iMac rumor mill suggests new models could be coming next week

This one is obviously still very much in rumor territory, but a couple of separate reports have cropped up today that suggest Apple could be set to debut some updated iMacs as soon as next week. That includes a report from 9 to 5 Mac that iMac orders are being delayed until May 2nd, despite the fact that they’re still listed as shipping within 24 hours on Apple’s website, and a separate confirmation from a trusted source of the site, who says that Apple will stop shipping iMacs to retailers this week in advance of next week’s supposed release. That’s further backed up by a report from Mac Rumors, which cites another source who says that Apple will be changing the promotional materials in its retail stores for a launch on Tuesday, May 3rd. Details are comparatively light on the rumored new iMacs themselves, but the safe money seems to be on Sandy Bridge processors and Thunderbolt ports.

Motorola delays Droid Bionic launch until summer to make ‘several enhancements’

There’s not a lot of details on this one, but the Wall Street Journal has just confirmed with Motorola that the launch of the Droid Bionic will be delayed until summer, and that it might not be available for purchase until sometime in the third quarter (or late summer, in other words). As for the reason for the delay, a Motorola spokesperson would only say that the company is “incorporating several enhancements to make this an even better consumer experience,” based on feedback its received since the phone was announced way back at CES in January.

ASUS apologizes for Eee Pad Transformer delay it won’t detail, US launch pegged for end of April

Well, as far as delays go, this is looking like one that ASUS is willing to accept. As the company explains on its Facebook page, demand for the Eee Pad Transformer has apparently been so high that the first few batches have sold out “much quicker’ than it had planned. That’s left the global launch for the Honeycomb tablet a bit up in the air, with the company only directing folks to its Facebook pages for individual countries for more information, although they unfortunately aren’t providing much in the way of details at the moment.

That delay apparently won’t affect the US launch, though — at least not to any significant degree. According to the upstart website JoannaStern.com, the Transformer will be hitting the US by the end of this month with a price tag of $399, while the keyboard dock will run you $149. Could we possibly be seeing the beginnings of a tablet price war? Here’s hoping.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Neo delayed to Q3, Arc and Play facing limited supply due to Japanese quake

There hasn’t been much good news coming out of Japan lately and this sadly keeps up with the unhappy trend. Sony Ericsson has officially bumped the broad launch (it’s already available in limited quantities) of its Xperia Neo handset to at least July, explaining the delay as the result of “supply chain disruptions.” Additionally, the Xperia Arc and Play devices, two other members of the company’s new Android Gingerbread family, will be available in smaller volume than expected, at least for the near term. We guess that might go some way to explaining why the Xperia Play failed to reach some UK carriers in time for its April 1st launch date. Skip past the break for a statement from Sony Ericsson, who promises to be more explicit about the situation when it delivers its latest quarterly results on April 19th.

Samsung refutes talk of Galaxy S II delays, promises April launch in at least some places

So yesterday we learned that Samsung’s planning to speed up the dual-core Exynos processor inside its Galaxy S II to 1.2GHz, but there was also word that the handset may suffer a setback in terms of release date. Today, the company has tweeted out a two-part notice assuring us that that will not be the case and things are proceeding “as planned.” April will see the first retail appearance of the 8.5mm-thick Android phone, though Samsung does advise that “it will be gradually rolled out in each market according to the local launch timetable.” That sounds to us like whatever April availability we get will be in the highest priority markets and / or limited in quantity, but we’ll take whatever we can get.

Samsung Galaxy S II gets upgraded to 1.2GHz, delayed until May or June?

Well, it looks like there’s some good news and some bad news for those holding out for a Samsung Galaxy S II. GSM Arena is reporting that Samsung has decided to upgrade the phone’s dual-core processor from 1GHz to 1.2GHz, something that was first revealed on Samsung Estonia’s Facebook page and has apparently be confirmed by GSM Arena itself from an “internal source.” The bad news is that it seems you’ll also have to deal with a bit of a delay. Some UK retailers are now listing a release date of May 6th, while Samsung India has tweeted that the phone’s global launch has been delayed by “at least” a month, and that it won’t roll out before June.

