California carpool exemptions expire, quashing yellow-sticker envy

California carpool exemptions expire, quashing yellow-sticker envyIt looks like it’s time to kiss that sweet HOV goodbye for lone California hybrid drivers. No, there hasn’t been a spike in Clean Air Vehicle sticker thievery — this time it’s official. According to the California DMV, those little yellow stickers that once gave hybrid owners the right to ride solo in carpool lanes have expired, leaving some 85,000 drivers to fall in line with the rest of the state’s commuters. You’ll forgive us if we don’t shed a tear over this announcement.

Toyota Scion iQ EV plugs-in for official 2012 launch

The Scion iQ, Toyota’s tiny EV car that could, got an official 2012 launch yesterday at the automaker’s annual dealer meeting in Vegas. The quiet, though far from specific launch announcement frees this 65 mile-per-charge roadster from its pre-production limbo. Shown off last March at the Geneva Motor Show, the Scion iQ had been put on indefinite hold while factory production in the carmaker’s disaster-stricken homeland ramped back up to speed. With all signs now set to go, the only red-light still lingering is the micro-subcompact’s undisclosed MSRP. Considering the recent bankruptcy of Norwegian Think’s EV offering, we’re glad to see Toyota looking out for its little guy.

GMC showroom app tells you where to pick up your dream SUV, doesn’t help with down payment

Ever felt the need to customize vehicles and search dealer inventory, right from the comfort of your smartphone? Us neither, but here’s the General with another app to whet our appetites. While certainly not the first of its kind, the GMC showroom app for iOS (coming soon to Android), allows you to specify drive-type, trim, and both exterior / interior colors. Once content with your selections, you’re shown nearby dealers carrying exact replicas of your magnificent taste. Unfortunately for us, the app makes no mention of the closest EN-V. If SUVs are your thing, however, have a peep at the free app at the source link below.

1996 Corvette converted into a 2011 electric odyssey (video)

A supercharged Chevrolet Corvette may have been all the hotness back in 1996, but times and tastes change and now people are all about the electric boogaloo. Today we get to witness one modern man’s transition into this brave new world, a Wayne Bickley from California, who has gutted his crow-black ’96 Corvette and replaced the messy internal combustion setup with a set of 18 XS Power XP1000 batteries, a DC electric motor, and his own clutchless six-speed transmission. The end result doesn’t really look much different, but its 20-mile “spirited driving” range and 85mph top speed will surely feel different and it does also sound very much like something from the future. Check out this modernized Chevy on video after the break.

Review: Jabra Freeway Bluetooth Speaker

Jabra has long been considered one of the industry leaders when it comes to providing mobile communications accessories. Their Bluetooth headsets exist in such a wide range, it has often been said that there was something for everyone in Jabra’s lineup. When I look for a Bluetooth device, I want something that is light on […]

UK students’ 1,980 MPG car scores first place in marathon race, by a 1,000 MPG margin

A car that looks like the one above and gets the “equivalent” of 1,980 miles to the gallon (and one gallon only) is certainly impressive enough on its own, but it’s all the more so when you consider that it’s driven by a 14-year-old and built by his classmates (with a little assistance, of course). This particular vehicle hails from Kingdown School in Wiltshire, England, and it won the recent Mallory Park Mileage Marathon by a margin of more than 1,000 MPG over its next closest competitor. Not surprisingly, however, the students are already looking to improve things for next years’ race, and say they’re planning on upgrading the engine for starters. No word if they’re considering an X-Prize challenge after that.

Volkswagen Temporary Auto Pilot brings hands-free driving to the highway

Would you feel comfortable driving down the highway with a Temporary Auto Pilot (TAP) behind the wheel of your next Volkswagen? A new technology proposed by the German automaker won’t take you from A to B automatically, but it will help out with more simple driving, so you can take your hands off the wheel while cruising down the highway at up to 130km/h (about 80 mph), for example. The system pairs Lane Assist with cruise control, and can be overridden by the driver at any time. The TAP system’s Pilot Mode uses radar, laser, camera, and ultrasonic sensors to maintain a safe distance between vehicles, start and stop in traffic, and slow down before a bend. Speed is set by the driver, who you’ll need to remain aware of your surroundings in case you need to take over control — so don’t get too comfortable poking around the menus on that AppRadio just yet.

Tesla Roadster nears the end of its production run, company switches focus to Model S

Well, we knew this day had to come eventually: various sources are reporting that Tesla Motors has announced that production of its Roadster will soon be drawing to a close, a scant three years (and a few months) after initially launching. “I think there’s a handful of cars left to sell in the US,” said CEO Elon Musk. “People in Europe and Japan probably have another six months [while in] the US, it’s maybe a month or two.” We always thought that the company’s approach was pretty gutsy, and maybe that’s exactly what the automotive world needed — a long-range (if expensive) ride that screamed: “this ain’t your parents’ EV.” (Cue guitar solo.) For the time being, the company will be switching its focus to the more subdued Model S sedan, although we won’t be surprised if we see more badass vehicles from these guys in the future. We aren’t sure it’ll help with the tears, but our Roadster Sport 2.5 test drive will (thankfully) live on forever.

Nevada prepares itself for the imminent rise of driverless cars

Driverless cars are still a way’s away from hitting the mainstream, but when they do, the glorious state of Nevada will be ready for ’em. This week, the state passed a new law that will require its Department of Transportation to “adopt regulations authorizing the operation of autonomous vehicles on highways within the State of Nevada.” More specifically, the DOT will have to cook up a set of safety standards for self-driving vehicles, and designate specific areas in which they can be tested. Invisible drivers immediately hailed the decision as a watershed victory in their ongoing struggle for civil rights.

Ford SYNC AppLink gets rolling in ten new models, still just three apps deep

Ford SYNC AppLink gets rolling in ten new models, still just three apps deep

Back when we gave Ford’s SYNC AppLink a test drive in that little green Fiesta, we got word that the Mustang was next in line to receive the service. Well, earlier this year, the auto outfit Linked-up the Mustang and now it’s rolling out the application for 10 new 2012 models, including the F-150, Fusion (Hybrid and otherwise), Super Duty, and Expedition. It also says it’s got a slew of developers lining up to bring hands-free control of their apps to AppLink. For now, though, no matter which SYNC-enabled beast you boast, or which OS you’re rocking (BlackBerry OS, iOS, or Android), you’ll be riding dirty with just two linked apps at most. Full PR after the break.
