RIM’s Thorsten Heins answers Globe & Mail readers’ questions, is ‘absolutely committed’ to new timeline

RIM CEO Thorsten Heins did a fair bit of talking to the media following the company’s latest dose of bad news (in addition to penning his own op-ed), and he’s now gone one step further by responding to some readers’ questions for The Globe & Mail. While there’s expectedly not a whole lot in the way of surprises, he did talk a bit more about the reasons for the BlackBerry 10 delay, noting that he “could still see some of the seams,” and appears to have ruled out any further delays, saying that he is “absolutely committed” to the new timeline. He’s also assured folks that the company will continue to support BlackBerry 7 devices “into the future,” but reiterated that upgrading those devices to BB10 was out of the question. You can find all of his answers (10 of them) at the source link below.

RIM: QWERTY BlackBerry 10 phone launches in ‘close proximity’ to its all-touch cousin

Thorsten Heins at BlackBerry World

RIM hasn’t had much good news to offer along with its glum fiscal first quarter, but it has given a reason to mark early 2013 on the calendar if you’re a BlackBerry fan. CEO Thorsten Heins revealed during the results call that the first QWERTY BlackBerry 10 phone will arrive in “close proximity” to its touchscreen-only counterpart. What that entails is still very much under wraps, although there were clues. Heins stressed that the early batch would focus on the “premium” space, while BlackBerry 7 would hold down the entry and mid-range markets until their BlackBerry 10 replacements were ready. The tidbits won’t provide much comfort to someone who has to decide on a phone by the holidays, but they hint that the truly patient could be rewarded for their calm under pressure.

Huawei pushes Ascend D Quad production to August, pins it on processor hiccups

Huawei Ascend D Quad hands-on

Those of us yearning to bring Huawei’s Ascend D Quad on summer vacation will have to file that dream away for next year. The company’s consumer division chief, Yu Chengdong, has pushed back the phone’s volume production from this month to August. Blame for the setback rests squarely on that custom-developed K3V2 processor — there have been “technical problems” getting it ready, if we go by Huawei’s less than precise explanation. The timing certainly isn’t what we’d call ideal: now that the Galaxy S III and One X are both common features of the smartphone landscape, the Ascend D Quad’s performance won’t be turning nearly as many heads when it arrives. We’ll have to make do with the solid Ascend P1 in the meantime.

ASUS delays Transformer Prime’s release until WiFi fix is found (update: Prime to be released the week of 12/19)

If you were hoping to get you hands on a Transformer Prime this month, prepare to be disappointed. After hearing rumors of the ASUS slate’s delay due to Wifi issues, we’ve now received confirmation from ASUS Canada via one of our tipsters. The company says that “the WiFi range on the TF201 did not meet our quality standards” and that it will not release the product until the wireless is up to snuff. In order to combat the issue, ASUS “will be implementing a new solution,” though it declined to elaborate on what the solution would be. Naturally, no timetable for the Transformer Prime’s release was provided either. So, if you jumped on the pre-order, let us know if you’ve heard the same song and dance from ASUS in the comments below.

[Thanks, George]

Update: We heard back from ASUS US and were told the Prime is still scheduled for release the week of 12 / 19.

RIM confirms PlayBook OS 2.0 delayed until February, still no BBM in sight

BlackBerry PlayBook

Well, we hope you weren’t expecting to have PlayBook 2.0 up and running on your BlackBerry tablet any time soon, cause it’s been officially delayed till at least February. Word has come straight from the mouth (well, keyboard) of David Smith, senior vice president for the PlayBook project. In a blog post Smith announced that RIM would be holding back on the release to ensure many of the new features, including native email and enterprise app deployment, work as advertised. The OS update will be getting a decently long beta test, with it rolling out to some in the Early Adopter Program “shortly.” Sadly, it seems that some features have fallen by the wayside with the focus on polish — namely, BBM. Since the messaging service relies on a one-device per-PIN model, getting it on the tablet has proved troublesome. For now users will have to rely on BlackBerry Bridge and their RIM handsets to get their BBM fix. Considering the company’s track record, we wouldn’t be shocked if the OS update slips even further into the future — remember an email client was promised within 60 days of launch… that was back in April.

