AT&T’s First Android Phones: Five From Motorola, Dell and HTC

AT&T’s first Android phones are official. A set of five from Motorola, Dell and HTC.

• A Motorola smartphone, powered by MOTOBLUR, with a unique form factor and an AT&T exclusive
• Dell’s first smartphone, based on the Android platform and an AT&T exclusive
• A HTC smartphone, based on the Android platform, and an AT&T exclusive

Motorola’s is up top, which is gonna be a MotoBlur phone. It’ll be first out the gate, apparently. HTC’s phones, plural, are going to be revealed later, not today, though they’re all coming out in the first half of this year, so within the next couple of months. Dell’s is going to be the Mini 3, which is also a new class of phone, a “nice phone”:

This was inevitable. But the real question, after yesterday’s Nexus One event: Will they be superphones? [ AT&T, AT&T]

Dell’s Atom N450-based Inspiron Mini 10 now up for order, starts at $299

Fitting, no? Dell (briefly) launched its Inspiron Mini 10 at a press event last year at CES, and this year’s show is ushering in the next major iteration. ‘Course, it’s not like we didn’t know it was on the way, but if it’s details you crave, you’ll leave this post duly satisfied. Starting today, the revised Inspiron Mini 10 is up for order at Dell’s US website, and the options list is fairly impressive (particularly for a netbook). The device sports a 92 percent full-size keyboard, the same “hinge-forward” design seen on the company’s ultrathin Adamo and a bevy of extras including a 9.5 hour battery, Broadcom’s Crystal HD media accelerator, built-in GPS and an integrated HDTV receiver. There’s also a good chance a version will be made available with a Mobile DTV tuner within, though that’s just speculation based on the fact that this machine is currently being used in a trial program in the nation’s capital. Hit the source link to start customizing your own — the base price is pegged at just $299.

Dell and Microsoft Join in on (PRODUCT)RED

This article was written on January 24, 2008 by CyberNet.

Microsoft and Dell have just announced that they are teaming up to join in on (PRODUCT)RED.  As many of you probably already know, it is an initiative started by U2’s Bono and another man, Bobby Shriver, and the purpose is to raise money for the global fund to fight AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria.   Several other companies like Apple, Gap, and American Express have already been participating for quite some time since the project launched two years ago. Dell has three different editions of their XPS line that are part of  the project, and each come with a special version of Windows Vista Ultimate (PRODUCT)RED. Depending on the computer you purchase, Microsoft and Dell will contribute a total $50-$80, enough to purchase a 4-6 month treatment for one person living with AIDS in Africa.

The three computers that you can choose from include:

  • Dell XPS M1330 (PRODUCT)RED (13.3″ HD Widescreen laptop) – Starting Price is $1,149
  • Dell XPS M1530 (PRODUCT)RED (15.4″ HD Widescreen laptop) – Starting Price is $1,149
  • Dell XPS One (PRODUCT)RED (All-in-one desktop) – Starting Price $1,599

There’s also a Dell 948 All-in-one (PRODUCT)RED Printer which they’re selling for $99.

This new version of Windows Vista Ultimate does include a few things you won’t find with any other version of Windows that set it apart, and thankfully, it won’t cost you any extra:

  • 6 Wallpapers
  • 2 Sidebar Gadgets
  • 1 Screensaver
  • 1 DreamScene movie

And of course all of the included “extras” are focused around red.  The screenshot below shows you what the desktop will look like, and I must say, it does look pretty cool.

Dell, Toshiba and Gateway Core i3 laptops get revealed early, joined by Pine Trail netbooks

And just like that, the CES 2010 on-switch has been well and truly pressed. After HP, Sony and Lenovo all exposed their hardware to the world prematurely, it was inevitable that other companies would “accidentally” follow suit. Thanks to CNET‘s snooping, we’re now staring at a trio of new Core i3 models from Dell, Toshiba and Gateway — highlighted by an unannounced ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470 powering a 1600 x 900 15-inch display on the Gateway, which also squeezes 500GB of storage under a shockingly low $692 price tag. On the Atom front, the Mini 210 is joined by a Toshiba NB305 — sporting the N450, 250GB HDD, up to 11 hours’ claimed battery life, and a $438 sticker — as well as Gateway’s effort with a smaller 160GB HDD but also suitably reduced $285 asking price. Dell netbook modded into a rather large handset (video)

Eager to get a hold on your very own Dell-branded Android smartphone? This guy here took matters into his own hands with nothing more than his modding skill, his imagination, and a Dell Inspiron Mini. Of course, this thing won’t exactly fit in most pockets, but as a curiosity (and a conversation starter) it performs admirably. Have you ever seen a 10.1-inch novelty handset in action? Now’s your chance — peep the video for yourself after the break.

