RIM CEO Thorsten Heins did a fair bit of talking to the media following the company’s latest dose of bad news (in addition to penning his own op-ed), and he’s now gone one step further by responding to some readers’ questions for The Globe & Mail. While there’s expectedly not a whole lot in the way of surprises, he did talk a bit more about the reasons for the BlackBerry 10 delay, noting that he “could still see some of the seams,” and appears to have ruled out any further delays, saying that he is “absolutely committed” to the new timeline. He’s also assured folks that the company will continue to support BlackBerry 7 devices “into the future,” but reiterated that upgrading those devices to BB10 was out of the question. Those of us yearning to bring Huawei’s Ascend D Quad on summer vacation will have to file that dream away for next year. The company’s consumer division chief, Yu Chengdong, has pushed back the phone’s volume production from this month to August. Blame for the setback rests squarely on that custom-developed K3V2 processor — there have been “technical problems” getting it ready, if we go by Huawei’s less than precise explanation. The timing certainly isn’t what we’d call ideal: now that the Galaxy S III and One X are both common features of the smartphone landscape, the Ascend D Quad’s performance won’t be turning nearly as many heads when it arrives. We’ll have to make do with the solid Ascend P1 in the meantime.

Well, we hope you weren’t expecting to have PlayBook 2.0 up and running on your BlackBerry tablet any time soon, cause it’s been officially delayed till at least February. Word has come straight from the mouth (well, keyboard) of David Smith, senior vice president for the PlayBook project. In a blog post Smith announced that RIM would be holding back on the release to ensure many of the new features, including native email and enterprise app deployment, work as advertised. The OS update will be getting a decently long beta test, with it rolling out to some in the Early Adopter Program “shortly.” Sadly, it seems that some features have fallen by the wayside with the focus on polish — namely, BBM. Since the messaging service relies on a one-device per-PIN model, getting it on the tablet has proved troublesome. For now users will have to rely on BlackBerry Bridge and their RIM handsets to get their BBM fix. Considering the company’s track record, we wouldn’t be shocked if the OS update slips even further into the future — remember an email client was promised within 60 days of launch… that was back in April.

Sony has just postponed the launch of its new NEX-7 mirrorless camera, due to widespread flooding in Thailand. According to the manufacturer, the flooding has impacted operations at two of its three factories within the country, thereby delaying production of both the NEX-7 and Alpha A65. Reuters is reporting that one camera plant has been completely flooded, while operations at a semiconductor factory have been suspended due to supply shortages. The NEX-7 was originally scheduled to hit the market next month, though Sony now says it has been delayed indefinitely. “It is difficult for us to say at this time when production will re-start in Thailand,” spokesman George Boyd told the BBC. “However, we are taking measures to move production to our third factory in Thailand which is operational and also to other sites.”
