iPad misses out on Office romance, but gains a $900 app and more

Stephen Elop, el presidente of Microsoft’s business division has stated that his company has “no current plans” to port its Office productivity suite over to the iPad. Contenting itself with a “wait and see” approach, the Redmond outfit isn’t willing to completely close the door of possibility, but earlier hopes of seeing family favorites like Word and Excel on the iPad might have to be doused for the time being. Should that hamper the enjoyment of your new slate, you might want to console yourself with the extravagantly priced SiteClone Publisher, also available for the iPhone, which converts $900 of your hard-earned cashola into a tool that downloads data off particular sites while online, so that the user may access that content even without a connection. Doesn’t sound worthy of a tenth of its price, but maybe the government and corporate entities it’s aimed at will appreciate it more. Finally, Apple Insider is reporting whispers that Apple retail employees will be getting freebie iPads at some indeterminate point in the future, while NeoSmart has a particularly insightful breakdown of the differences between PowerPC, x86, and ARM CPU instruction sets. iPad apps: games that stand out

Now that we’ve had a couple days with the iPad, some apps are rising to the top and monopolizing our lounging time. We’ll have some more roundups for you in just a little bit, but we thought we’d start off with one of the iPad’s most natural talents: gaming. The large screen and hardy processor offer a wild in-between space, much more immersive and “stunning” than a PSP, DS, or iPhone game, but hardly on par with modern laptop or desktop graphics. We haven’t leapfrogged any platforms here, it’s just an evolution, but it’s a pretty fun evolution, complete with multitouch gestures, accelerometer tilts, and cheesy soundtracks pumped out over the iPads surprisingly loud speaker. Of course, these games aren’t cheap anymore — most clock in at $9.99, often with the threat of “introductory pricing” — so we thought we’d wade through the masses and pluck out some of our favorites as well as a few titles to be wary of. iPad apps: defining experiences from the first wave


There are now over 1,348 approved apps for the iPad. That’s on top of the 150,000 iPad-compatible iPhone programs already available in the App Store. When Apple’s tablet PC launches, just hours from now, it will have a software library greater than that of any handheld in history — not counting the occasional UMPC. That said, the vast majority of even those 1,348 iPad apps are not original. They were designed for the iPhone, a device with a comparatively pokey processor and a tiny screen, and most have just been tweaked slightly, upped in price and given an “HD” suffix — as if that somehow justified the increased cost.

Besides, we’ve seen the amazing potential programs have on iPhone, Android, Blackberry, Windows Mobile and webOS when given access to a touchscreen, always-on data connection, GPS, cloud storage and WiFi — but where are the apps that truly define iPad? What will take advantage of its extra headroom, new UI paradigms and multitouch real estate? Caught between netbook and smartphone, what does the iPad do that the iPhone cannot? After spending hours digging through the web and new iPad section of the App Store, we believe we have a number of reasonably compelling answers.

iBooks app meets App Store, produces US-only iBookstore offspring

Get ready to welcome some amazing wood grain effects into your lives, future iPad owners, for the iBooks app has just landed at the App Store. Proudly proclaimed as being “designed exclusively for the iPad,” this app gives you direct access to the iBookstore, which will offer free samples of books ahead of purchase and a brand new way for you to channel money into Cupertino pockets. Built-in search, highlighting and bookmarking features are augmented by text-to-speech functionality and ePub format support. Funnily enough, iBooks will only support DRM-free ePub files sourced from outside the iBookstore, but no mention is made as to whether its own wares will be similarly unimpeded. Speaking of restrictions, the whole operation is still limited to the United States, leaving the Stephen Frys of this world sighing wistfully from across the pond.

Netflix iPad app now available in the App Store (update: ABC Player, too)

We’d gotten wind of the Netflix iPad app earlier this morning, but when it wasn’t included in the first batch of apps to hit the App Store we just assumed it was coming on Saturday — or possibly even later. But fear not, movie fans: it’s just gone live, complete with screenshot confirmation that it’ll do streaming video. That’s a huge win for Apple and the iPad, given the restrictions on mobile devices Netflix has traditionally operated under — remember, Microsoft was only allowed to say the Windows Phone 7 Series Netflix app was a “prototype” when it was demoed at MIX. We’re guessing the blurry line between the iPad and regular laptops / netbooks worked in Netflix’s favor here, but that’s just a semantic debate — we’re much more amused by the fact that the app itself is rated 12+ in the App Store for “Simulated Gambling,” “Fantasy Violence,” and “Suggestive Themes,” simply because it plays back movies from your queue that might have such scandalous content. Oh, App Store — you truly are a paradise of misapplied bureaucratic intent unequaled in the tragic history of our civilization.

