Most smartphone users know that your shiny new device won’t stay shiny and new very long if you don’t use some sort of protection film on the screen. If you slip an unprotected smartphone into your pocket along with keys or other small items, odds are you’ll pull it out with scratches all over the display. While most screen protector films are only designed to reduce scratches, or reduce glare a new project promises to do more than keep scratches away.
Temasek Polytechnic (TP) and A*STAR’s Institute of Materials Research and Engineering’s (IMRE) have announced a new nano-engineered screen protector that is able to turn ordinary handheld device screens into 3-D displays. A company called Nanoveu Pte Ltd will market the new screen protector film. The company says that this unique plastic film could also be used as next-generation security tokens by banks and corporations.
By adding this new nano-engineered screen film to your smart device, any display on a smartphone or tablet becomes a glasses-free 3-D accessory able display content in portrait or landscape modes. The film is said to be less than 0.1 mm thick. The company behind the film says that is a piece of plastic with about half a million perfectly shaped lenses engineered onto its surface using a proprietary nanoimprinting technology.
To go along with the special screen film, the company has also developed two apps with one for Android and one for iOS. These applications allow users to convert normal 2-D photos into 3-D content. The company also plans to release a software development kit allowing game developers to convert existing games into 3-D versions. The development team is also working on using the same technology to decode PIN numbers sent online as a cheap or alternative to bulkier and more expensive battery-operated security tokens. The company offers no timeline on when the film and related applications will be available.

I remain quite jealous that my house can’t get access to the incredibly fast Google Fiber Internet service or the Google Fiber TV service. I understand living in a more rural area likely means I’ll never have access to impressive services like this. If you do happen to live in Kansas City and have access to Google Fiber TV and happen to be one of the few that has a 3-D TV in your home, the TV offering from Google now has two new 3-D channels to check out.
Google announced yesterday that its Fiber TV service has its first 3-D channels that include 3net and ESPN3D. The rollout of the 3-D channels began yesterday and subscribers can get 3net including with some existing packages on channel 338. The premium ESPN3D channel will require an additional subscription and another five dollars per month.
The cheapest TV package that gets access at no additional cost to 3net is the Gigabit + TV Plan. That plan costs $120 per month. Google says 3net has a lot of original 3-D programming such as shows on natural history, documentarians, action/adventure films, kids and family titles, concerts, scripted series, movies, and more.
ESPN3D is “the industry’s first 24/7 3-D sports network,” according to Google. There has to be at least one or two people living in Kansas City that have access to Google Fiber, subscribe to Google TV, and also have a 3-D TV to take advantage of these two channels. Actually, there may not be.

Panasonic has created a 3-D camera system capable of recording panoramic 3-D images. The idea is that the system would allow people to visit exotic locations around the world where they might not actually be able to travel themselves. The 3-D panoramic images promise to allow people to feel like they’re actually at the location more than they would with a normal flat photograph.
Panasonic’s system was exhibited at the Digital Content Expo 2012 in a display called Dive into World Heritage 3-D. The system works by shooting an image with five 3-D cameras at the same time. The system then shows the images using five high-definition plasma display panels.
The Panasonic 3-D cameras used for the system are AG-3DA1 3-D camcorders and are available to purchase right now. The 3-D panoramic camera system Panasonic created also has small high-performance video recorders tethered to the cameras. It seems that this would be a more interesting system if all the images were pieced together in one continuous shot rather than being viewed on individual displays.
Panasonic thinks that this imaging system would be appropriate for producing images of artworks housed in museums around the world. Panasonic also notes that it is an Olympic sponsor and is considering using this system for future Olympic Games. Check out the video below to see the 3-D camera system.

LG’s Smart TV platform starts renting out Disney 3D movies, offers new buyers $50 worth
Posted in: Today's ChiliAlthough these have been accomplished by two different branch entities, there’s no doubt the folks over at Disney are in a deal-making mood as of late. Having recently announced a deal bringing new content to Cablevision subscribers, Disney has also partnered up with LG to bring an array of 3D films over to its Smart TV platform — so long as the units are 3D-ready and you are in the US, of course. This means movies from studios such as Disney Pixar, Walt Disney Pictures, Marvel and Touchstone Pictures will available to rent in three-dee directly from LG’s 3D World, including The Avengers, Toy Story, Alice in Wonderland and, later next year, Finding Nemo. Better yet, LG’s currently offering a deal which hands you $50 in credit (which expires December 31st) to spend on 3D rentals — naturally, however, you’ll have to shell out some cash on one of its qualifying TVs in order to take advantage of this promo. To learn more about that, check out the press release after the break.

LG electronics has announced that it has entered into an agreement with Walt Disney Studios that will bring 3-D Disney films to its 3-D TV platform. The Disney flicks will be available on LG’s 3-D World in the coming months. Some 3D Disney films are on the service now with more coming.
Two blockbuster 3-D films that will be coming to the LG Smart TV platform on November 13 include Marvel’s The Avengers and the animated movie Brave. LG says that the addition of Disney content to its smart TV platform helps to address the consumer desire for more 3-D programming. There are some films available from Disney in 3-D on LG’s platform right now.
The films available right now included the Toy Story trilogy and Alice in Wonderland among others. LG says its Smart TV program allows for a movie theater 3-D quality experience for the whole family. LG points out that most of its Cinema 3-D Smart TVs include six pairs of 3-D glasses allowing the whole family to watch popular Disney programs.
LG is trying to drum up support for its new 3-D offerings by offering new TV buyers a coupon worth $50 in 3-D content. LG says that by the spring of 2013 several other 3-D movies will be available, including Finding Nemo, Bolt, Gnomeo & Juliet, Tangled, and Tron: Legacy. Prices for renting 3-D films range between four dollars and eight dollars each.
