AT&T Stores to Stock Netbooks?

According to a recent online survey conducted by a market research firm, AT&T is at least considering carrying netbooks in their stores.

Survey materials tease not only a wide variety of netbook models at AT&T, but 30-minute in-store consultation for those who may need a tutorial to get up and running. While AT&T is already in the netbook-subsidy business, the company has relied upon third parties like RadioShack to sell the hardware and service. Now it looks like AT&T is gearing up to geek out on their own accord. [Thanks tipster!]

Are You in Love with the Dell Adamo? Sign Up

Dell%20adamo%20model.JPGAre you in love with the Dell Adamo luxury notebook? Really in love? Maybe, crazy in love?

If so, then you need to click on over to the dedicated “Adamo By Dell” Web site the PC maker has set up, complete with arty panning shots of models like the one to the left, none of which seem to actually inspire love.

If you do sign up, you’ll have the chance to receive updates and apparently score yourself an Adamo, which is due to be released in the first half of 2009. (Note: I mean “buy”. To my knowledge, Dell isn’t running a contest for a free Adamo.)

A YouTube walkthrough of the Adamo is here.

Study finds horrible working conditions at Microsoft, Dell ODM factory

Despite the fact that the world economy is suffering from cutbacks in nearly every job sector, factory workers in places such as the Meitai factory in Dongguan City, Guangdong, China — which assembles and produces keyboards for companies including Lenovo, Microsoft, Dell, HP and IBM — have been relatively insulated from the downturn, and their jobs secure. The National Labor Committee has conducted a covert operation to investigate the working conditions at the factory, however, and found them to be less than acceptable. The workers — who arguably are not compensated very well to begin with — are cheated out of wages for negligible wrongdoing, forced into overtime, fed food that even a Dickens character would refuse, work twelve hours a day seven days a week, and sleep in dorms which are “primitive” (yes, workers live at the factory). The report that the NLC has compiled is quite long, detailed, depressing, and begins, ironically, with a Bill Gates quote. Hit the read link for the full story.

Update: It looks like the source material at the read links is only working intermittently.

Hands-on with Dell’s Latitude XT2 tablet

Official word just arrived this morning of Dell’s Latitude XT sucessor, the Latitude XT2, and Laptop Magazine‘s already spent some quality time with the tablet. They note the XT2’s aesthetic similarity to the previous model, but point out a few standout upgrades, most notably the 12.1-inch LED backlit capacitive touch-screen, which they say is significantly brighter than the last iteration, and the up to 1.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo ULV SU9400 CPU (with a Montevina chipset). They also point out that the finger navigations are “smooth as butter” — but hit the read link for full details and video of the tablet in action. The Latitude XT2 is going to have a starting price of $2,399.

Dell’s Mini 10 launching on or around February 27th?

We’d be highly skeptical of this one (in fact, we actually are highly skeptical), but we’ve seen a Dell rep or two speak the truth before. To that end, we figured it prudent to pass along Sir Paul Synnott’s recent chat with an online Dell UK representative. Upon asking for more details on the future release of the Mini 10 netbook — you know, that machine that was unveiled at CES and then promptly forgotten? — he was amazingly hit back with a definitive ship date: February 27th. He was also told that the power adapter would be a “smaller one, as with the Mini 9,” and that pricing was yet to be determined. We know, it reeks of fish, but the date itself doesn’t sound all that outlandish. Guess we’ll just have to wait and see, eh?

Dells Multi-Touch Tablet, With Video

Dell’s Multi-Touch tablet announced earlier this morning, touting its semi-new, two-fingered gestures that are destined to be compared to those of the Apple iPhone 3G. Though it’s purely a marketing video, there might be something here tablet users can look forward to. Here’s hoping that all these gestures are as intuitive as the real thing.

Dell Latitude XT2 multi-touch tablet with 11-hour battery now official (starts at $2,399)

The machine translation is pretty weak, but Dell’s 12.1-inch (1,280 x 800 pixel) Latitude XT2 looks to have just made its first tentative steps in a global launch. The video posted after the break comes courtesy of Korean site, AVING, where the convertible tablet was apparently just released. Pinch to zoom and two-fingers swipes… yup, it’s in there. 11-hours of battery (6-cell plus battery slice) and DDR3 memory (max of 5GB!) too in a chassis just 2.5-cm (0.98-inches) thick. Click through for the video while we track down the official specifications that already seem to be aligning with the unofficial specs leaked earlier.

Update: Official Dell Japan press release now out. We’ve got specs:

  • up to 1.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo ULV SU9400 processor with Montevina chipset
  • Intel integrated GMA 4500MHD graphics
  • Windows Vista Ultimate on down
  • 12.1-inch LED backlit capacitive touch-screen with EM Digitizer pen
  • up to 5GB of DDR3 1066MHz (1x1GB, 1x4GB DIMM)
  • up to 120GB 5400RPM SATA disk or 128GB SSD
  • 802.11a/g/n WiFi and gigabit Ethernet
  • SATA ODD
  • 3.78-pounds (1.72-kg) with 6-cell battery
  • eSATA, 2x USB 2.0, firewire, and ExpressCard 54 slot

Update 2: Just announced for US with prices starting at $2,399.

Hark! Dell Mini 12 kitted with an SSD

Like a proclamation from On High come the words: “Rejoice! No longer do you have to put up with a slow Dell Mini 12!” The kids over at Portable Monkey have taken a good look at Mtron’s 1.8-inch SSD (the inelegantly named MSD-PATA3018032-ZIF2 is going for ¥26,800 — about $294) and not surprisingly, the thing has far out-classed the Mini 12’s default 4200rpm HDD in benchmarks. On the other hand, the drive does draw a considerable bit of power, so battery life may be an issue — and at a height of 8 millimeters (as opposed to 5 millimeters for the standard drive) some folks have had a hard time installing the thing. Are you the type of person who gets giddy at the prospect of souping up your hardware? We thought so. Hit the read link for all the juicy deets.
