Did iOS 4.1 introduce in-car USB playback problems for you?

As with almost any software update, Apple has seemingly introduced a few new issues while ironing out a couple of others. Automotive forums around the web are ablaze with talk that iOS 4.1 has introduced any number of playback problems, with the bulk of complainers citing scratching, crackling or random disconnects when piping audio from their device to their vehicle via the dock connector. We’ve tested two iOS 4.1-equipped iPhone 4 handsets in two separate vehicles here at Engadget HQ, and we saw no quirks whatsoever, but we’ve no doubt that the issue is real to some extent. Prior firmwares have caused permanent incompatibilities between our iPods and vehicles before, and we’re about at our wit’s end. We know it’s impossible for the software engineers at Cupertino to test new builds on every car adapter out there, but we’re starting to wonder if they bother to plug ’em into any vehicles at all. Tell us below if you’ve pulled any hairs out in recent days, won’t you?

Apple Rebuts Steve Jobs Ninja Star Story

ninjastars.jpg

Boo Apple PR. I understand that it’s your job to paint your company in the best possible light, but come on, Steve Jobs carrying ninja stars onto a plane? That’s downright legendary. I already thought he was a pretty cool dude, but this really put him over the top (though, admittedly, were he a real ninja, security wouldn’t have been that big an issue).

Apple responded to today’s report that Jobs had his ninja stars confiscated in a Japanese airport by issuing the following statement,

Steve did visit Japan this summer for a vacation in Kyoto, but the incidents described at the airport are pure fiction. Steve had a great time and hopes to visit Japan again soon

The second sentence is, of course, a direct response to the capper of the story in which Jobs announced that he refused to ever go to Japan again, after the whole kerfuffle. I mean, come on, a dude’s gotta have some throwing stars, just in case. Have you seen the size of Ballmer?

iPods Stream Music to the Tango TRX Speakers

IPU-TRXD_hero_alternate-540x251.jpg
When you think about it, iPod docks don’t make sense. Why do you have
to dock Apple’s mp3 player into a speaker dock when recent models come
with Bluetooth support? With XtremeMac’s Tango TRX, you can use
Bluetooth 2.1 and beam your music from your mp3 player to the speakers
wirelessly.

If your iPod doesn’t support Bluetooth, or you keep it disabled, you
can still dock your iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPod into the front of Tango
TRX. The Tango TRX supports other portable music players, by means of a
line-in jack.

The speakers consist of two midrange drivers, two dome tweeters and a downward firing subwoofer.

The Tango TRX D, an Apple exclusive model, adds a separate charging dock for your iPod/iPhone/iPad.

There is also a remote control app which allows you to tweak the audio
as well as adjust the various EQ settings. The app is available for
free on the App Store.

The basic model is priced at $179.99 and is available now.

Preview: iTunes Spiral-Theme Interface

applespiraliTunes.jpg

Have you ever wanted to spin into a black hole of music oblivion? We all have. And it looks like that dream may finally become a reality. The Apple obsessives at Patently Apple have excavated some hidden treasure from Steve Jobs’ private wing at the patent office: a new spiral-theme interface for iTunes.

Patently is concluding that this new spiral interface will be a replacement for the standard Excel-like content list. But it’s more likely a replacement (or option) for the traditional “Cover View” that presents your content as a parade of cover art marching through the abyss. I can’t imagine Apple ever completely replacing the utilitarian “List View”–we don’t all need so much jazzamatazz in our interfaces.

This spiral UI hints at some interesting discovery aspects. It seems you can “spiral in” on particular artists or genres and even music of specific geographic locations. Crazy!

The patent makes note that this will be for iPods and iPhones, but it will likely be available, in some form, for the whole iFamilia. Look for it in a future iTunes update.

Woogie Is a Huggable, Kid-friendly iPhone Case

Woogie.jpg

Gadget-maker Griffin has partnered with educational app-maker ScrollMotion to create the Woogie, a unique iPhone case and educational experience. Part stuffed animal and part protective case, the Woogie holds an iPhone or iPod Touch and becomes a huggable companion. It includes two built-in speakers (powered by included AAA batteries) and plays Iceberg Kids e-books, music, videos, and more, which are created by ScrollMotion.

Buyers can use it with the free Iceberg Kids Sesame Street e-book sampler app, featuring “Elmo’s Birthday,” “Big Bird’s Nest,” and “The Fix-It Shop.” The app reads the stories out loud and allows parents and kids to record their own voices. Parents can then pony up for over 150 additional titles, all Woogie-ready and available from the iTunes Store.

