Sprint: Samsung Moment and HTC Hero Android 2.1 updates now coming ‘in Q2’
Posted in: Android, download, firmware, Google, GoogleAndroid, hero, HTC, operating system, OperatingSystem, os, ota, samsung, smartphone, Sprint, Today's Chili, updateOuch. Just a few days ago, it seems like a certainty that Sprint would be pushing out Android 2.1 updates to the aging Samsung Moment and HTC Hero, but now a company admin has stepped in to assure us that things aren’t nearly that close to go. The full text is pasted in after the break, but the long and short of it is this: the long-awaited 2.1 update is now on track “to be available in Q2.” The carrier did confess to wanting this out sooner rather than later, but hey, at least your patience is really, really appreciated.
[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

LG Ally gets its own website, details finally start to flow
Posted in: Android, LG, smartphone, teaser, Today's ChiliLG’s Ally recently got its stamp of approval from LG, but outside of a terse acknowledgment that the phone was real (and had a thing for iron-clad superheroes), little else was divulged. Today, we’ve stumbled upon the phone’s dedicated product page over at the company’s website, which not only plugs Iron Man 2 to the nth degree, but also informs us that it’ll ship with a 3.2-inch touchscreen, Android 2.1, slide-out QWERTY keyboard, a backside camera and a microSD card slot. There’s also a link over there to jump into the LG Ally community, so feel free to do just that if this trickling of information is driving you up the wall.

Sony Ericsson X10 family to get Android 2.1 in ‘Q4 2010’
Posted in: Android, AndroidOs, breaking news, BreakingNews, firmware, Software, Sony Ericsson, SonyEricsson, Today's Chili, update, upgrade, xperiaThe Xperia X10, one of the big mindshare-grabbing devices of the smartphone world, made us wait a cool six months between its November announcement and wide retail availability in April. One of the secret hopes while all that waiting was going on was that perhaps SE would surprise us and upgrade the dusty old Android 1.6 base installation to a fresh and creamy Eclair (2.1) or even a frosty Froyo (2.2) treat shortly after launch. Time to lay those dreams to rest, dear friends, as Sony Ericsson has come with an official schedule for upgrading the firmware on the Xperia X10 and its X10 mini and X10 mini pro siblings, which places the Android 2.1 delivery in the fourth quarter of 2010 — and knowing the company that probably means closer to Christmas than Halloween. All we can say is you’d better really like that UX platform a great deal, because it’ll be the only thing you’ll be seeing for quite a while on Sony Ericsson’s Googlephones.

Sprint’s HTC Hero update to Android 2.1 finally coming on May 7?
Posted in: Android, Google, hero, HTC, rumor, Sprint, Today's Chili, update, upgradeThis is turning into a serious boy-who-cried-wolf kind of situation, but evidence is growing today that HTC and Sprint are finally — yes, finally — ready to drop a hot batch of Sense-laden Android 2.1 on eager Hero owners. A screen shot of a Best Buy employee news page reads that the update was “delayed until this week” and will be “in all stores” by this Friday, May 7; what that means isn’t exactly clear, but it could suggest that all Heros being sold in Best Buy Mobile locations will have the update applied by then. As for current customers, Best Buy is sending out instructions on how staff can help owners upgrade if they happen to wander into the store, but otherwise, it should be available from HTC’s site (yeah, no over-the-air action here). Stay tuned, folks.
[Thanks, John]

T-Mobile myTouch 3G Slide official: Android 2.1, QWERTY, coming in June (we go hands-on)
Posted in: Android, breaking news, BreakingNews, hands-on, HTC, qwerty, sense, slider, t-mobile, Today's ChiliHey, CLIQ, better check that rear-view mirror, because you’ve got an interesting competitor coming right up on your tail. T-Mobile is launching another midrange Android QWERTY slider — some might argue the G1’s true successor — christened the myTouch 3G Slide (not quite the “myTouch Slide” we’ve been hearing for a few months) with a 3.4-inch HVGA display, 5 megapixel camera, and a pretty heavily-customized skin based on Android 2.1. How custom are we talking, exactly? Well, it’s not quite like anything we’ve seen on a production Android device before, featuring a host of custom apps including the “Faves Gallery,” a social aggregator for your most dearly beloved contacts; “myModes,” a profile manager that can change the phone’s themes and settings based on time or location; the Swype keyboard in place of Google’s option; and the so-called “Genius Button,” which seeks to extend Android’s already decent voice command and text-to-speech systems by allowing you to do just about anything on the phone using your voice, hear messages read back to you, and so on. In the myTouch 3G tradition, the Slide will come in a selection of colors when it launches in June — black, white, or red — for a to-be-announced price. Check out T-Mobile’s full press release along with our impressions of the device after the break

Aigo’s surprisingly sexy 7-inch N700 tablet packs Android 2.1 and Tegra 2
Posted in: Android, arm, chinese, GoogleAndroid, multitouch, NVIDIA, slate, tablet, tablet pc, TabletPc, tegra, tegra 2, Tegra2, Today's ChiliGo ‘head Aigo! Get down with your bad self. Quite frankly, we never anticipated Aigo / Patriot to come through with a me-too tablet that actually made us take a second glance, but darn if this one isn’t quite the looker. And that’s before you’ve even had a moment to digest the specifications sheet. According to new details surfacing in China, this 7-inch machine will hum along on a 1GHz ARM Cortex A9 processor and feature NVIDIA’s Tegra 2 graphics chipset. There’s also 512MB of DDR2 memory, an 800 x 480 pixel multitouch display, 4/16/32GB of inbuilt storage, a USB socket, microSD slot, HDMI output, inbuilt WiFi, optional 3G WWAN, audio in / out and a 3,120mAh battery. Android 2.1 will be the OS of choice, but crucial details surrounding price and availability are sorely missing. Call us crazy, but we’ll actually be keeping an eye out for specifics on both.
Update: Well, what do you know? Seems as if this here device may in fact be a Compal NAZ-10 in disguise, and if this YouTube video is to be believed, it’ll boast 16 hours of HD video playback on a single charge and a $300 price tag. Can you say “tempting?” Thanks, Alain!

Cyanogen 5.0.7 experimentally brings Eclair to G1, myTouch 3G — caveats apply
Posted in: Android, GoogleAndroid, hack, hacked, Hacks, HTC, mod, mods, Today's ChiliAfter a brief delay, looks like CyanogenMod 5 is now out for the HTC Dream, Magic and Sapphire, also known as the T-Mobile G1 and myTouch 3G. The release is labeled as experimental, so take care not to flash it onto your work phone, and G1 owners should back up their data as they’ll need to install a little something called the DangerSPL (which has phone bricking potential) and perform a full wipe. If you’re the kind of individual who doesn’t shy away from software explicitly labeled “danger,” get cracking on that rooted Eclair at the source link.
Update: Can’t get through? That’s because the sheer willpower of Android early adopters is crushing websites hosting the CM5 ROM like so many stale pretzels. Cyanogen is retweeting alternative options if you simply can’t wait for things to quiet down.