Fisker Karma gets EPA-certified 52MPGe, sales ready to begin

It hasn’t had the smoothest birth, nor the cheapest, but Fisker can apparently start selling Karmas for real this time. The tantalizing plug-in hybrid that first wowed us nearly four years ago has just cleared US government testing, the final hurdle holding back deliveries. So, how did it fare after being brutalized by the EPA? Not as well as the company had hoped, as the 52MPGe and 32 miles of electric range fell short of the respective 67.2 and 50 figures the company had previously been touting. Not a huge drop, like another plug-in EV we know, yet probably less than you’d been hoping for something that costs over $90,000. And, when you do run out of juice, you’ll be looking at just 20MPG while puttering around on gasoline. Actual customer deliveries are scheduled in the following weeks, but until then take a joy ride in one of 39 Karmas being rolled out to dealers.

Thailand flooding forces Sony to postpone Alpha NEX-7 release, curb A65 production

Sony has just postponed the launch of its new NEX-7 mirrorless camera, due to widespread flooding in Thailand. According to the manufacturer, the flooding has impacted operations at two of its three factories within the country, thereby delaying production of both the NEX-7 and Alpha A65. Reuters is reporting that one camera plant has been completely flooded, while operations at a semiconductor factory have been suspended due to supply shortages. The NEX-7 was originally scheduled to hit the market next month, though Sony now says it has been delayed indefinitely. “It is difficult for us to say at this time when production will re-start in Thailand,” spokesman George Boyd told the BBC. “However, we are taking measures to move production to our third factory in Thailand which is operational and also to other sites.”

iPhone 4S welcomed by AT&T activation delays, iCloud stumbles out of the gate

If you’ve unboxed a shiny new iPhone 4S from AT&T today, you’ve most likely had an experience similar to many others who made the same purchase: frustration. It seems that the surge in activity from the release of Apple’s new handset has reduced activation traffic on Ma Bell’s network to a crawl. This isn’t the first time the carrier has had issues on launch day — but back then, it didn’t have any competition. Now that Verizon and Sprint have joined the iPhone party, the pressure’s on and AT&T’s not looking good compared to the other carriers who don’t appear to be having issues. As if that weren’t enough for the folks in Cupertino, iCloud had a rocky debut this week as well — from absent verification emails to an inability to backup data. Apple has documented all five of the new service’s foibles via the coverage link below, but it appears everything’s been peachy since early this morning. So, have you been waiting for your new iPhone to be more than a shiny new paperweight? Leave a comment, and let us know.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Verizon sending Xoom docks back with delayed, updated slates

Still bummed about the delay in getting your Xoom back from its trip to the shop? Well, it appears Verizon may be looking to smooth things over with those who have been waiting the longest. One of our readers let us know, that because they were “among the first” to send off for the 4G LTE / Honeycomb 3.2.2 upgrade, the carrier sent back a Standard Dock (worth $50) along with the juiced up slate. Is it enough to make up for the extra wait time? That depends on your Xoom addiction — but we have to admit, it’s a pretty nice gesture from ol’ Big Red.

[Thanks, Nazir]

Update: We’re hearing from many of you that the Dock was part of the original update process while supplies lasted. You can still consider yourself somewhat lucky if you were quick enough got one.

Update 2: We’ve gotten official word from Motorola that, while it wasn’t part of the original upgrade plan, the company is offering Standard Docks as a goodwill gesture due to the delay in the update being released. Also, Moto let us know that it’s not upgrading the device otherwise — only a thorough cleaning and new lens protector application. So if your slate is sporting new digs, you might want to go buy a lottery ticket.

Motorola Xoom a bit slow boomerangin’ back with 4G LTE update

Consider yourself lucky if you sent off your Motorola Xoom for the 4G LTE upgrade and got it back in about a week, as promised. It seems that Motorola Mobility is now having some trouble holding up their end of the bargain on the quick turnaround. In a note to eager, empty-handed slate faithful, the company informed those waiting that it’s experiencing delays and will let customers know when their device finally ships. Surprised that an upgrade that requires you to actually mail in your tablet isn’t being returned “on time?” Yeah, neither are we.
