MetroTwit is the Perfect Twitter Client for Windows

Windows twitter

There are plenty of Twitter clients out there for all of the different desktop platforms, but it seems like many of them are powered by Adobe Air since it provides a no-hassle cross-platform solution to developers. I always prefer native apps though, and MetroTwit is a shining example of how smooth a native Twitter client can be. It has a beautiful interface, all of the right features, and continues to get better over time.

One of the features that was just added last week was an in-app media viewer for third-party sites like YouTube and TwitPic. I hate apps that open images or videos in a browser window because it can really disrupt you while you’re reading through your timeline. Now that they’ve added this feature I really feel as though MetroTwit has earned its spot as one of the best (if not the best) Twitter client available for Windows.

If you haven’t already tried out MetroTwit here’s a look at some of the other features that makes it so great:

  • Drag-and-drop image uploads
  • Uses TwitLonger if you go over the character limit
  • View entire conversations
  • Infinite scrolling of tweets
  • URL shortening and previews
  • Autocomplete for usernames and hashtags
  • Windows 7 taskbar integration
  • Customize the appearance with themes
  • Notifications
  • Resizable columns

The cherry on top is that MetroTwit is completely free. They did throw in some ads to try and recoup some of the costs, but they removed them after they got some feedback from their users. It’s possible that they will introduce the ads again in the future to keep the app free, but I’m sure at that point they’ll also provide some way to remove them (which may be in the form of a small fee).

New Mac Leopard Dock on Windows

It seems as though there are some big fans of the Mac OS Leopard Dock that will be launching later this year with the new operating system. Well, they might be Leopard fans, but they’re running Windows. 🙂

I’m talking about a developer who took the latest Beta version of the free RK Launcher application, and bundled skins, icons, and plugins together in a single package that give this Dock clone a true Leopard feel to it. Here’s the result of the hard work:

  • 7 different languages: English, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Russian, and Turkish
  • Integrated KKMenu simulates the Stacks feature on the Leopard Dock (pictured above). Here’s what the configuration of the Stacks looks like:
Mac Leopard Stacks on Windows Editor
  • Over 175 wonderfully reflective icons are included for the most popular apps
  • Screen capture utility that’s actually pretty useful for taking fast screenshots
  • Mac-like calendar docklet
  • Shutdown manager so that you don’t have to go to the Start Menu to turn your computer off or restart it
  • Address book

I tried this out, and I have to say that I’m really impressed with all the eye candy it has to offer. If you’ve been itching to get your hands on a free Mac-like dock for Windows then I don’t think it could be any easier than this!

You can download the Leopard Inspired RK Launcher (for Windows XP/Vista) in this forum (no registration required), and here is a list of what’s included with the 50MB download.

CyberNotes: Powerful Free Backup Software

This article was written on April 15, 2008 by CyberNet.

CyberNotes
Time Saving Tuesday

A few weeks ago we demonstrated an extremely simple backup solution called IdleBackup. It was nothing too fancy, and this time around we wanted to go to the other extreme with a freeware Windows backup application that will really knock your socks off. The program is called Cobian Backup, and I wouldn’t have found it without Leland’s help.

Cobian Backup is one of the most full-featured backup utilities that I’ve seen, and the best thing about it is that it’s completely free. I’ve been a proud owner of SyncBackSE for quite some time now, but Cobian Backup includes almost all of the same features in it’s latest version 9 Beta release. The interface is well designed, creating and scheduling backups is simple, and it is busting at the seams with customization!

–Features–

Now I could have just listed off the features that the developer had put together, but I actually think the developer is rather modest of what the program is truly capable of. So I put together my own set of features highlighting all of the things that I find to be the most useful in Cobian:

  • Can be installed as a service, which means it is able to run even when a user isn’t logged into the computer
  • 3 different types of backups are available:
    • Full backups: Every single file in the source will be copied or compressed. If you are overwriting, every file will be replaced. If Overwrite is unchecked, you will have several copies of the same source.
    • Incremental:  The program will check if the source has been changed from the last backup. If there is no need to copy the file, it will be skipped, saving backup time. The incremental procedure checks the Archive bit attribute of the file. You may want to manually reset the attribute to force a full backup: use the “Set the archive attributes” on the Task menu.
    • Differential: The program will check if the source has been changed from the last FULL backup. If there is no need to copy the file, it will be skipped, saving backup time. The differential procedure checks the Archive bit attribute of the file. You may want to manually reset the attribute to force a full backup: use the “Set the archive attributes” on the Task menu.
    • Dummy task: This backup doesn’t need a source or a destination. It is useful to use the task just as an scheduler to execute applications, close services, reboot the computer, etc.
  • Remotely connect to and manage your backups (Cobian will need to be installed on both the host and client machine to do this). Go to Tools -> Remote Client in Cobian to access this feature.
  • Backup to or from a network or FTP location
  • Compress your backups using 7-Zip or regular ZIP
    • Split the compressed files up into multiple files according to a maximum size that you specify
  • You can have multiple source and/or destinations
  • You can have a timestamp added to backup filenames so that existing backups are not overwritten
  • Perform a variety of actions before and/or after a backup starts:
    • Pause for a specified duration
    • Start or close a program
    • Start or stop a service
    • Restart or shutdown the computer
  • If you choose to perform an incremental or differential backup you can set Cobian to automatically do a full backup every X backups, where “X” is any number you want.
  • It will retrieve files from the Volume Shadow Copy (on XP and Vista) if a file is locked by another application
  • You can provide a list of files and/or folders to exclude
  • UNICODE support

–Creating a Backup–

When making a decision on which backup application to use it is pretty critical to see first-hand whether it is going to do what you want it to. And that’s what this screenshot gallery is for!

