Acer’s easyStore H340 says hello Atom, hello Windows Home Server

Acer's easyStore H340 says hello Atom, hello Windows Home Server

Discounting CyberPower’s misnomer, we haven’t seen a proper Windows Home Server to compete with HP’s MediaSmart in quite some time. Thankfully Acer is up to the challenge, at least in Japan, announcing its new easyStore H340 series, initially available in two flavors: S1 for those who need just 1TB of storage and the S2 for those who want three times that. (Yes, S3 seems like a more appropriate name to us, too.) Other than the number of drives internally (one for the S1, three for the S2) the machines are the same, sporting a 1.6GHz Atom 230, 1GB of memory, and four internal drive bays. Naturally both offer all the WHS tricks, like remote backup of networked computers and plenty of media streaming, tricks they’ll start turning in Japan on March 6th at the cost of about $600 for the S1 and $900 for the S2.

New slimline Acer Aspire One slimline pics, alleged specs leak

After seeing the tiniest bit of evidence this morning of a slimmer Acer Aspire One, an anonymous reader has bragged to netbooknews.de that he’s gotten some hands-on time with the laptop, and brought along some purported pics of it as evidence. Dimension-wise, we’re looking at 0.95 inches thick, 10 inches wide, 7.28 inches deep. As for specs, it’s pretty much what you’d expect from a netbook: 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 with 945GME graphics, 1024 x 600 resolution, 1GB RAM, 802.11 a/b/g, a 3-cell battery that’s said to last a discouraging 3 hours or less, and “apparently” integrated UMTS — no word on whether or not this thing’s packing SSD. Overall, the mysterious individual with an enigmatic hat gave it positive impressions, with special props given to the keyboard and touchpad. Hit up the read link for more pics, and Acer? Give us some official glamor shots soon, please.

Acer’s Aspire One trims the fat, upcoming slimmer model pictured

Acer's Aspire One trims the fat, upcoming slimmer model pictured

At just over an inch thick it’s hard to think of a little laptop like Acer’s Aspire One as being chubby — but that doesn’t stop us from looking longingly at other, skinnier options in the pipeline. Apparently aware of our wandering eye, Acer is set to release a thinner model that, according to speculation, will buck the netbook storage trend by being SSD-only. Beyond that little is known about this streamlined portable, but you can be sure we’ll be keeping an eye out for more info — between fleeting glances at other hot arrivals, of course.

[Thanks, Chris]

MWC day two: a new hope

If day one of MWC was dominated by Windows Mobile, day two went to Android — although most of the announcements were vague and Toshiba’s Snapdragon-based TG01 did much to impress. Obviously the big announcement was the HTC Magic (née the G2), which’ll be coming to Vodafone UK in April, but several other manufacturers committed to building Googlephones as well. What else did we learn?

Acer’s four other phones in the flesh, not powered on

Acer made a lot of noise about launching “eight” handsets yesterday, but we only got hard details on the four Tempos — which was probably the wrong way to go, because the prototypes of the F1, white C1, L1, and the E1 due to launch later this year are way hotter. Too bad Acer won’t turn ’em on or tell us anything about them — we can see the F1 has a five megapixel camera, but the lack of a Windows Mobile 6.5-required hardware Start button on any of these doesn’t bode well. Check ’em all out in the gallery.

Acer F900, M900, X960, and DX900 hands-on with video

Acer’s new Tempo lineup of middling Windows Mobile 6.1 sets isn’t going to steal the show from the TG01, the OmniaHD, or the Magic, but it’s not like they’re total failures — they’re just way behind the curve. Engadget Spanish did the honors, and it looks like Acer would have been better off spending the time getting these ready to ship with 6.5 instead of the amusingly quaint Microsoft Bob-like Acer Shell it’s come up with to skin 6.1 — all it’s missing is the dog. Add in a general sense of lagginess and a stubborn resistive touchscreen, and we’d say this round is better off skipped. So much for those budding Acer fanboys. More galleries and a video after the break.

Acer working on two Android phones to launch this year

Alright, this one’s pure tradeshow silliness — when Engadget Spanish pressed the Acer rep at MWC about rumored plans to launch an Android handset, dude pulled out a notebook and whipped up a quick product roadmap, including the two mysterious “Android secret models” shown here. That’s all we know for now, but anything’s got to be better than the sad Tempos Acer launched yesterday — and hey, we also got the names of the four announced-but-not-revealed sets we’re due to see sometime later this year. One more pic of Acer’s secret diary after the break.

Acer unveils Tempo smartphone series, forgets Windows Mobile 6.5

Not long after we spotted four new Acer phones in Barcelona has the company officially unveiled the Tempo X960, F900, M900, and DX900 smartphones, albeit with a few typo-laden spec sheets. Interestingly, all of them are running Windows Mobile 6.1, even though Stevey Ballms pulled the wraps off WinMo 6.5 earlier today — and making matters worse, we’re not seeing that required hardware Start button on the DX900 or X960, which means an upgrade probably isn’t in the cards. Curious move, we’d say — and we’re also in the dark on what happened to that goofy dual-sided set we saw leaked earlier. We’ll be on the lookout for answers, check all the detailed specs after the break.

Four previously unknown Acer phones spied in Barcelona

Well, these are not the Acer phones we saw leaked a few days ago — in fact, there are four new dudes here, all previously unseen. We know little about them, except that they are apparently on hand somewhere at MWC, and we hear that it’s possible they’re going to be unveiled today, so we’ll keep our eyes peeled for them. In the meantime, try to contain yourself and hit the read link for photos of the other two.

AT&T Stores to Stock Netbooks?

According to a recent online survey conducted by a market research firm, AT&T is at least considering carrying netbooks in their stores.

Survey materials tease not only a wide variety of netbook models at AT&T, but 30-minute in-store consultation for those who may need a tutorial to get up and running. While AT&T is already in the netbook-subsidy business, the company has relied upon third parties like RadioShack to sell the hardware and service. Now it looks like AT&T is gearing up to geek out on their own accord. [Thanks tipster!]