Dell Pulls Ads From MTVs Jersey Shore

dell jersey shore.jpg

It’s the day before we all break for the Christmas holiday, and what better way to celebrate than to discuss MTV’s “Jersey Shore”? The show – which follows seven tanned and hair-sprayed individuals in a “Real World”-esque home on the Jersey Shore, has been a topic of conversation in the halls of PCMag a few times, but alas, there was no tech angle.

Until now. TMZ reports that Dell is now the third sponsor to pull their ads from the TV show. “Jersey Shore” has drawn fire from Italian-American groups, as well as those representing the beaches of NJ, for what they considered to be a deragatory depiction of the region and its people.

Dell asked MTV to block its ad from airing during “Jersey Shore” because they don’t “condone or support ethnic bashing in any form,” TMZ said.

American Family Insurance and Dominos Pizza have also removed their ads.

‘The Situation’ was unavailable for comment.

Dell Mini 9 suffers meltdown, scorches owner’s floor

While this isn’t quite bad enough to merit a “dude, your Dell is on fire” part deux, it’s a pretty frightful example of the hazard modern batteries (of any kind) represent. A Consumerist reader reports that her year-old Dell Mini 9 recently popped, “hissed and sizzled” as it filled her room with smoke and tarnished her fine wooden flooring. Judging from the fallout pictures (available after the break), we’d say the culprit for this Mini fire (oh!) was the battery pack, which again reminds us how badly we need to improve our energy storage technologies. Dell has been quick to remedy the situation with an upgraded laptop being sent over to the young lady and the melted machine packed off to the labs for inspection, though there’s no mention of compensation for the owner’s scarred floor and mind.

Motorola Droid and Dell Adamo latest to get Gorilla glass

Corning’s darn-near-impenetrable Gorilla glass certainly isn’t new — in fact, we spied it in a few of Motion Computing’s tablets just a few months ago — but it’s still not commonplace on mainstream gizmos. Yet. SmartPlanet sat down with Dr. Donnell Walton, senior applications engineer at Corning, in order to discuss the merits of the display technology as well as its importance in the gadget space. The discussion also mentioned that both Motorola’s Droid and Dell’s Adamo (not to mention Cowon’s S9 PMP) are sporting the glass, which acts to make displays “damage-resistant.” Not surprisingly, the company is seeing huge demand in the smartphone arena, where touchscreen-centric phones are being shoved into pockets at random and then costing manufacturers big bucks as return rates creep up. It’s a pretty interesting read if you’re into that type of thing, and yes, we did just give you permission to try and split your Droid display wide open in a moment of frustration. Just don’t count on Motorola to accept that as a valid excuse for your RMA.

[Thanks, Jeff]

Dell pulls ads from Jersey Shore, calls show ‘derogatony’ (video)

Its seems that casual TV viewers and large corporations handle Schadenfreude very differently. While MTV’s Jersey Shore has been a constant source of amusement for at least one Engadget editor, TMZ (our other favorite tech site) reports that Dell has joined a growing list of advertisers that are backing away from the reality series. In fact, a company spokesman (with a less jaded view of humanity than us) has gone on record stating that Dell doesn’t “condone or support ethnic bashing in any form.” And neither do we, of course — but we do love a good laugh. Jenni “Jwoww” Farley is unavailable for comment.

Broadcom’s Crystal HD tech to liven up HD capabilities of N450-based netbooks

NVIDIA’s Ion technology may be hogging the limelight when it comes to netbook graphics, but Broadcom’s no stranger to the space. After giving Acer’s Aspire One HD playback capabilities that it could only dream of just months prior, the company’s newly announced Crystal HD platform could provide Intel’s Atom N450 with the multimedia boost it badly needs. The nitty-gritty details are still being withheld, but we’re told that “top-tier OEMs including Asus, Dell and Samsung” will be slapping this into their upcoming N450-based netbooks. If you’re curious as to why you should care, the BCM70015 promises “near flawless” HD video playback, including support for Flash Player 10.1 and Blu-ray flicks. We’re told to expect it to start popping up in forthcoming machines throughout 2010, and if you’re looking to soak up anything else in the meanwhile, a promotional video awaits you after the break.
