Tesla’s been showing off its Silicon Valley-bred saloon for months now, from the touchscreen-laden console to the mechanical bits beneath its shapely skin. We even got a spread of a road going Model S last month, and this October a lucky few will get to cruise in some beta test cars at Tesla’s factory in Fremont. These beta versions are “over ninety percent” of what the production Model S will be, and after the ride, the chosen get to tour Tesla’s manufacturing facility. We plan on being there when the new EV is put through its paces, so stay tuned for our impressions of the Model S this autumn.

OnStar Family Link brings loved ones closer together through vehicle tracking

Add this to the ever-growing list of things we’re glad we didn’t have back when we were teenagers. GM this week announced the release of Family Link, the latest addition to its OnStar service. The new feature lets subscribers track the exact location of vehicles at any time via an online map. Subscribers can also set up a text message alert to keep on top of the car’s location. There’s certainly potential for the feature as a safety tool, but it’s also no doubt a long awaited addition for overbearing parents everywhere. The service is beginning life as an invitation-only pilot program that includes around 10,000 OnStar subscribers.

BMW unveils new i3 and revamped i8 concepts, we await our automotive future (video)

BMW’s been teasing us with its vision for electric motoroing for years, and today, folks, the trend continues. The German automaker has unveiled two concepts from its upcoming i sub-brand: the city-dwelling i3 and a rehashed version of its i8. This is the first time we’ve officially seen the smaller of the two, as the car formerly known as the Megacity had only been spied in an official render and during routine testing at the arctic circle. It’ll haul four peeps with its 150km range (around 100 miles) and accelerate from 0-60mph in around 8 seconds. As for those with range anxiety, the German company will soothe such fears with an optional range-extending motor dubbed “REx.” Either variant could land in your garage in 2013, where you’ll be able top them up in 6 hours with a standard socket, or up to eighty percent in an hour if you’re rocking a spiffy high capacity charger.

The i8, which you’ll recall for its radical aerodynamic design and hybrid diesel-electric drivetrain, has received a bevy of aerodynamic tweaks and junked its oil burner, opting for a gasoline one instead. Engine swap aside, the sporty coupé apparently drinks only 2.7 liters per 100km — 87 mpg (!) for yanks — which is unreal in a car that’ll accelerate to 62mph in 4.6 seconds. Sound too good to be true? We’ll have to wait until 2014 to see if München can make good on those promises, but in the meantime feel free to peruse the galleries, videos, and PR after the break.

Ford’s V2V tech talks to other cars, may or may not temper road rage (video)

You know we’re headed safely into the future when Ford starts trotting out ‘talking car‘ technology. It’s highly unlikely that your next-gen Taurus will start criticizing your outfit selection anytime soon, but it will alert you to potential unseen collisions. The V2V (Vehicle-to-Vehicle) communication powering this auto evolution differs slightly from existing peer-to-peer tech — wedding GPS with a dedicated WiFi network, these autobots are only five years away from giving K.I.T.T. all sorts of company. Toss in a bit of FCC-channel security, add a dashboard of flashing-red LEDs, and you’re looking at a car that’ll aggressively bleep and bloop you out of harm’s way. Rest easy Big Brother types, Ford says the cars won’t be automagically controlling themselves — you still have to rely on those well-honed ninja reflexes for that.

Tesla Roadster nears the end of its production run, company switches focus to Model S

Well, we knew this day had to come eventually: various sources are reporting that Tesla Motors has announced that production of its Roadster will soon be drawing to a close, a scant three years (and a few months) after initially launching. “I think there’s a handful of cars left to sell in the US,” said CEO Elon Musk. “People in Europe and Japan probably have another six months [while in] the US, it’s maybe a month or two.” We always thought that the company’s approach was pretty gutsy, and maybe that’s exactly what the automotive world needed — a long-range (if expensive) ride that screamed: “this ain’t your parents’ EV.” (Cue guitar solo.) For the time being, the company will be switching its focus to the more subdued Model S sedan, although we won’t be surprised if we see more badass vehicles from these guys in the future. We aren’t sure it’ll help with the tears, but our Roadster Sport 2.5 test drive will (thankfully) live on forever.