ElementCase Unveils the ION and Formula 3 iPhone Cases

ElementCase - Formula 3 - ION 3There’s no shortage of iPhone cases on the market, but not all of them bring the same sense of style to the table as ElementCase‘s unique designs. The company recently announced the ION 3, a durable case with soft silicon rubber bumpers and corners on the sides and a smooth carbon fiber backplate designed to keep the phone safe and protected during regular use. The case is removable and has openings cut out of the top, back, and sides for the camera, headphone port and power button, dock connector, and volume control buttons. iPhone 3G and 3Gs versions of the ION 3 are available now, and iPhone 4 versions will be available next month, with all three models starting at $59.95.

ElementCase also unveiled the Formula 3, a three-part case with a carbon fiber backplate that connects to and is sandwiched between two end-pieces made of durable black polycarbonate. The two end-pieces attach to the central piece and create a full wrap-around case that will stay in place during use. The Formula 3 also has ports cut out for accessibility, and the corners of the case are flared so your iPhone can rest on a surface without being in full contact with its face or back. The Formula 3 is currently only available for the iPhone 3G and 3Gs, starting at $59.95 retail.

Rumor: iPhone 3Gs (Not 4) Coming to T-Mobile This Year

iPhone 3G

File this under: we’ll believe it when we see it. It’s a crowded file these days, filled most with iPhone carrier rumors. They tend to surface in the lead up to Apple events, but really, they can happen when you least expect them.

The rumors usually involve Verizon–a logical choice, really, given the size of the network and the loyalty it tends to provoke. There are boatloads of Verizon customers ready to jump on the iPhone, the moment it comes to their network.

This time out, however, the rumor involves T-Mobile. And, unlike those out-of-nowhere rumors we hear all the time, it comes from a pretty reliable source–Chris Anderson, the editor-in-chief of Wired.

Anderson earlier this week tweeted,

A T-Mobile manager casually mentioned to me that they’re going to get the iPhone 3GS (but not 4, oddly) later this year. Common knowledge?

The comment is interesting on a number of levels. First there’s the whole T-Mobile/Verizon thing. Second is the “casual” part, as thought the wireless employee was saying something that everyone knew, rather than sharing a secret or just letting something slip.

Also fascinating is the idea that the network would only get the 3Gs, rather than the brand new iPhone 4. Perhaps there’s something in the fine print of AT&T’s deal that bars a competitor from selling the latest version of the handset.

Of course, this is all in the realm of pure speculation, and if Apple has its way, we won’t hear anything solid about the deal until the company is good and ready.

Rechargeable iPhone 4 Case Now Shipping

Milano.jpg

SaFPWR (pronounced “safe power) has announced the availability of its new line of iPhone 4 battery cases. The Milano line comes with a rechargeable 2200mAh smart battery integrated into the case. Getting one will set you back $99.95. The battery doubles the power of the iPhone 4 automatically, so no on/off switch is needed. When an iPhone is inserted into the case, it automatically connects with the second battery with the SaFPWR Advanced Energy Management Technology system.

Circuitry in the case prevents short-circuiting, overcharging, over discharging, energy flow-back, and malfunction. The cases come in red and black, with a scaly surface described as a “lizard look.” It takes 3½ hours to get a full charge and weighs just 3.2 ounces.

XTremeMac Unveils Two New iPhone Docks

XtremeMac - 3 in 1 MicrodockiPhone and iPod docks are plentiful these days, but XTremeMac‘s new Luna SST dock and the new 3-in-1 Microdock stand out from the pack, mostly because they look sharp and offer features not found in other devices. For example, the Luna SST alarm clock and dock features a detachable speaker for full surround sound, and has two separate alarms that you can program independently so multiple users can wake at different times, or you can have one alarm for weekday mornings and another for the weekend.  The Luna SST is available now for $129.99 list.

The 3-in-1 Microdock is a slim, portable iPhone and iPod dock that’s travel-friendly, weighs just under five ounces, and is small enough to fit on virtually any nightstand or desk. The Microdock also charges your iPhone or iPod, and has a self-contained speaker for listening and charging on the go. It’s available now for $59.99 retail. Both new docks can be paired with XtremeMac’s free Alarm Clock app for iOS devices, which turns your iPhone or iPod Touch’s screen into a digital clock that matches the color scheme for the two new docks.

Mophie Gives First Look at New Juice Pack

MobieJuicePackAiriPhone4.jpg

Can you believe the Mophie Juice Pack will soon be 7? Well, seventh generation, that is. Mophie is now giving a look at the seventh generation Juice Pack Air, which offers on-the-go power for the iPhone 4 via a lightweight and ultra-thin external rechargeable battery. Use it to nearly double your iPhone’s battery life. Its soft touch hardware also provides protection from bumps, bangs, and drops.

The Juice Pack 4 is already available for purchase on the Mophie site for $79.95. It’s good for up to an additional six hours of 3G talk time, up to 36 hours of audio playback, and up to 9 hours of video playback. The secret is the highly condensed lithium polymer battery, which delivers a large amount of juice in a small shape and offers built-in overcharge, short circuit, and temperature protection.
