Skywalker isn’t the only one who knows how to wave around a lightsaber. Link, Princess Peach, Donkey Kong, Toad, Yoshi, and more beloved Nintendo video game characters are transformed as “Star Wars” characters in “Super Smash Wars 2: The Empire Smashes Back” Part 1 and Part 2 by Oklahoma-based animator and director James Farr.

“‘Star Wars’ and Nintendo are both incredibly dear to my heart and have always had some interesting narrative overlap,” Farr told Crave. “Eventually, I knew, somebody would think to do this. And I wanted to be the one to do it first — and (do it) right.”

There’s something rather charming in seeing AT-AT walkers driven by Super Stars. Plus, Donkey Kong plays Chewbacca; Yoshi is a tauntaun (that luckily does not die); Pikachu is the patient Yoda; and Sonic the Hedgehog is a suave Lando Calrissian.

CyberNotes: The Best Vista Sidebar Gadgets

This article was written on December 10, 2007 by CyberNet.

CyberNotes
Microsoft Monday

We’ve looked at Windows Vista Sidebar gadgets before, but it seems every time I go back to the gallery of gadgets, there’s always at least one or two that I haven’t seen before that impress me. Today we’ll be looking at three of the best Vista sidebar gadgets I’ve come across lately including XM Online Radio Gadget (perfect for all of you XM radio users), Wp-corp Mail Checker (for checking up to five different email accounts), and Auction Sidebar Tool for eBay (a necessity for eBayers).

XM Online Radio Gadget

The XM Online Radio Gadget is by far one of the most useful gadgets that I’ve seen.  I listen to XM radio all throughout the day while I’m working, so you can see why this has come in handy.  Previously I accessed XM Radio online through Windows Media Player which was nice, but it wasn’t as convenient as I wanted it to be for a couple of reasons.  First, I’d have to open Windows Media Player and leave it open to listen to XM but secondly, there wasn’t an option to remember my login and password. It got a bit tedious after a while to enter in a user name and password any time I wanted to listen to music. This gadget takes care of both of the minor complaints I had about accessing XM Radio Online.

Features:

  • Once you enter your name and password, it will remember it so you don’t have to enter it in each time you want to listen to the radio
  • Access the channel list right from the gadget
  • Displays the channel you’re on and the artist that sings the song

Obviously you have to have a paid subscription with XM Radio in order to be able to use the gadget.  I noticed that some people that left comments in the Gadget Gallery were complaining because they assumed if the gadget was free, so was the XM service. XM does offer an online only subscription which is $7.99 per month or you can get the full subscription and use it with an XM Radio device and listen online.

Below you’ll see a screenshot of what the gadget looks like in the sidebar. I clicked to view the channels, and they pop-out to the left:

Wp-corp mail checker

Wp-Corp Mail Checker is my new favorite service for checking my mail because I can set it up to check multiple accounts. It’ll work for any POP3/ IMAP4 with SSL email accounts which means it does work with Gmail. There are a few bugs here and there, but all around I’d say it’s an awesome gadget for checking your mail. Once you install it, you’ll go through the process of configuring your accounts – you can have up to five.

wp mail checker

There are several configuration options including selecting the number of accounts you’re going to use. You’ll also be able to determine how often you want it to check your email. Options range from one minute to one hour. There are a few other options as well like selecting “mailbox glow.” If you decide to use the mailbox glow, you’ll see a glow around the box in the gadget when you have a new message. You can also opt to show the mail date. As you can see below, I have two different email accounts setup. When you click to view the unread mail, it will pull-up all of the messages from your inbox in a pop-out window as shown below.

wp mail checker 2

My only complaint with this gadget is that if you trash a message, it will remove the email from your inbox but it actually archives it instead of actually deleting it.

Here are a few things to make sure you do while setting it up if you’re using a Gmail account:

  • Mail Protocol: Select IMAP and SSL from the dropdown lists
  • Server address is imap.gmail.com and the port should be changed to 993
  • Make sure you choose how many headers you want it to retrieve otherwise it won’t work

Auction Sidebar Tool

The Auction Sidebar Tool for eBay is perfect for anybody who buys or sells on eBay. You can either use it as a basic search tool, or you have the option of using it in an advanced mode where you can manage your whole eBay account right from your sidebar. If you want to get notified when you get a new message, you can get notified through this gadget as well. When you’re initially setting up the gadget, you’ll have the option to show items that you’re watching, selling, and bidding on.  You’ll also be able to select a skin that suits your tastes.

After you’re done with the setup process, you’ll have to sign in to your eBay account. The sign-in page will open in your browser at which point you’ll enter in your user name and password.  Then you’ll be required to authorize the gadget to access the info in your account by simply clicking ” I agree.”

ebay gadget

If you search for an item, you can either have the results open in a window in your browser, or you can select to have the results appear in a gadget flyout (shown above) which I prefer.  If you click on a result within the searches, there are tabs for the overview of the listing, the description, pictures, and shipping and policies so that it’s easy to navigate as shown below.

Can LED LCD look as good as plasma?

(Credit: Geoffrey Morrison/CNET)

For many years now, plasma televisions have been the standard for picture quality and value. Sure, there have been some great-looking LCDs, but for the best overall image, the best plasmas couldn’t be beat. Now plasma is going away for good.

OLED certainly can beat plasma, but we’re still years away from OLED TVs being affordable.

In the meantime we’re stuck with LCD. So is it possible, through various tricks and advancements, for LED LCD to look as good as plasma? Maybe.

Before we get started, it’s worth taking a look at LED LCD vs. OLED vs. plasma to see how each technology breaks down.

Contrast ratio By far the single most important aspect of the overall picture quality of an image, contrast ratio is the difference between the brightest part of an image and the darkest. An LCD screen can get much brighter than plasma, and can also create a very dark image. But it has a tough time creating bright … [Read more]
