Philips DS8400 iPhone speaker-dock packs Bluetooth, Lightning & a battery

Philips has revealed its latest iPhone speaker dock, the Philips DS8400, offering both Lightning and Bluetooth connectivity for the terminally indecisive. The new dock, which has an internal battery for standalone use, can dock with an iPhone or stream music from any Bluetooth A2DP-compliant phone, PMP, tablet, or other gadget.

Philips_DS8400

Inside the curved casing there are two 3-inch full-range drivers, with each getting its own bass pipe for emphasizing the low-end. Philips also claims that the shape of the speaker-dock – with no squared-off sides either front or back – reduces sound reflections and unwanted vibrations.

On the audio side, the DS8400 sucks a digital audio input from the iPhone, rather than analog, for what Philips says is better overall sound, and the dock works with the SoundStudio app for iOS which includes a graphic equalizer and “MySound” system. There, dragging a finger around an onscreen grid adjusts the sound according to whether listeners prefer it to be “powerful”, “warm”, “bright”, or “clear”.

The app also offers internet radio playback, though of course you could also find that through many iPhone (or Bluetooth streaming device) apps. On the back, there’s an aux-in connection for wired non-Apple devices.

Battery life is an estimated five hours from a full charge, and Philips includes a mains power dock onto which the DS8400 sits to rejuice. A remote is included.

Philips says the DS8400 iPhone speaker-dock will go on sale this month, priced at £250 ($377). No word on US launch plans at this stage.

Nokia Lumia 1020 camera grip leaks at all angles

It’s no secret that the Nokia EOS (or Nokia 1020 as it’ll be called later this week, more than likely), will be rolling out with some serious photography power. Here as we saw very, very briefly earlier this week, we’ve gotten another look at a key accessory for this machine – a camera grip that makes the machine much more like the big-handling machines its amalgamation of lenses and processing abilities suggests.

59df1e426f1a58b475bc62b2adc183ba

This case works – or would very much appear to work – with an extra bit of battery as well, adding on 1020mAh (likely an added 40% life-span or so) to the Nokia smartphone as well. Plugging in through the smartphone’s microUSB port at its bottom (if you’re holding the machine vertically, that is), this accessory also makes way for the device’s massive lens and flash cover.

You’ll find this machine delivered in white, but as it has been with the large cross-section of Nokia devices revealed over the past several years, you can expect a set of alternate colors as well. Wouldn’t want to be left out in the cold without options!

Up top is a physical shutter button that’ll depress to hit the Nokia smartphone’s own physical shutter button. On the side is a battery button that’ll light up 1-4 bulbs depending on how much power the machine has in it, and you’ll find a grippier bit up front for your left hand’s remaining tendrils. The bottom, then, also reveals a socket with screw rings for mounting this machine on a tripod.

Have a peek at the rest of the tips and leaks revealed in recent days and weeks on the Nokia 1020 and get ready for the full event on the 11th of July – that’s tomorrow!

Xbox One Headset now reportedly bundled as Microsoft U-turns again

Microsoft’s Xbox One will now include a headset as part of the standard bundle, it’s reported, with the company apparently having another change of heart and opting to include the accessory after gamers voiced their dissatisfaction. The Xbox One Chat Headset had initially been billed as a separate purchase, but according to information from the official Microsoft distributor for the console, ElectronicTheatre reports, will now be thrown in the box too.

xbox_one_chat_headset

News of the changed standard package came from distributor Gem, which apparently notified retailers today. The company’s online listing for the Xbox One has not yet been updated to include the adjustment.

This 180-degree U-turn on Microsoft’s part is the latest change of heart the company has had around the Xbox One. Last month, Microsoft threw out its 24-hour-check-in requirement, after gamers were vocal in their disapproval of the system.

Originally, Microsoft had intended to force Xbox One owners to connect their consoles to the internet at least once every 24hrs, so that games could be checked against an online DRM system. That would allow for Microsoft to track license sales to authorized retailers but, also, enable features like family play, which would have allowed up to ten people to try a single copy of a purchased game.

