Crapgadget: ‘no rhyme or reason’ edition

Amazingly, these waves of Crapgadgets tend to showcase some sort of mini-trend. Oftentimes it’s a certain fondness for USB overkill, while other times it just feels like gaudy is the new black. This go ’round, however, we’re looking at a veritable cornucopia of lameness. Eager to drop a Jackson to enjoy one of the most non-ergonomic wooden mice to ever see the light of day? Now you can. There’s also the common issue of not being able to see text in a book while in pure darkness, but rather than just flipping a light switch or changing time zones to locate the sun, there’s a wearable necklace to do the trick. Believe it or not, the list just keeps on getting better, with a machine gun-styled USB drive, heart-shaped telephone and a USB scent flower rounding things out. Dive into dumpster below if you dare, and drop your vote for the worst of the worst in the poll below.

HTC HD2 extended battery with kickstand up for pre-order in the UK

British electronics e-tailer Clove has started listing a new £53 ($86) HD2 accessory that should be of interest to everyone who owns or plans on owning the device. We always thought that generous 4.3-inch screen could do with some backside support, and indeed the new kickstand-equipped extended battery will provide just that. You’ll also get a nice energy bump, as the new accessory is set to double the 1,230mAh capacity of the default juice pack. Deliveries are expected by Clove in February, meaning it shouldn’t be too long before this official appendage makes its global debut — let’s just hope other nations don’t have to suffer as much wallet damage as the UK.

The Space Bar sleekly covers up your grimy keyboard, adds a few USB ports to boot

Let’s face it — there’s at least an 89.4 percent chance that you’d be utterly embarrassed to let your mother, SO or inner neat-freak inspect your keyboard. Years of wear and tear have cleared the way for minuscule portions of delicacies, follicles and all manners of foreign objects to make their home just beneath the vowels you smash on a daily basis, and considering that cleaning said keyboard or buying a new one is far too difficult, the Quirky community has a better solution. The Space Bar ($42 in a 3-pack) is an aluminum keyboard cover that can slip right over ‘boards that measure 18-inches wide and 1.5-inches deep; aside from covering things up, it also provides six easily accessible USB 2.0 ports. Too bad there’s no germ-nixing UV light on the underside, but there’s always hope for v2.0.

Update: The pricing has since been updated — it’s $42 for each.

Pink and blue Wii Remotes ready for Valentine’s Day pre-order

Nintendo may be a lot of things, but stupid it ain’t. Cashing in on yet another gift-giving holiday, the console sales leader is bringing Americans a pair of freshly paint-licked Wii Remotes that should appeal to the his-and-hers demographic that seems to grow in number at this time of year. As you can see above, grabbing one will set you back $54.99, which is about the same price as the regular MotionPlus bundle. So, even if you weren’t thinking about wooing your loved one with yet another Wii peripheral, at least the US now gets a 200 percent improvement in MotionPlus color choices. How is that not progress?

[Thanks, Brandon]

Vuzix Becomes Adaptable with Accessory Line

VuzixAccessories.jpg

In an effort to make the company’s Wrap series of video eyewear more flexible to different use conditions, Vuzix has announced a line of six accessories.

  • Wrap VGA Adapter: Use this to connect any Wrap model to a computer’s VGA port.
  • Wrap Power Sled: This makes using Wrap glasses easier with an iPod Touch or iPhone. Dock the Wrap Sled to either for convenient powering and use, since an application moves the Wrap’s controls to the iPod Touch or iPhone’s screen.
  • Wrap 6 DoF Tracker: The Degree-of-Freedom Tracker tells the computer or mobile phone where you’re looking or moving for immersive, virtual reality applications.
  • Wrap Stereo Camera: Add twin cameras to your Wrap eyewear, then record your world in 3D.
  • Wrap CV Recharge Pack: Recharge through a USB connection or the included AC adapter.
  • Wrap Style Lens (shown): Don’t settle for the standard look. These replacement lenses come in three colors and a mirror finish.

The VGA Adapter ($49.99) is currently available. The others are due out in the second quarter of this year.

Feel Your Music with the Ear Vibe

TechnocelEarVibe.jpg

Don’t just hear your music, feel your music. That’s the message from Technocel, which just announced the Ear Vibe ear buds. This is the first stereo headset that vibrates to the beat of the music. When songs hit low-frequency bass, these vibrate, adding a whole new dimension to your songs. It seems a little scary, right? I’d like to try them out, but I’d want to have some aspirin nearby, just in case.

More than headphones, the Ear Vibe also includes a microphone for making hands-free calls. It’s compatible with most mobile phones that play music, and works with all MP3 players including the iPod. Look for the Ear Vibe January 15 for a reasonable $29.99.

Logitech Puts Comfort in Your Lap with Lapdesk

LogitechLapdeskN700.jpgUsing your laptop computer on the couch doesn’t have to mean giving up the extras you get when working at a desk, not when you’ve got the Logitech Speaker Lapdesk N700. Launched at CES, this is one enhanced laptop pad.

For starters, it includes integrated stereo speakers on either side, so that your music and movies sound great. There’s no software to install: Just connect it to a USB port. The Lapdesk uses little power, so you won’t notice much of a hit on your battery.

The Lapdesk also gets high marks for comfort. The padded base is covered in a soft, air-mesh fabric and includes a 10-degree angled riser, so you can hold your laptop at the best viewing angle. It lets you stay cool with a quiet, efficient fan, so that your computer never makes your legs too warm. The Lapdesk is available now for pre-order for $79.99 and should ship in the U.S. in February.

PosiMotion Announces Helix Gaming Grip for the iPhone

HelixGrip - Banner

If you do a lot of gaming on your iPhone or iPod Touch, you know it can be a little tricky to hold your iPhone or iPod Touch just right so you don’t wind up accidentally touching the screen while you’re steering a car or navigating an asteroid field.
The iPhone isn’t designed to be a steering wheel or flight control stick, so PosiMotion developed the Helix Gaming Grip for your iPhone or iPod Touch. The grip has two solid handles on either side and is designed to make it easier to twist and turn your iPhone while gaming without worrying that it’s going to slip out of your hand.

PosiMotion announces Helix gaming grip for iPhone / iPod touch

Still not satisfied with any of the with iPhone and iPod touch steering wheel or game controller accessories available these days? Then perhaps PosiMotion’s recently announced Helix gaming grip will be more to your liking — it does promise to be ideal for “virtually any game,” after all. To that end, the Helix is able to accommodate your iPhone or iPod touch in either portrait or landscape mode, and it boasts a “grip-enhancing” soft-touch coating to keep it from slipping from your hands during particularly intense gaming sessions. Still no firm word on a release date just yet, but PosiMotion will gladly take your $20 now and deliver one to you sometime in the Spring.

Brando’s USB 3.0-to-SATA adapter gives any old HDD those SuperSpeed powers

Oh, Brando — how we do love thee. Be it random accessories we don’t need at all or legitimate peripherals that make our lives all that much easier, you’re always there — steadfastly waiting for us to fall in love over and over again. Mushiness aside, the outfit’s new USB 3.0-to-SATA adapter is indeed one of those remarkably useful devices, enabling any old SATA hard drive to be accessed externally at USB 3.0 speeds. Essentially, this is the pocket-friendly version of Sharkoon’s latest SATA QuickPort, but rather than forcing you to carry around a dock, this simple dongle travels easy and plugs directly into the port-laden side of your spare HDD. Granted, you’ll need a USB 3.0-enabled PC or expansion card in order to take advantage of the additional speed, but for $48, this looks to be an excellent excuse to get that dusty, unused drive of yours back into service.
