Dell XPS 15z available in Australia and Asia, fits Sandy Bridge in under an inch of thickness

The XPS 15z, true to Michael Dell’s word, is now with us. Provided “now” is May the 24th in whatever part of the world you happen to live in. Laptop shoppers in Australia, Japan, Hong Kong, and Taiwan — a group of nations already enjoying the glories of Tuesday — can now buy the 0.97 inches-thick 15z for prices starting at just under A$1,400. That buys you a Core i5-2410M from Intel (2.3GHz default speed, 2.9GHz with Turbo Boost), a generous 6GB of DDR3 RAM, backlit keyboard, GeForce GT 525M graphics with 2GB of dedicated memory, a 750GB hard drive, and a 64WHr battery. The screen spans 15.6 inches diagonally and offers 1920 x 1080 resolution. Stepping up to A$1,700 gets you a Core i7-2620M (2.7GHz default, 3.4GHz TB) and 8GB of RAM. Juicy specs, we must admit. Now when’s midnight coming?

[Thanks, John]

Dell XPS 15z coming tomorrow for $999? (updated)

The thinnest 15-inch laptop “on the planet” is coming tomorrow, costing a measly $999, according to the Wall Street Journal. In a profile of Dell’s recent history and forthcoming plans in the consumer electronics market, the financial paper twice makes reference to an ultrathin, $999 laptop that is set to launch on Tuesday of this week. Pairing that intel with the abundance of leaks surrounding the slinky 15.6-inch XPS 15z — including a Michael Dell tweet promising it’s “coming soon” — leads us to the conclusion that we’ve finally gotten ahold of the price and date for Dell’s next big thing. Interestingly enough, the WSJ article goes on to say that Dell had canned a similar set of slim laptops earlier in the year, which might give us greater hope for the quality of the 15z — it survived where others didn’t.

Other disclosures in the piece include a quote from Michael Dell, saying that he “didn’t completely see” the tablet boom coming, which might explain why sales of his company’s Streak tablets have been low enough to be described as “immaterial.” There’s also a discussion of the abortive Zing music service and related MP3 players that never were, but you’ll have to hit the source link to learn more about them.

Update: As further evidence of the 15z’s imminent release, the tease has turned into a show with a video that fully reveals its slimline chassis and declares that the new Dell packs the Streak’s Stage UI as well. [Thanks, Ishai and Ming Han]

Update 2: And now we have the answer to our headline question: yes.

Android Honeycomb has hidden Gingerbread interface, enabled by higher LCD density

Google’s already indicated that tablets and smartphones won’t be sharing the same Android build until Ice Cream Sandwich in Q4, though interestingly enough, it turns out that the tablet-friendly Honeycomb actually has Gingerbread’s interface quietly tucked underneath. According to modder Graffix0214, all you need for making the jump is one simple tweak in a system file: assuming you already have root access, use your preferred method — Pocketables recommends the LCDDensity for Root app — to change the LCD density value to 170 or higher to emulate a smaller, denser display. After a reboot, you should then see some Gingerbread love as demoed by Graffix0214’s video after the break; and likewise, set the value to 160 or lower to roll back. It sure is nice to have an option, eh?

Microsoft offers free Xbox 360 with back-to-school PC, professors shake their gray, uncool heads

With only the best interests of its younger customers at heart, Microsoft has a new back-to-school promotion: starting May 22, college students buying a new Windows 7 PC can also get a free Xbox 360 4GB console. That’s right, free — as long as your new computer cost at least $699 and came from Redmond or one of its partners, including HP and Dell. Online ordering will require a .edu email address, which even attendees of the School of Life know how to procure; if you’d rather shop at Best Buy or a Microsoft Store, you’ll need an actual student ID. This isn’t about convincing students they need more than a tablet computer, of course. It’s about about giving them the opportunity to be popular. “Get ready to be the coolest kid on your dorm floor with a killer new Windows 7 PC and an Xbox 360 — all you really need for college,” the company says. Yes, being the coolest kid on your dorm floor: pretty much the definition of Higher Education.

