Panasonic opens up Viera Connect apps to other manufacturers, SDK to devs & gets Hulu Plus

As the connected TV battle continues to heat up, Panasonic is arming its Viera platform by bringing in allies. Dubbed Viera Connect, it builds on the old Viera Cast system by opening up the SDK to developers, and increasing the audience by opening up access to its middleware and market for other device manufacturers. Falling somewhere between Samsung’s more closed Samsung Apps experience and the Google TV approach, Panasonic’s 2011 TVs and Blu-ray players will come out of the gate with apps like MLB.tv., Hulu Plus, NBA Gametime, Asphalt 5, Tetris and more. Even videogame peripheral manufacturer Thrustmaster is getting in the mix with two wireless gamepads. Check the press release for all the details and new apps for this year.

Sony announces six new W, H and T-series Cyber-shot point-and-shoots

Sony’s in full-on product dump mode at the moment, and that naturally includes a whole new range of point-and-shoot Cyber-shot cameras. The DSC-W510 kicks things off on the low-end with a 4x optical zoom and 12 megapixel sensors for $100, while the DSC-W530, DSC-W560, and DSC-W570 each offer some modest upgrades in megapixels and / or zooms and other specs, and top out at a $180 list price. Joining those are the touchscreen-equipped DSC-T110 that will do 720p video for $230, and the DSC-H70 (also $230) that packs a 25mm wide angle lens with a 10x optical zoom. CES 2011: Steve Ballmer Microsoft Keynote

CES 2011 will kick off in style tonight with a keynote from Microsoft head Steve Ballmer. The press conference is customarily one of the biggest events of the entire show. As we have for the past couple of years, Gearlog will be on hand at the show, covering the event live.
So, what do we have to look forward to at the show? Well, if larger trends are any indication, there will be plenty of Windows 7 tablets to show off–hopefully they’ll fare better than that long awaited HP tablet that never surfaced after the buzz of last year’s show.
Ballmer will no doubt be talking up Windows Phone 7. As of late, the company’s new mobile operating system has been posting some fairly respectable numbers. Also, what about that operating system for ARM that we’ve been hearing a good deal about lately?
And Windows 8? Maybe a preview of a forthcoming operating system, though that seems like a bit of wishful thinking.
Whatever the case may be, we will be there, tonight at 6:30 PT/9:30 ET.

T-Mobile G-Slate announced: 4G, Android 3.0, made by LG

T-Mobile and LG have decided not to sit still in the shadow of Motorola and Verizon’s high-powered 4G Honeycomb tablet partnership and have just announced their intention to introduce the T-Mobile G-Slate. Few details are known at present other than those headline-grabbing 4G (or pseudo-4G) capabilities and Android 3.0 operating system. This is probably the exact same tablet that LG is hosting an event for tomorrow. Jump past the break for some video conferencing, browser, and e-reading demos in awesome, fluid, streamable video. Hey, even if you don’t care for either T-Mobile or LG, this is a pretty nice exposition of the Honeycomb interface.

Sony adds three new Bloggie models, including the 1080p Bloggie 3D

Surprised? No, not really, but let’s not rain on Sony’s parade, adding a trio of new models to its lineup of simple to use Bloggie cameras. Most notable is the Bloggie 3D, which does 1080p in 3D through two sensors and has a 2.4-inch 3D LCD — glasses-free. Then there’s the Bloggie Duo, with a 2.7-inch LCD on the back and 2.0-inch on the front, nestled beneath the lens. Finally is the “ultra compact” MHS-FS1, which doesn’t have any fancy tricks. It’s just tiny. We just got some quick hands-on time with the Bloggie 3D at the Sony press conference, and while it wasn’t a real working unit, we can confirm that you will soon be able to put 3D in your pocket. Motorola accessorizes Xoom tablet with docks, cases and keyboards

No tablet is complete without some accessories, and Motorola’s just announced a bunch for its new Xoom tablet. Those include the Speaker HD dock that packs a pair of speakers for hands-free video chats and media viewing, the “Standard Dock” that doubles as stand while it charges the tablet, a new Bluetooth keyboard that’ll also work with your phone and, last but not least, a portfolio case that’s available in both leather and “durable” versions. No word on prices for any of them just yet, but we presume they’ll be released alongside the tablet itself when it rolls out sometime in the first quarter of the year. Motorola launches CLIQ 2 on T-Mobile

Motorola’s CLIQ 2 and its crazy honeycomb sliding keypad just stepped into the limelight at CES and surprise, surprise looks exactly like the pic we saw a couple weeks back. This set packs a 1GHz processor, 5MP shooter, WiFi calling, a hotspot for up to 5 devices, and a 3.7-inch FWVGA (854×480) display. The jury’s out on exactly how that keyboard is going to behave while pounding your digits against it in a messaging frenzy, but a hands-on will sort that real quick. Look for this on T-Mobile shelves on January 19th and in the galleries below right now.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc first hands-on!

The cat is out of the bag, Sony! We just walked into Sony’s CES press conference and look at what we found hanging around in the back? It’s Sony’s Xperia Arc, and it is one slim smartphone. No, like it is really thin and it has a concave back, which reminds us a lot of the Nexus S. According to the placard it has a “Reality Display” with a Mobile BRAVIA Engine. We’re not sure what those fancy words mean, but the display (we’re assuming it is 4.2 inches) is definitely extremely bright and crisp — like AMOLED bright and crisp. We don’t know the exact measurements of the handset, but it looks just as thin as the iPhone… if not thinner. Other than that we know it has an mini-HDMI port and runs Android 2.3 (confirmed on the device itself!). It also has a Sony Exmor R camera. We should be learning much more about this thing as soon as it becomes “official,” but until then hit the break for some hands-on shots.

Update: Ah, finally some confirmed specs. The Arc does in fact have a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, 4.2-inch display, 8.3 megapixel camera, and measures just 8.7mm thick. Hit the break for the full PR and specs.

Motorola Atrix 4G hits AT&T’s website, complete with specs

We’ve already seen it announced an accessorized, and Motorola’s Atrix 4G Android phone has now already turned up on AT&T’s website with all the specs you’ve been waiting for. Those include a Tegra dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM and support for up to 48GB of memory, a 4-inch QHD display (or 960 x 540), a front-facing VGA camera and 5-megapixel with an LED flash ’round back, a 1930 mAh battery that promises nine hours of talk time, fingerprint login security, and Android 2.2 for an OS.
