Ceton’s quad CableCARD tuner for Windows Media Center gets a price

Ceton mutli-stream CableCARD tuner

We love Windows Media Center but without access to our favorite HD content it just isn’t that interesting. So obviously we got excited when we first learned that Ceton planned to release a PCI-E card that would allow us to record four HD shows at once with a single CableCARD, but the question has been, how much? Now we knew it’d be cheaper than the $1200 that ATI would charge us for four digital cable tuners but according to Dave Zatz the yet to be announced price is $399. In addition, he has learned that Steve Balmer will demo the card in the big CES keynote Wednesday — which of course we’ll be covering live. This leads us to believe that there might be some other good news for Media Center fans, and since we’re dreamers, we’re hoping for some new Extenders for Media Center.

ASUS NX90Jq hands-on: dual touchpads unite! (update: video)

At long last we can say we’ve experienced a laptop with dual, gargantuan touchpads. The new NX90Jq has squandered a large amount of base real estate on massive, plastic touchpads, and we’re digging it — even if we don’t totally understand it. Of course, if you’ve ever plugged two USB mice into a computer at once, you know exactly how these two pads work in concert, which is to say they don’t. Outside of that we’ve got some real design chops on display, and a nearly disturbing but ultimately pretty impressive mirror back.

Update: There’s video after the break, along with some more extensive impressions.

Samsung Moment being trialed with Mobile DTV

You know the old saying — as LG does, so does Samsung — so it doesn’t come as much of a surprise that Sammy’s swinging in today with a ATSC Mobile DTV announcement following LG’s a few days ago (of course, it helps that both companies worked were actively working on the technology for a couple years, too). There are some interesting parallels here; LG basically transplanted a boob tube tuner into its Lotus, while Samsung elected to take its Android-powered Moment and retrofit the new circuitry. It’s little more than a proof of concept for now, but by the end of the quarter, Sprint and Samsung look to roll out trial units to customers in Baltimore and Washington, DC. Productivity: you’re on notice.

CES 2010: Asus Teases NX90J All-in-One Notebook

picture-6
Two touch pads are better than one! Wait, what?

CES 2010
That’s a main feature on Asus’s quirky NX90J, an all-in-one notebook with a polished aluminum finish, a high-definition 18-inch display, a Core i7 processor, a Blu-ray drive, surround sound and support for dual hard drives among other dreamy features.

Who knows why we would want two touch pads, though. Asus will begin shipping the NX90J in fall 2010. The notebook starts at $2,500.

ASUS NX90Jq is Bang & Olufsen designed, has dual, turntable-like touchpads

It seems ASUS has been spending some time with Bang & Olufsen‘s Chief designer to create a heck of a laptop. There’s no denying this is one sleek looking lappie with a polished aluminum exterior, but it’s got some pretty cool tricks too — including dual touchpads that supposedly gives you a DJ turntable-like experience. The high-def, 18.4-inch display is flanked by B&O ICEpower speakers and is clearly meant to live in your living room. It’s not all looks here, though. It’s got a Core i7 processor, NVIDIA GeForce GT 334M graphics, support for up to 1280GB of storage (with dual drives), a slot-in Blu-ray drive and USB 3.0. We’ve got no idea what this thing is going to cost ya, but we’re hoping to dig up some details and get a hands-on look so stay tuned.

Sony, IMAX & Discovery bringing 24/7 3D home first in 2011

Since it was one of the first to launch 24/7 HD broadcasting with Discovery HD Theater, it only makes sense Discovery is blazing the 3D path, helped along by Sony and IMAX. The bad news? This three way venture won’t be coming home until 2011, well after ESPN kicks off part time broadcasting and, in our opinion, leaving a wide window if a certain Dallas-based billionare wants to launch his own channel — we’re thinking “3DNet” could be a good name. C’mon Mark, you know you want to. Check the PR after the break for details, although there’s no word on which documentaries we’ll be seeing looped day after day (and, if our experience with HD Theater is any indication, will still be amazed by even the 50th time.)

Live from ASUS’s CES press event

We’re here at our very first liveblog of this year’s CES, and who better to start it off than the always imaginative ASUS? We’re expecting a number of highly unrealistic concepts, if prior years are any indication, and of course we’re sure ASUS will have something to say on its favorite subject: netbooks. Stay tuned, we’re due to get underway any moment!

Intel’s CE 3100 finally gets a shipping partner in Yuixx media player

Intel’s CE 3100 multimedia processor has been hanging out at trade floor shows for months upon months now, but at long last the slab has a partner product that’ll be shipping to general consumers. Conceptronics’ Yuixx HD media player has just reached the point in its life where shipment is imminent, and in speaking with the firm, we learned that’ll hit the streets of Amsterdam at the end of this month. The rest of Europe is expected to see it in February, while Americans will have to wait until it hits the FCC in March before getting any closer. Unlike some other set-top boxes on the market now, this one relies heavily on its own Widget Channel to bring web-based content to televisions, and pumping out 1080p material ain’t no thang for it. Head on past the break for the full release and a promo video, and look for a little hands-on action as the CES show floor opens.

LaCie serves up LaCinema Mini HD, Network Server and Wuala-infused USB keys

CES just wouldn’t be CES without a few new introductions from LaCie, now would it? Nah. Up first from the sexiest name in storage is a fresh member of the LaCinema multimedia hard drive family, the Mini HD. Equipped with 802.11n WiFi and a penchant for serving up 1080p video, this DLNA media player boasts an HDMI output, internal hard drive, USB socket (for uploading media or playing files back from a USB drive) and an extensive list of supported codecs that includes MKV, AVC and DivX. This one should be filtering out now in the US and Europe for an undisclosed amount. Moving on, we’ve got the simply titled Network Server, which sports five drive bays, gigabit Ethernet and Windows Home Server running the show. LaCie also enables users to backup their backups via its own Wuala technology, though exact pricing and availability details won’t be revealed until later in Q1. Lastly, there’s a new trio of USB Keys, which look an awful lot like actual keys. Sadly, these aren’t ready to handle the beast that is SuperSpeed USB, but they do promise transfers as fast as 30MB/sec, and they’re also waterproof and available in sizes as large as 32GB. The company’s also throwing in 4GB of web-accessible Wuala storage for the first two years of ownership, with the CooKey and WhizKey available in 4GB, 8GB, 16GB, and 32GB capacities for $19.99 and up, up, up. The full releases are just past the break.