Dell Streak Pro Honeycomb tablet pictured, likely to be with us in June

Android Honeycomb OS, 10-inch screen size with 1280 x 800 resolution, and NVIDIA’s Tegra 2 (T20) chip on the inside. If those specs sound familiar, it’s because most manufacturers already have a tablet just like Dell’s upcoming Streak Pro. This slate from Round Rock got us a little hot under the collar recently, when it appeared it would ship with the T25 Tegra 2 silicon — which runs at 1.2GHz and offers 3D support — but nope, it’s same old, same old from Michael and company. Still, the Streak Pro will apparently come will a brushed aluminum back, 16GB, 32GB, or 64GB storage options, dual mics, dual cameras (2 megapixel on the front, 5 megapixel ’round back), and a choice of four colors: blue, pink, black, and red. If that’s not enough customization for you, Dell’s also adding its Stage UI atop Android, while support for AT&T’s LTE network is also said to be under consideration. You can see some of the new tablet’s accessories at the source link below, which also advises us to expect the Streak to go Pro in June, as previously anticipated.

NVIDIA driver page outs 3D Vision support for Dell XPS 15z, surprises no one

Michael Dell may aim to tease, but NVIDIA is just giving it away: a recent driver update lists Dell’s upcoming XPS 15z laptop as one of several snagging 3D Vision 3DTV Play, scoring prospective buyers 3D gaming via NVIDIA-supported 3DTVs. Little surprise here, considering the 15z’s predecessor rocked a GeForce GT 540M (also 3DTV Play supported), which we’ll note, falls under this driver update. Although we’re still short on official hardware specs, we won’t be shocked if the 15z has the graphical chops to handle Duke Nukem Forever, Portal 2, or any of the other 3D Vision games whose profiles were added in the update. Now, the real question: would the Dell dude approve?

[Thanks, Tigrux]

Dell teases lithe new laptop to stimulate our gadget senses (update: CEO says XPS 15z)

Mmmm, there’s nothing like some shots of a slim new PC to get our gadget senses all tingly, and Dell’s done just that via a new video. Posted on its Facebook page today, Round Rock’s latest laptop — which likely claims XPS lineage — is looking lean and clean, with a couple of USB 3.0 ports and lattice-work speaker grilles. There’s not much more to say, so we’ll let the vid speak for itself. Enjoy.

Update: Michael Dell did it again! We just caught the CEO tweeting “Dell XPS 15z Coming soon!” and linking to the same video after the break. Looks like someone doesn’t get the idea behind teasers. To be fair, though, you can actually see the moniker at about 8 seconds into the clip.

By Popular Request: Dell Brings Back Windows XP

This article was written on April 19, 2007 by CyberNet.

Dell Windows XP

The first result from the Dell IdeaStorm site has finally been implemented, but it doesn’t have to do with Linux. In fact, it has to do with another operating system…Windows XP. Just when you thought that Dell had completely phased Windows XP out they have now started to bring it back for consumers.

I remember checking out the Dell site shortly after Vista launched and noticed that they had switched everything over to Vista. A few weeks later they decided to bring back Windows XP for business users, but still had Vista as the only option for home users. As a result of the IdeaStorm site Windows XP has been added back onto the following computers:

When visiting those pages you’ll see a quick comparison chart (pictured above) between Windows Vista and XP…with Vista taking the cake. The systems all include Windows XP Home Edition with an optional upgrade to XP Professional for $149.

I am happy to see Dell listing to the feedback of their users, but they are definitely trying not to promote Windows XP. To choose from Windows XP systems you either need to use the direct links above, or on some of the Dell pages you’ll see a small link in the sidebar that says “Still looking for Windows XP?” that you can click. I thought that they could just add XP to the list of operating systems to choose from when customizing a computer, but apparently they didn’t want to do that? The only reason I know of why they did that is because they didn’t want someone inadvertently choosing XP just to find out later that their new computer didn’t come with the latest operating system.
