Sony brings Yahoo! widgets to 1080p ZBR9 / Z-Series HDTVs

No surprise here, but Sony‘s making darn sure it’s not left behind in the connected HDTV arena by introducing seven new sets that all look to the Yahoo! Widget Engine to pull down Amazon Video on Demand, YouTube, Slacker and other web-based content right on one’s HDTV. Proudly dubbed Bravia Internet Widgets, the functionality will come bundled in with the firm’s ZBR9 lineup (comprised of the 52-inch KDL-52XBR9, 46-inch KDL-46XBR, 40-inch KDL-40XBR90 and 32-inch KDL-32XBR9) as well as the 52-inch KDL-52Z5100, 46-inch KDL-46Z5100, and 40-inch KDL-40Z5100. All seven sets tout 1080p panels, BRAVIA Sync, four HDMI inputs, an Ethernet jack and a cute Energy Star 3.0 sticker to boot. Gear up for TV 2.0 (or are we up to 3.0?) to land this Spring.

Sony’s BRAVIA VE5 series brings zero-watt standy, HCFL backlighting

During the run-up to CES, we heard through the grapevine that eco-friendly and well-connected HDTVs were going to be all the rage in early January, and so far, those premonitions are spot on. Sony’s new BRAVIA VE5 line sucks down around 40% less power than many of the company’s other LCD HDTV models, and there are two main developments to thank. First, the 52-inch KDL-52VE5, the 46-inch KDL-46VE5 and the 40-inch KDL-40VE5 all tout a zero-watt standby switch, which — when flipped on — cuts power usage to “nearly zero watts.” Additionally, this Energy Star 3.0-compliant trifecta is the first from Sony to sport the micro-tubular Hot Cathode Fluorescent Lamp (HFCL), and as if that wasn’t enough, there’s even a motion sensor that can turn the set off if no action is sensed and a ambient light sensor for good measure. All greenness aside, each of the three also boasts Motionflow 120Hz technology, a USB port for loading up digital media files, the BRAVIA Engine 2, BRAVIA Sync, four HDMI inputs and 24- True Cinema. Check ’em this summer for currently undisclosed prices; full release is after the break.

Vizio takes the cover off Connected HDTV: Netflix, Blockbuster, Amazon, Yahoo! and more

Netflix streaming is one thing, but Vizio seems to be taking its new status as a premium HDTV manufacturer very well, with the new Connected HDTV platform featuring support for Yahoo! Widgets, Flash, Blockbuster OnDemand (!), Flickr, Pandora, Rhapsody and Accedo Broadband. Due Fall 2009, owners can feel free to go wired or 802.11n style to connect to any of these services in HD, if supported. Clearly missing? Yahoo!, Media Center Extender, but the 2H 2009 fight of Internet-ready televisions is on – set-top boxes better watch their back.

Hands-on with Panasonic’s DMP-B15 portable Blu-ray player at CES 2009

We didn’t have high hopes going into Panny’s press conference today, but the company still managed to unveil a few surprises here in Vegas. One of those shockers was the world’s first portable Blu-ray player, the DMP-. Said device supposedly includes the ability to pump out 1080p content, and while we’re not terribly enthused about the design, we suppose we’ll give it a pass being that’s a world first.

Samsung officially introduces 2233RZ, the 22-inch 3D panel for gamers with two eyes

Samsung officially introduces 2233RZ, the 22-inch 3D panel for gamers with two eyes

3D gaming with flickery goggles is old-school tech that won’t die, and is poised for a big-time comeback this year. Samsung is at the forefront, hoping you’ll go all cross-eyed over its upcoming 2233RZ. The $399 panel, shipping in April, measures 22-inches and sports a healthy 1680 x 1050 resolution, 20,000:1 contrast ratio, 300 nits brightness, and a 120Hz refresh rate. If that sounds familiar it should, as those specs all match the earlier 2233Hz, with the obvious difference being that you can split those cycles across two eyes — 60-per — for some immersive 3D action. Yes, goggles are required, but they’ll be included, as will be compatibility with the new GeForce 3D Vision cards.

Linksys Wireless Home Audio and Media Hub NAS hands-on

We just snuck a quick look at the new Linksys home media gear, the Wireless Home Audio system and Media Hub NAS, and it’s pretty much what you’d expect. For all of Cisco’s talk of platform and back-end and consumer love, the end product is actually pretty humdrum. We can’t speak to the actual setup and content integration — which will naturally be Cisco’s strong suit — but the actual hardware doesn’t seem to scream consumer love. The interface on the Touchscreen Remote is pretty slow and a far cry from the polish of the Sonos system — the unit’s natural competitor — especially compared to the iPod touch control App, and everything looks and feels bulky and gray. We do have to hand it to Cisco for working in the iPod dock, a CD player, iTunes server and Rhapsody all into one cohesive centrally-controlled system, but we’ll see how much traction this gathers in the market… Cisco’s talking like a uniter, but right now this just looks like more fragmentation.

ASUS G50 prototype with additional 4.3-inch Tegra-based PC

We have a few more details on that prototype ASUS laptop we caught on video last night. Essentially two computers in one chassis, the modified M50 sports a separate Tegra APX-based 4.3-inch touchpad PC below they keyboard, for an effect somewhat reminiscent of (but nothing like) good ‘ol SideShow. More than a second display, Tegra’s “system on a chip” architecture allows for lightning fast boot times and excellent picture quality — and since it runs off the same power source as its Atom-based host, the little guy should get up to 12 hours battery life when playing back video.

LG to produce 15-inch OLED panel this summer

LG to produce 15-inch OLED panel this summerHas your $2,500 XEL-1 display already started to show a case of the dimming blues? If so, and if you can go without seeing Cookie Monster in his natural hue for a few more months, you may have another OLED replacement option after this summer. LG is indicating it will begin producing a 15-inch panel in June of this year. No word on whether it’ll match the Sony’s 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio, but it will offer a higher resolution of 1,366 x 768, and LG is pledging a 30,000 hour shelf life. We’ll see about that.

Netgear announces 3G mobile broadband wireless router for 802.11g’s on the go

Netgear didn’t go for any fancy-schmancy new form factor with its 3G mobile broadband wireless router, instead opting for the standard shell we know and love. Nine different Sierra and Novatel 3G modems are currently supported, and just plugging one into the USB 2.0 slot will provide you web access via either ethernet LAN or 802.11g. Usual amenities like WEP / WPA encryption are here, and it includes both AC and 12V DC adapters. The router is due out this month for $130. Anyone up for a World of Warcraft campfire LAN party?
