Samsung has retaliated against Apple once again — this time, in France, where the Korean manufacturer has filed a complaint alleging that Cupertino infringed upon a trio of its patents. Originally filed with a Paris district court in July and announced yesterday, the complaint claims that the UMTS technologies featured in the iPhone and 3G-enabled iPads violate three of Samsung’s patents. Unlike a previous case in Germany, which recently resulted in a nationwide injunction against the Galaxy Tab 10.1, this filing “focuses on three technology patents, and not on the design of the tablets,” as a Samsung spokesperson was quick to point out. Details on the patents in question remain blurry for the moment, but it’ll probably be a while before the case progresses anyway, with the first hearing scheduled for December.

Just in time for play-by-play tweets about the Rugby World Cup in New Zealand, Auckand has instituted a fully-integrated WiFi network across its Link public transit system. According to officials, buses and some trains will get the free internet treatment, giving passengers up to three 30 minute sessions a day between September 1 and October 31st. Powered by Tomizone and sponsored by Localist, the network promises 2 – 6Mbps downloads and is based on point-to-point links around town using fiber assets for backhaul. If that wasn’t enough connectivity, CallPlus and Slingshot are dishing out some gratis WiFi of their own with an additional thousand hotspots sprinkled throughout the city. Hopefully, the added infrastructure will mean WiFi access par excellence year round for maximum non-Rugby related tweetage. Check out the full PR after the break.

The UK has plenty of endearing olde worlde attributes, but its lack of fast mobile data access isn’t one of them. The country has yet to enter the LTE era and, according to a crowdsourced survey by the BBC, it’s still plagued by “not spots” where you can’t get 3G reception either. More than 40,000 Brits downloaded a tailor-made Android app that recorded their local street level access and their results proved that many city centers and rural areas are effectively no-go swamplands for smartphone users — although coverage was good over 70- to 80-percent of Her Majesty’s territory.
