WSJ: Android being considered for HP netbook, Dell MID and smartphone

Sure, we’ve already seen Android pop up on the HP 2133 Mini-Note thanks to some intrepid DIYers, but now comes word from The Wall Street Journal that HP’s got programmers looking into using the Google OS officially for an upcoming netbook. VP of the PC division Satjiv Chahil’s quoted as saying they’re in the process of assessing its capabilities, so don’t get your hopes up anytime soon. Also mentioned is Asus, which we already knew about from back in February. Interestingly, the report states that Dell’s been tweaking the software for use in multiple devices due out this year, including a MID and one of those long-rumored smartphones — that is, assuming they make one that can tickle the carrier’s fancy.

Update: HP confirms that it is testing Android but “has made no decision yet whether to offer Android in products.”

Asus makes optical-endowed Eee PC 1004DN official

Asus makes optical-endowed Eee PC 1004DN official

What’s that, didn’t trust last week’s DigiTimes rumory confirmation of the new 1004DN addition to the Eee PC family? Rest easy, as Asus has come forward and made the first optical-offering Eee officially official. The machine packs a Super-Multi DVD writer, what looks to be the same pinkie-friendly chiclet keyboard as the 1000HE, a 1.66GHz Atom N280 processor, up to 120GB of storage, and even a fingerprint scanner. Price and release date are still undecided, but it shouldn’t be long before we find out just how well those legendarily long-winded Eee batteries fare at spinning up your Battlestar Galactica boxed sets.

ASUS 15.6-inch Eee Top all-in-one now shipping

Good news, pre-orderers. ASUS‘ 15.6-inch Eee Top all-in-one PC is now shipping from legitimate e-tailers around the web. Just in case you’ve forgotten just under six bills buys you a 1.6GHz Atom CPU, 1GB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive and Windows XP Home. In other words, netbook components tucked within an LCD. Of course, we’d recommend holding off for the much larger, much more HD-friendly ET2203 and ET2003, but it’s your loot.

[Thanks, Jamil]

ASUS announces Eee PC E1004DN with optical drive, 1008HA gets a release date

In a bombshell of moderate proportions, the gang at DigiTimes have reported that ASUS will be following Mouse Computer’s lead (when was the last time you heard that?), and have announced the first Eee PC equipped with an optical drive, the E1004DN. This bad boy sports an Intel Atom N280 CPU, a 120GB HDD, and will be in the ballpark of NT $18,000 – 20,000 (roughly $531 – $590). It should see the light of day sometime in mid-April. The same source reports that the Eee PC 1008HA will be getting its release in May. Out of curiosity, we asked @billyjoel for a comment and have yet to receive a response.

ASUS quietly reveals Atom N280-equipped Eee PC 1002H

Till now, the only N280-packin’ Eee PC of any stature was the amazingly long-lasting 1000HE. Thankfully for everyone who appreciates minute improvements in speed, ASUS has just pushed out another with the mildly quicker chip: the Eee PC 1002H. Not the 1002HA, mind you — just the 1002H. Outside of the new CPU, however, most everything remains exactly the same from the ‘HA’ edition, including a 10-inch LED-backlit WSVGA display, 1GB of DDR2 RAM, a 160GB hard drive, 1.3 megapixel webcam, inbuilt stereo speakers, a multicard reader, VGA out, three USB 2.0 sockets and audio in / out jacks. There’s no mention of a price or release date, but it should arrive in Pearl White, Pink and Black whenever launch day comes.

ASUS showcases HD-minded Eee Top ET2203 and ET2003

Amongst many, many other things at CeBIT, ASUS also found time to showcase two new Eee Top all-in-one PCs, though it completely failed to make any deal of it at all. In fact, it didn’t even bother hosting up specifications placards, leaving us curious as to what these offer over the existing (and smaller) Eee Top machines. Aside from boasting 22- and 20-inch panels (respectively), NotebookItalia noticed that the ET2203 and ET2003 both included an HDMI socket and a Blu-ray optical drive, not to mention a natural affinity towards kitchens. We’ll keep an ear to the ground for more on these in the coming weeks, but for now, you’ll have to let ye old imagination handle the hard work.

ASUS G71Gx boats of GeForce GTX 260M graphics, other extravagances

A followup to last year’s G71, the G71Gx has ASUS at its extravagant best. The 17-inch laptop packs a WUXGA (1920 x 1200) resolution, backed up by a brand-new NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260M graphics card with 1GB of VRAM. There’s also room for 12GB of RAM and dual 500GB hard drives inside, along with Blu-ray and Altec Lansing speakers to wrap it up with a bow. No word on price, but we’re guessing ASUS isn’t stuffing these things in cereal boxes.

ASUS plans to ship Fold / Unfold laptop concept this year!

It may sound like sheer insanity, but it’s the right sort of crazy sauce if you ask us. ASUS is planning to make its Fold / Unfold laptop concept into a for-reals product this year, with plans to ship by Q3. That seems pretty accelerated for something we’ve only seen in concept form, and something with such a new and interesting form factor — Fold / Unfold’s keyboard slides backwards as you open the display to maximize room for keys, trackpad and palm rest (video of the “folding” action is after the break). The concepts we’ve seen have also been suspiciously thin, so hopefully ASUS can pull this off without compromising this delicious form factor too terribly much. Sadly, that dual-touchscreen concept is further out, there’s currently no slated window for commercialization.

Video: ASUS Eee Station PC NAS interface walkthrough

We’ve spotted ASUS’ D200 (or Eee Station PC NAS, as it’s apparently now known) once before, but we took the opportunity here at CeBIT to shove our camera all up in the touchscreen in order to give you, the prospective buyer, a look at what this here Atom-based NAS has to offer. The specs on this thing read like a bona fide PC: 1.6GHz Atom CPU, 2GB of DDR2 RAM, room for two 3.5-inch SATA II drives, a 3.5-inch touch panel, 802.11n WiFi, DVD-RW slot-loading optical drive, four gigabit Ethernet ports, USB / DVI sockets and a built-in three-cell Li-ion battery to give you 15 minutes of emergency time should your power fail. Our experience with the touchscreen was less than amazing, with the edges seeming to be noticeably less responsive than the middle. Sure, we don’t expect you’ll be touching your NAS all that often, but hey, there it is. Visually, it was as sharp as it needed to be, and the whole unit just screamed sexy. Mash play above to check out the menus, or dive in below if still photography is what floats your boat.