Microsoft itself is yet to comment on the reported change in bundle, and it’s unclear if the adjustment to the Xbox One package will also apply to the US and other countries where the console is sold, or just to the UK.

The Xbox One Chat Headset is a wired mono headset which connects to the Xbox One’s wireless controller. It has mute and volume controls, as well as supporting digital wideband for better quality audio.

SelfLoops brings ANT+ to all Android devices

If you’re a fitness nut and/or enjoy knowing bits and pieces of information about the environment around you using smart sensors, SelfLoops may very well have made an accessory you’re all about. This SelfLoops ANT+ accessory (as it’s so humbly titled) brings about connectivity to fitness and health sensors that use the ANT+ protocol – every single one of them. Then while you’re at it, this accessory charges your Android device up on-the-go.

asdfdsa

So you’ve got this brick-looking device made by SelfLoops. You plug it in to your Android smartphone, download a couple SelfLoops apps, and you’re on your way. What this accessory does is connect to any and all ANT+ devices you’ve got on hand – and there are a lot of them at this point, mind you, feeding any relevant information in to your smartphone.

*UPDATE: SelfLoops does indeed note that this device works with any application written using the official AND Alliance APIs at this time – so you’re free to go wild!

Once you’ve got the information in your phone, the SelfLoops suite of apps is able to make use of it all. At the moment, this sensor only works with the SelfLoops apps – in the future, it’s easy to imagine this accessory acting as halfway point between Android devices and a wide variety of accessories and apps.

Meanwhile this accessory accesses humidity, temperature, and barometric pressure all on its own.

This accessory works with all Android devices so long as they’re working with Android 2.3.4 (that’s all the way back to Gingerbread!) or higher. Inside you’ve got a rechargeable 2000mAh battery that’ll be the hookup for your Android phone, and the whole machine comes in at just 1.76 ounces.

Pebble Best Buy sales begin as smartwatch hits retail [UPDATE]

As rumored yesterday, Pebble smartwatches are indeed coming to Best Buy. The Kickstarter-funded smartwatch has not hit the online retail sector on Best Buy’s website for $149, which is a bit more than what you could’ve gotten one for if you backed the Kickstarter project, which were selling for $99 a piece at the time.

pebble_review_sg_26-580x394

However, it doesn’t seem the smartwatch is going on sale just yet. Best Buy lists the Pebble on their website, but with a “coming soon” next to it. Furthermore, calling Best Buy to confirm in-store availability was also a mystery. The Pebble will be available in stores, but just as the website says, they’re not selling them on the shelves just yet.

We also weren’t told an exact release date for the Pebble either, so it merely just seems that Best Buy has announced that they’ll be offering the Pebble smartwatch, but it’s not quite known when exactly we’ll get to buy one from the retailer. So far, they’re showing only red as a color option, but hopefully we’ll be treated with more colors as soon as it’s officially on shelves.

Screen Shot 2013-07-02 at 11.01.04 AM

The Pebble smartwatch can be credited with the recent boom in the popularity of the accessory. It raised over $10 million on Kickstarter, becoming one of the most successful Kickstarter projects of all time. Smartwatches have been around for a few years now, but bigger companies have been rumored to be joining in on the fun with their own smartwatch creations.

UPDATE: According to 9to5Mac, they’ve received confirmation that Pebble will be available in Best Buy stores starting on July 7, with online availability starting later today.

Kate Moss to design mobile accessory range: ‘My phone’s as much a part of my look as my bag or shoes’

Kate Moss launches mobile accessory range, says her phone is 'as much a part of my look as my bag or shoes'

British model, high-street fashion dabbler and, er, Glastonbury attendee Kate Moss is working on an exclusive collection of phone accessories for UK retailer Carphone Warehouse. Quoted in a press release that doesn’t describe or feature any products from the range, she says she’ll be treating the partnership “like any other fashion collaboration,” and was apparently heavily involved in the design process. Although there’s no word on what the accessories will be, we’d assume an iPhone case of some sort is a given. Carphone Warehouse promises a full range of products when the line launches later this summer, and we’re looking forward to comparing the fruits of the partnership against the high-end phone peripherals that are already being peddling to well-heeled UK phone owners.
