Cydle M7 Android tablet has TV tuner, external monitor capabilities

Cydle’s M7 isn’t the best tablet we’ve seen this year. In fact, it’s hardly even a tablet — it has a built-in stand that allows it to stand at attention in either landscape or portrait mode. When not in use, the stand actually flips around and acts as a screen cover — which is a little comforting when thinking about this soft 7-inch resistive touchscreen bumping against sundry objects in a laptop bag. The Android software on the device right now is ultra beta, so we weren’t able to see the internal ATSC TV tuner in action, but it does set the $199 device apart from some of its slate brethren, though our favorite feature might actually be the simple ability to use this device as an extra PC monitor. You know… it’s the little things in life. Under the hood there’s an ARM11 processor at 800MHz. The M7 should be launching in the Spring, and you can check out some video of the unit after the break if you’re into that sort of thing.

Bookeen debuts Orizon touchscreen e-book reader

Bookeen may have a bit of a tough time getting its new Orizon e-book reader to stand out from the pack of other e-readers here at CES, but it does at least boast quite a few improvements over the company’s previous Cybook Opus. That includes a 6-inch touchscreen display, built-in WiFi, Bluetooth, ePub support, and an accelerometer for portrait or landscape reading. No indication of a release date just yet, but this one should run about $250, and Bookeen still isn’t quite done with the Opus — it’ll soon be available a whole range of colors.

Toshiba Launches Satellite Notebooks With Latest Intel Chips

toshiba
LAS VEGAS — Toshiba this week introduced a high-end notebook powered by the newest Intel chips.

The Satellite A505 is a 16-inch notebook focused on home entertainment. Customers can choose between the Intel Core i3 (2.13GHz dual-core), Core i5 (2.2GHz dual-core) or Core i7 (1.6GHz quad-core) processors.

CES 2010
That’s a lot of numbers, right? What you mostly need to know is the Core i7 is Intel’s high-end mobile chip at the moment, and having a quad-core notebook will be pretty intense. Most premium notebooks last year shipped with dual-core processors, such as Intel’s Core 2 Duo, which is now the previous-generation Intel mobile chip.

The A505 features a high-definition widescreen display and “Resolution+” upconversion software that Toshiba claims will make even standard-definition DVD look more like high-definition. Configurations are available to add a Blu-ray player, an LED backlit keyboard and a slot-loading DVD drive.

The A505 is priced between $770 and $1,250 depending on the options you choose. More specs are as follows:

  • Optional NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M with 1GB DDR3 discrete graphics memory
  • Optional NVIDIA GeForce 310M with 512MB DDR3 discrete graphics memory
  • 6GB DDR3 memory (max 8GB) memory configurations available
  • Premium A/V components and upscale styling
  • Two harman/kardon speakers
  • Dolby Sound Room audio
  • HDMI-CEC output

The Engadget Interview: Erick Tseng, Senior Product Manager of Android

We had a chance to sit down with Erick Tseng, Senior Product Manager of Android at Google, who you may remember from that little press event the big G held the other day. We have a pretty detailed conversation on the impetus behind the Nexus One, details on Google’s long-term strategy for its online store, a deep dive on the device itself, and lots more. We’ve split the chat up into three, easy-to-digest parts, so hit the videos after the break and get the full scoop!

MSI shows off 10-inch Android tablet running new Tegra chipset

Tablet-ed out yet? We didn’t think so. MSI has a 10-inch Android tablet on display at CES here. There aren’t many details (like price, release date and internals), but we do know it’s running one of those new Tegra 2 chips. Up front there’s a pretty nice 10-inch capacitive display, which is plenty responsive. Like other tablets we’ve been seeing, the device is a bit thicker and heavier than we’d like, but hopefully that paves the way for some substantial battery life. We might still not know the “why,” but the “how” is certainly coming together.

iLuv App Station taped down with a cardboard iPhone at CES

We managed to get up close and personal with the iLuv App Station at CES. Sadly, we didn’t get to try it out with a real iPhone, but even then it would’ve been difficult to see if the sound quality’s any good. How about a review unit, iLuv? *wink*

Sony’s camera and camcorder lineup spotted at CES (video)

We swung by Sony‘s gloomy CES booth to check out their new camcorders and cameras for 2010. Fresh on the Handycam menu were the SDHC-loving CX and XR series camcorders (pictured above), and we saw some nice demos of their Optical SteadyShot (mesmerizing video after the break) and wide angle G lens. The tapeless AX2000 professional video camera was also present further down the table, sporting dual memory card slots. On the other table we encountered the Bloggie and the rest of the 2010 Cyber-shot lineup in several colors. Aww, what a sweet family.

ASUS Waveface concept line shown off during our lifetime, might be available after it (video)

ASUS is back at it again with the crazy concept designs, and this time around it’s brought the lustworthy Waveface collection to look pretty behind glass. There are three different concepts in the lineup that aim to redefine computing in almost every way imaginable. First up is the Ultra, which is a wearable computer / mobile phone based around a flexible OLED display and can be controlled through hand gestures in mid air or by touching the display. Next is the Light, which is also based around a folding OLED, but will have some sort of physical keyboard that pops up when folded up into the laptop form factor. Lastly, the Waveface Casa, a television-esque home computer that will also be controlled through gestures in the air. We wish we could show you how said gestures would work — or how any of this would work, really — but these were really nothing more than empty shells filled with displays. Clearly this tech is a far ways off, but it’s good to know that ASUS still has quite the imagination — and hopefully the knowhow to maybe make it real someday.

Google: Nexus One not supporting 802.11n (for the time being)

Contrary to what we saw two days ago (in this boffo teardown as well as on Google’s official spec page) the company is now listing the Nexus One as supporting 802.11b/g and not 802.11n — conforming at least to the specifications on HTC’s official specifications, if not to our hopes and dreams. We’ll let you know if anything changes — again!

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Dell divulges Mini 3 details, tablet (Mini 5?) caught running Android 1.6 (update: video!)

We just got out of Dell‘s mobile roundtable, and despite an extended tangent on China’s phone market, we did manage to get some details on its AT&T-bound Mini 3 and yet-to-be-officially titled “Streak” tablet. Let’s get down to brass tacks here: the Mini 3’s been customized with ActiveSync for our own (corporate) email systems. There is Android market, but for future reference, that’s always going to be up to the carrier. As for naming the 5-inch tablet that’s so far been rumored / codenamed the Streak, the company “might as well call it a Mini” said Dell, perhaps jokingly — Mini 5, anyone? During a quick hands-on we got to check out the keyboard, which was very nice and included a numpad on the right in landscape mode (pictured). We also witnessed someone checking out the system details, and sure enough, this custom skin is running Android 1.6 — no telling if that’s what it’ll ship with, though. There’s also a front-facing camera on the Streak, and much to our delight, capacitive multitouch is alive and well on both devices mentioned here.

As for method of distribution, the company will sell phones via Dell’s online store (in addition to the carrier stores), but whether or not they’ll be unlocked is something the company will “most certainly experiment with that at some point, but that’s not [its] first priority today.”

Update: We’ve got some quick-and-dirty video of the customized Android UI and awesome keyboard — it’s after the break.