In Cobian there are seven different areas that you can configure for each backup task that you create. Below you’ll find a screenshot of each different area so that you can appropriately decide whether Cobian will be able to perform the backups in the way that you want it to.

–Overview–

Cobian Backup is a tremendous application that will likely have much, if not all of what you’re looking for. It might take some time to get the backups setup just the way you want, but once you’re done the end result could save you days of frustration. Believe me, in the last two years I’ve had two different hard drives fail on me. If it wasn’t for the regular backups that I performed there could have been a lot of unrecoverable settings, pictures, and documents. Software like Cobian Backup can really come through in a pinch!

Nokia Camera Beta App Arrives On All Lumia Models

Nokia Camera Beta App Arrives On All Lumia ModelsNokia has more or less successfully positioned their smartphones to be devices that offer a fantastic camera experience along the way, and the PureView technology which is part of the mix happens to play a large role in perpetuating that viewpoint, too. After all, who can resist the large words “41 megapixels” emblazoned in advertisements for the Nokia Lumia 1020? It is more or less bound to attract plenty of attraction for sure! Well, Nokia has also come up with a highly advanced Camera app in order to take advantage of the advanced cameras in select Nokia Lumia handsets, but today marks a new milestone. Nokia has announced that as long as you own a Lumia device which runs on the Windows Phone 8 mobile operating system, you will be able to download a public beta version of the Nokia Camera app.

This means the Nokia Camera app will no longer be an exclusive app on a PureView-powered camera in a Lumia handset. This particular app will arrive with similar features as that of the existing Nokia Camera model, and in due time, do expect experimental new features to be thrown into the mix, while existing ones will be refined. And when ready, expect these to end up in the stable, non-Beta Camera app via the standard Store update process.

    Google Analytics Desktop App Preview

This article was written on September 17, 2007 by CyberNet.

    Google Analytics Reporting Suite
Click to Enlarge Demo Account Screenshot

I don’t think that many people would argue that Google Analytics is among the best visitor tracking solutions available, but one of the problems is that you’re restricted to viewing the stats in your browser. The Analytics Reporting Suite will be the first program to bring Google Analytics, in its entirety, outside of your browser and on to your desktop!

I signed up early on to be part of the Beta testing, and I’m pleased to report that the first installment of invites has been sent out. The Analytics Reporting Suite runs on Adobe AIR, so you must have that installed if you want this to work. After using it for just a little while I have to say that I’m quite impressed with how well this mimics the online site. It even has the options to export your stats to various formats (PDF, Excel, and XML). You can also have multiple tabs open making it easy to switch between different types of stats.

Something I hope the developer decides to implement is an easy way to view the current day’s hourly stats. This is something Google Analytics made extremely difficult when they launched the new version earlier this year, and it has received a lot of criticism from the users. A simple "Today" button would satisfy me, and I would think that it can easily be integrated into the Analytics Reporting Suite.

New user registrations have since been closed for the Analytics Reporting Suite, but the site says that you can email the developer if you would still like to get in on the Beta. In the meantime you can play around with the Google Analytics Widget that he has already released which is nice for a quick overview on your stats.

Note: Both the Analytics Reporting Suite and the Analytics Widget run on Windows and Macs due to the multi-platform nature of Adobe AIR.

Firefox 3 Beta 4 is Here!

This article was written on March 10, 2008 by CyberNet.

    firefox3b4

It’s here! Firefox 3 Beta 4 has been added to Mozilla’s FTP’s, and the distribution has already begun among download sites. This release was expected by the end of February, but they must have hit a few bumps in the road. And now Firefox 3 Beta 5 is currently scheduled for late March.

If you’re wondering what’s new in this release there isn’t that much that I can show you. The release notes for Firefox 3 Beta 4 have not been updated to reflect the release, and so I winged it:

    • The Vista theme now shows up correctly for those of you running Vista on your computer, and you can see the various icons in the screenshot above.
    • The really good news lies in some of the improvements that they’ve made under-the-hood. For example, as we previously outlined Firefox 3 really takes the cake on the SunSpider JavaScript test. Those changes have been rolled into Firefox 3 Beta 4, and hopefully you’ll see some better performance because of it.
    • Hundreds of bug fixes have landed in this release.

Okay, now it’s your turn to try it out! Mozilla hasn’t updated the official Beta site yet, but the necessary files have been added to the FTP. Our downloader, as always, balances the load across all the servers that are hosting the setup file which eases the burden on Mozilla’s servers. So download until your heart is content:

Note: The build ID is 2008030714, which means this version was compiled on March 7th. This is not the same version that was posted last week by some download sites, such as BetaNews.

Chrome OS 32 beta makes it easier to find the right window

    Acer Chromebook C720

Windowing has been a familiar sight in Chrome OS for a while now, but it hasn’t always been easy to find the window you’re looking for. That search should be much quicker if you’re running the just-launched Chrome OS 32 beta, though. The test release brings Vista-style window thumbnails when using Alt-Tab to switch tasks, and the overview button now shows an organized view of all those panes. Early adopters can get the beta today, although it’s not currently available for either the original Acer C7 or the HP Pavilion 14 Chromebook.