P.S. There’s no indication as to how this upgrade will affect the Tegra 2 version of the phone, which was confirmed to be on track last month.

Dell’s 10-inch Windows 7 tablet staying hidden until fall

Dell’s Rosemount tablet is similar to the HP Slate in that it’s a 10-inch, business-centric Windows 7 tablet whose launch has been bumped back further than originally expected. To be clear, this isn’t an explicit delay, since Dell has never given official indication for when in 2011 it’ll launch the slate device, but a leaked tablet roadmap back in February suggested it would be with us in the warm and breezy days of June. Now, Forbes is reporting insider info that states the Rosemount won’t be hitting shops until fall, September at the earliest, meaning it’ll miss the back-to-school sales period but arrive with plenty of time for the holiday shopping rush. Let’s hope all this time taken leads to a finger-friendly software overlay for Windows 7 — we love the OS’ multivariate functionality but it was never designed for control with the imprecision of fleshy digits.

Sony CEO casually mentions he’s supplying cameras to Apple

We were tempted to call it an April Fools’ joke, but it seems the story’s true: Sony CEO Sir Howard Stringer reportedly let slip that his company is producing cameras for the next batch of iPhones and iPads during a public interview with the Wall Street Journal. Traditionally, Apple’s sourced its sensors from OmniVision, including the delightfully backside-illuminated 5 megapixel CMOS unit you’ll find in the iPhone 4, but since Sony too has BSI tech and OmniVision has reportedly encountered delays, your next portable Apple product might house a Sony Exmor R sensor like the one we admired on the Xperia Arc. Mind you, that may not end up actually happening, because of the context in which Sir Howard revealed the news — according to 9 to 5 Mac, he said that the factory producing sensors for Apple was affected by the Japanese tsunami. Oh well.

Sonos Controller for Android delayed until April, heartbreak available now

Is it really the end of March? That’s debatable, but if you’ve been wondering where Sonos’ Controller for Android app is, well… wonder no more. Rather than cutting it loose within the next week (as promised earlier in the year), the outfit’s vice president of quality has informed the world that it won’t be available until next month. The exact quote?

“We know you’re anxiously awaiting the Sonos Controller for Android. Unfortunately, testing the app is taking a bit longer than we anticipated. The latest addition to our free controller line-up won’t arrive until April, but when it does, it is going to rock.”

But will it rock as much as the image above? Time will tell, friends.

Xperia Play delayed by O2 UK due to software bugs, what are the other carriers doing?

Oh, woe is us. Or, to be more precise, woe is us if we wanted the Xperia Play on the UK’s O2 network on the day of its release, April 1st. The British carrier has been candid in admitting it found software bugs on the Play and is holding back release of the gamer-friendly device until those have been ironed out. We appreciate its effort in “testing the phone non-stop for weeks” and its reluctance to grab a quick buck by releasing imperfectly baked goods, but a major question remains — if this isn’t an O2-specific software problem, and we’ve heard no peep of O2 customizing the Android 2.3 build on the Play, why are no other carriers signaling a similar delay? Vodafone is still aiming to deliver UK pre-orders by April 5th and there seems to be no indication of flawed software from others. Only thing we can think of, given that O2 has the white Xperia Play exclusive, is that the white phone curse has struck again.

Update: Here’s what Sony Ericsson has to say on the matter:

“Sony Ericsson Xperia[TM] PLAY will be launching on 1st April across all UK mobile operator partners except for O2, who have decided to prolong the testing period in order to ensure that the software meets the requirements of its procedures. Sony Ericsson will be workingwith O2 over the next couple of weeks to expedite the process and ensure that O2 customers can soon join consumers across the UK in being able to enjoy the world’s first PlayStation certified smartphone.”
