NeuroFocus makes first wireless EEG sensor headset, don’t call it a thinking cap

It’s well known that advertisers track our web-surfing habits to tailor the ads we see, but they’d prefer to know exactly what’s going on inside of that brain of yours. NeuroFocus’ aptly named Mynd, a full-brain wireless EEG sensor headset, serves as a stylish and easy way to record your thoughts whilst gazing at logos and lusting after products. In addition to neuromarketing applications, the European Tools for Brain-Computer Interaction consortium (TOBI) see it as a tool to help develop new technology for those with neurological disabilities. Sporting looks straight off the Game Grid, the Mynd is made of medical-grade EEG sensors to capture brain activity 2,000 times per second and a Bluetooth radio to shoot your thoughts to the smartphone, tablet, or PC of your choice. The wireless bit represents a huge upgrade over traditional EEG caps because it makes the headset’s mind-reading powers available in shopping malls and living rooms instead of just hospitals. Verizon renews HTC Trophy offer for Microsoft employees

Early 2011” is rapidly passing us by — as, for that matter, is March — but we still wouldn’t rule out a Verizon Wireless launch of the HTC Trophy smartphone. You see, the carrier’s seemingly still advertising the Windows Phone 7 device inside Microsoft itself, in a likely attempt to gather preorders before the device hits shelves. We can’t say for sure when the phone will actually arrive, of course, but if we were the gambling type, we’d toss some horseshoes in the general direction of April Fools’ and pray they find a mark.

Microsoft and ASUS show off all the stylish stylus action you can have on an Eee Slate (video)

It’s the year 2011, but it might as well be 2001. The company that Bill built is still going strong in the pursuit of its founding father’s dream: a pen-based tablet computer. The latest, and perhaps best, exhibitor of this ideal is ASUS’ Eee Slate, a 12.1-inch, Core i5-equipped Windows 7 tablet that comes with a Wacom digitizer and a dedicated silo in its side for accommodating that snow-white stylus. A Bluetooth keyboard also comes in the box, leading Microsoft to describe it as a device that’s simultaneously “very PC” and “not very PC.” To understand what the Redmond brainboxes mean by this apparent case of doublethink, make your way past the break and soak up all the video action.

Lynx augmented reality stunt drops scantly clad angels on terrestrial travelers (video)

It isn’t exactly a spring chicken, nor is it particularly new to the advertising game — Best Buy utilized the stuff back in 2009 to push electronics — but a new ad campaign from manly body spray purveyor Lynx (Axe in the US) is making augmented reality nearly unavoidable. Created by BBH, a global ad agency, the video below shows travelers at London’s Victoria train station staring up at a giant screen to find themselves greeted by a skimpily attired fallen angel. The stunt, launched on March 6, drew a lot of attention from passersby, and in more than one instance elicited some pretty, well, bold behavior. Up until now, augmented reality has mostly been a play thing of the geek set — even previous advertisements enlisting such tactics required a decent amount of work from the audience — but if these fallen angels are any sign, we could all be traversing a more unreal world very soon.

Nintendo posts first 3DS advert for the US, whets growing appetites (video)

For the last few remaining souls in North America not aware that the Nintendo 3DS is coming later this month, the Japanese company has rolled out its first US commercial. Shockingly enough, it doesn’t display anything not already announced, but now would be kind of late to be springing surprises on us anyhow, right? It’s a portable console with glasses-free 3D — that works reasonably well — and it’s made by Nintendo, which means half the people on your street will probably own one by this time next month. Jump past the break to see the American commercial and its earlier-released UK sibling — you’ll find a fun juxtaposition of presentation styles when comparing the two.

Scent sampling poster for kate spade twirl perfume

Kate spade new york is currently running an aroma sampling campaign in two places in Tokyo, giving consumers a chance to take home a sample of its new fragrance product “twirl” as it goes on sale across Japan.

Not too dissimilar to the manga dispensing ads I recently stumbled upon, kate spade is promoting the twirl perfume with posters in Omotesando and Shinjuku subway stations that feature peel-off scented cards. Not only can you experience the product’s smell but there are QR codes on the back of the cards so that you can enter a competition to win twirl goodies, such as a necklace or bag designed in the same way as the perfume.

Not quite as generous as Adidas — who are currently loaning out running shoes — but then, considering the quantitive nature of the product, the approach is very similar but more practical for the industry.

The aroma sampling posters are in the two stations from March 7th to March 13th, but the campaign is over when they’ve all been claimed. Certainly when I was there they were going quickly, even being taken by people who were obviously not the target consumer: these kinds of campaigns have a strong curiosity kick that engages with passers-by, no matter whether you buy perfume regularly or not.

Skype to start serving ads in US, Germany and UK ahead of upcoming IPO

It’s a common problem, not having as much cash as you want to, and Skype‘s solving it with a common web solution: advertising. It may come as a surprise to hear that the eminently popular voice and chat service doesn’t peddle stuff to its users already, but it’s now formalizing a plan to introduce a carefully controlled measure of paid-for display ads on the Home tab of its Windows desktop client. You heard that right, there’s no mention of Mac or mobile services here, and it’s further limited to the nations of Germany, the UK, and USA. Anonymous data may be collected as part of the new scheme to target ads to specific audiences (you can, however, opt out), while Skype promises that user experience remains paramount to its future goals, though clearly that looming Initial Public Offering isn’t too far from its thoughts right now either.

Shocker! UK regulator finds average broadband speeds are ‘less than half’ those advertised

You don’t have to go to the lengths of compiling a statistical project to know that advertised and actual broadband speeds are two pretty disparate entities, but it does help. Ofcom, the UK communications regulator, recently took a thorough look at 11 broadband packages, which collectively account for over 90 percent of all British broadband subscriptions, and found that actual download throughput was less than half (only 45 percent) of the advertised “up to” speed. The worst offenders were resellers of BT’s ADSL lines, with Orange dipping below 3Mbit on its 8Mbit lines and TalkTalk occasionally offering only 7.5Mbit to users paying for a 24Mbit connection, while Virgin’s cable connectivity won out by sticking most loyally to its listed rating. What Ofcom proposes for the future is that all these service providers start offering Typical Speed Ranges that more accurately reflect the bandwidth a potential subscriber would be buying into — a proposal that might actually have some teeth as the British Advertising Standards Authority is currently in the midst of a review specifically concerned with broadband advertising practices. Transparency in the way we’re sold broadband? That’d make a welcome change!

Motorola Xoom rooted in two hours flat, sinister transforming exoskeleton jetpack returns in Verizon ad

What’s the first thing you’re going to do with your Motorola Xoom? If you’re Koush, the answer’s clear — install your very own ClockworkMod recovery image and ROM Manager, and grant the latter superuser permissions. That’s right, on the very day of release, the Motorola Xoom’s all but ready for custom builds of Android and all the joy they bring.

Meanwhile, Verizon’s decided to bring us the latter half of the abruptly cut Xoom TV ad, which actually differs significantly depending on whether or not Spanish is your primary language. Either way, it’s a fairly sordid affair, with no Iron Man feats of stratospheric skill to be found, merely a quick demonstration of gaming with the accelerometer and a few quick swipes through Honeycomb. You’ll still watch it if we tell you it’s after the break though, won’t you?