Tesla Model S is almost production-ready, does photo shoot to prove it


You’re looking at an unlikely picture: two Tesla EVs on the same street. The Silicon Valley carmaker is hoping to become more mainstream, however, when it releases its Model S sedan next year to complement the exuberantly expensive Roadster 2.5. Tesla has just released photos of the latest, nearly production-ready build of the Model S to whet our appetites. The shots reveal a couple of sleek cosmetic changes to the front bumper and body panels, but mainly we’re just happy to see the S rolling on schedule. Oh yes, and there’s another glimpse of the 17-inch infotainment console, which Auto Evolution now reports will be accompanied by built-in 3G. Sounds dandy, but that $57,400 starting price had better include a data plan. Man, who are we kidding?

Israel gets its first EV battery swap station, makes charging stations obsolete

Don’t get us wrong, we think electric vehicles are totally rad and all, but there’s still the whole recharging thing that makes us a little wary. That’s why we’re stoked to hear that Better Place’s first battery swap station for EVs (and not just special Japanese cabbies) has officially opened its doors in Israel… for owners of the Renault Fluence Z.E. All it takes is an RFID card to enter the carwash-esque structure, and robots from below swap out your empty battery for a fully charged alternative while you occupy yourself for three minutes. No word on how much it’ll cost for the opportunity, but we’ve got an inkling it won’t be cheap. Fortunately, we’ve got apps and “get you home” guarantees for that additional peace of mind, but we do hope the concept eventually makes its way over to our shores. Of course, we’re also still waiting for eternal battery life in all of our electronics, but until that day comes invisible robots changing batteries for us will suffice.

Smart Fortwo ED gets official EPA ratings: 94 MPG city, 79 MPG on the highway

Looks like “Team 250” is primed to add a few new members now that the EPA has revealed its official MPGe ratings for Smart’s Fortwo EDs. Rated at 94 miles-per-gallon in the city and 79 on the highway, the car takes motorists 63 miles per charge — making it slightly less able than Nissan’s Leaf with its 73 mile range, 106 MPG in town, and 92 MPG on the open road. Now that the Fortwo ED has its governmental blessing, interested parties can lease one from selected dealers — sorry folks, buying’s not an option — for a hefty $599 per-month, which seems staggeringly high compared to the $349 monthly lease rate for the larger, more capable Leaf. Perhaps the Smart squad won’t be getting many new teammates after all.

Tesla Model S will support third-party apps and text-to-voice, red lights will never be the same

Now that pretty much every gizmo from your smartphone to TV has apps available for it, what’s the next logical frontier? Of course, your car! Yesterday, Tesla CEO Elon Musk told Cleantech Forum attendees in San Francisco that the upcoming Model S would indeed come with support for third-party applications to run on that monster 17-inch infotainment console. We’re happy to see the company encouraging developers to put that Tegra chip to good use, though we can’t help but worry about the myriad distractions that could come along with it. Of course, we’re still in the dark about what OS is powering the whole shebang, but we’re sure there will be a port of Angry Birds before you can come to a complete stop.

GM shows off Terrain SUV with noise cancellation, says silence equals fuel efficiency

GM claims its new Terrain has other SUVs beat when it comes to fuel efficiency, and they’re citing active noise cancellation — a concept near and dear to audiophiles everywhere — as one of the driving factors that puts it 4MPG above the competition. Basically, the Terrain’s enlisted a new one-touch “Eco mode” that allows its four-cylinder engine to run at a lower torque, decreasing engine speeds, and thus saving gas. The thing is, this increased fuel efficiency comes with a “low-end frequency boom,” which is where the noise cancellation sets in: two microphones built in to the car’s headliner detect the boom, prompting a frequency generator to pump counteracting sound waves through Terrain’s speakers. Simply put, GM’s just getting rid of an unpleasant hum. So a quieter car isn’t necessarily a greener car, but we’ll take a more fuel efficient SUV any day.