Update: Looks like the ABC Player (opens iTunes) is now also available in the app store for the low, low price of nada.

iPad apps now live in the App Store

Ready to start paying more for giant iPhone apps? Get that credit card ready — tons of iPad apps are now live in the App Store, even though the iPad itself is under lock and key until Saturday. Lots of the expected stuff here, like Brushes, Twitteriffic, and the Wall Street Journal app, but there’s a few things we’re definitely interested in playing with, like the Desktop Connect VNC client, the ABC Player, and quite a few apps focused on printing. Yes, printing — apparently the ability to print a document from the iPad will cost you at least $2, and probably more like $5. Magical and revolutionary, indeed. New doubleTwist for Mac adds built-in Android Market functionality

The latest version of doubleTwist for the Mac (1.0b1b to be precise, available now) adds a whole new Android Market element to the application. Much akin to the iTunes Store for apps, doubleTwist lets you browse Android apps in a beautified, desktop interface, but the “twist” is that you can’t actually download and sync apps with your phone. Instead, the Android Market browser presents QR codes for scanning with your Android phone and directly downloading the apps on the handset like you do already. Sure, desktop app downloads, backup, and syncing would certainly be better, but this is a nice start at least. D-Twist (as we like to call it) is also getting audio playback on the Mac, as well as podcast search and playback, with podcast subscription and syncing coming next (it’s already on Windows). Meanwhile, Windows users will have to wait until the next major version for Android Market. Not to worry, you can do the exact same sort of app browsing at apps.doubletwist.com on any plain old browser. You can even check out the Engadget app right here.

Update: We’re trying to play around a bit with the app, but at the moment the search functionality is broken and most of the QR codes are handing us bad URLs for apps. Hang tight! Every once in a while we see a blip of non-brokenness, but we’re guessing there are some server hiccups at the moment holding us back from Android Market enlightenment.

Verizon’s V Cast Apps store is a go, first on BlackBerry Storm2

Right on cue (sort of), Verizon Wireless’ branded V Cast Apps market has finally seen the light of day. We’ve actually heard about the store since last summer, but it wasn’t until the carrier’s LTE forum at CTIA that we had a confirmed date. As noted then, the first device to get the portal is the BlackBerry Storm2, with other RIM devices (and hopefully other mobile platforms) in the coming months. It’s not taking the place of BlackBerry App World, so now that we’ve got two coexisting markets on one device, it’s time to see just how strong that V Cast branding is…

iPad’s trailing costs: like the iPod touch, only bigger (updated)

Whether or not you think the iPad is in and of itself a worthy purchase, let’s not forget the investment doesn’t end at the retail counter or online shopping cart. Two little newsbits have popped up to serve as a helpful reminder to just that effect. The first comes way of verbiage from the iPad end-user licensing agreement dug up by MacRumors; in a nutshell, it suggests that while iPad OS 4.x updates will be provided gratis, subsequent releases (5.x, 6.x, and so on) could be offered at a premium, à la how iPod touch handles firmware. This is far from a confirmation, but it’s well within Apple’s right to do so. The second bit is derived by The Consumerist by way a supposed leaked app store video. Comparing the prices of iPad-optimized software with the iPhone equivalents showed quite a hefty uptick in consumer cost — e.g., $4.99 Flight Control HD vs. $0.99 Flight Control. The pool of eight apps seen in the video would cost $53 in all to purchase, while the same set for the iPhone is $27. That screen real estate don’t come cheap, y’know — that is, should the prices seen prove legit. At this point we can’t confirm, and more than likely, we won’t know for sure until the eleventh hour.

Update: The BBC has word direct from developers that iPad apps will indeed be costlier than their iPhone / iPod touch brethren. Multiple devs are cited in the Beeb‘s article saying that their 99 cent apps will grow in price to $1.99 and $2.99 price points for the slate device [thanks, Ben].

iPad roundup: New York Times and others get HTML5 video, iPad app store demo, and more

The momentum towards HTML5 and away from (or at least in parallel with) Flash seems to be accelerating with today’s launch of the free Brightcove Experience framework for HTML5 — a “way to publish, distribute, and monetize web video for the iPad and other Apple devices” according to the Brightcove press release. While Brightcove might not be a household name, some of its 1,000 customers, including Time Inc. and The New York Times (a Brightcove investor), certainly are — both of whom are already using the new HTML5 solution in preparation for the iPad’s April 3rd US launch. A real coup for the Flash-hating Steve Jobs if you start factoring in the rumored Flash-free NPR and Wall Street Journal iPad sites as well as that little HTML5 iPad test CBS was testing out in the open last week.

Also rumored for launch is an iBookstore filled with 30,000 free e-Books courtesy of the Gutenberg Project. See the screengrab evidence after the break in addition to a purported video walkthrough of the iPad store. The video previews several new “HD” formatted iPad apps that we’ve already seen as well as a few new ones like Twitterific. Sorry, still no Hulu HD. The mouse pointer in the video, however, makes it clear that this is running on desktop somewhere, not on an iPad. Still, it definitely looks the part.
