Student moves quadriplegics with Wiimote wheelchair control (video)

There were certainly a couple whiz kids at Intel’s International Science and Engineering Fair this year, but high school senior John Hinckel’s a regular MacGyver: he built a wheelchair remote control out of a couple sheets of transparent plastic, four sliding furniture rails and some string. A Nintendo Wiimote goes in your hat and tells the whole system what to do — simply tilt your head in any direction, and accelerometer readings are sent over Bluetooth. The receiving laptop activates microcontrollers, directing servo motors to pull the strings, and acrylic gates push the joystick accordingly to steer your vehicle. We tried on the headset for ourselves and came away fairly impressed — it’s no mind control, but for $534 in parts, it just might do. Apparently, we weren’t the only ones who thought so, as patents are pending, and a manufacturer of wheelchair control systems has already expressed interest in commercializing the idea. High school senior builds walking robot, the VSR-2: Talos FG (video)

These days, you don’t have to be a whiz kid to build robots in your basement: off-the-shelf microcontrollers, Arduino boards and Lego Mindstorms can take care of the hard work. Adam Halverson, however, is the real deal — he built his first robot at the age of twelve, and after six years of failed attempts, he’s crafted a full-size humanoid that can walk. Filed with pistons, servos and an assimilated laptop, the VSR-2:Talos FG cost the South Dakota high school senior $10,000 to build with fellow student Anthony Winterton; he claims he could reconstruct it for half now that he’s done. The hulking metal machine won him an all-expenses-paid trip to the 2010 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in San Jose, where he’s competing for up to $75,000 in prize money. We’ll be watching to see if he recoups his investment — awards will be announced this afternoon. Update: The awards are in, and though Talos FG’s grippers didn’t manage to pull down that $75,000 grand prize, they did manage to net Halverson $5,500 in cash and savings bonds from Intel, the Cade Museum Foundation and the U.S. Army.

Cellbots get Nexus One upgrade, ad-hoc motion control (video)

Sprint and Verizon may have shunned the Nexus One, but that doesn’t mean the handsets can’t be put to good use: these Android-controlled, Arduino-powered Cellbots now feature the one true Googlephone as the CPU. At Intel’s 2010 International Science and Engineering Fair in San Jose, we got our hot little hands on the DIY truckbots for the first time, and found to our surprise they’d been imbued with accelerometer-based motion control. Grabbing a Nexus One off a nearby table, we simply tilted the handset forward, back, left and right to make the Cellbot wheel about accordingly, bumping playfully into neighbors and streaming live video the whole time. We were told the first handset wirelessly relayed instructions to the second using Google Chat, after which point a Python script determined the bot’s compass facing and activated Arduino-rigged motors via Bluetooth, but the real takeaway here is that robots never fail to amuse. Nimbus 64: the latest in a long line of gorgeous portable N64 mods

For whatever reason, the last great game console to utilize a cartridge over a disc is finding itself in yet another portable form factor, and of course, the Nimbus 64 has been crafted by one of Ben Heck‘s most loyal followers. One cndowning is responsible for this beaut, and it’s actually his second homemade portable; this particular miniaturized Nintendo 64 uses a custom vacuum formed case, D-pads and control sticks from used Game Cube controllers, a Zenith PS1 display and plenty of nuts and bolts that only the hardcore modders in attendance would understand. Homemade 16TB NAS dwarfs the competition with insane build quality (video)

From the man that brought you the OS Xbox Pro and the Cinematograph HD comes… a cockpit canopy filled with hard drives? Not quite. Meet the Black Dwarf, a custom network-attached-storage device from the mind of video editor Will Urbina, packing 16TB of RAID 5 magnetic media and a 1.66GHz Atom N270 CPU into a completely hand-built Lexan, aluminum and steel enclosure. Urbina says the Dwarf writes at 88MB per second and reads at a fantastic 266MB per second, making the shuttlecraft-shaped 12.7TB array nearly as speedy as an SSD but with massive capacity and some redundancy to boot. As usual, the DIY guru shot a professional time-lapse video of his entire build process, and this one’s not to be missed — it showcases some pretty spiffy camerawork as well as the man’s welding skills. Northeastern University students build web-syncing, home-automating DPAC alarm clock

It may not actually be available for sale, but it looks like some students from Northeastern University are giving devices like the Chumby and Sony Dash a run for their money. They’ve built this so-called Dynamically Programmable Alarm Clock, or DPAC, which can sync up with your Google Calendar to automatically set alarms, get traffic, weather and other information, and even integrate with a home automation system to turn on the lights, open the blinds, and start your coffee maker as part of a wake-up cycle. What’s more, the whole thing can also be configured using a web interface, and it of course packs a built-in FM radio and an iPod dock for good measure. How to create your own Micro SIM card using a chef knife and some scissors


We told you you could shave down your old and busted SIM cards and turn them into minty fresh Micro SIMs, didn’t we? An industrious Londoner by the name of John Benson has gone and proven that concept with the help of some cutting implements and an original Micro SIM to use as a reference. His saintly patience resulted in his being able to negotiate the Vodafone SIM you see above into his iPad 3G (imported from the USA) and riding the waves of Voda’s network as if Apple never decided to encumber its portable device with a silly new standard. The 3FF (Micro) SIMs and the bulkier original ones are electrically identical, so there’s no threat of harm by using them interchangeably, though we can’t say the same thing about the tools that get you there. As always, we advise trying to rope someone else into doing the work for you — less chance of hurting yourself that way. Hit the source for more.

Video: Awesome Dad Builds Focus-Pulling Shoulder-Mount for DSLR

Jonathan Clifford Bergqvist is a pretty cool guy. When he decided that he needed a shoulder-mounted rig for shooting video with his Canon 7D, he decided it should be home-made, and fashioned from wood. But his dad, Erik, is flat-out awesome: Not only did he build the rig from scratch (and we mean from scratch – he starts off with a tree-branch with the bark still on it), he added a pretty intricate focus-pulling mechanism. Check the video of Erik in action:

Yes, the shoulder rig is impressive. The beautifully turned handles contrast with the precision-machined focussing apparatus, but the real star is Jonathan’s dad. I could watch videos of craftsmen like this at work all day long. MkII is already planned: The hose-clamp is tricky to get onto the lens, so that will be changed for an as-yet undecided replacement, and Jonathan has the cheek to complain that the rig “does not fold.” Just do us one favor, Jonathan: When your dad makes another one of these things, remember to post the video.

We have to admit we have an affinity for finely hand-crafted gadget accessories — be they iPad cases or PC chassis — and we’re especially impressed when they add some unique functionality to match their looks, like this wooden DSLR shoulder mount built by Jonathan Clifford Berqvist and his father Erik. In addition to being built from a single tree branch, the rig packs a nifty follow focus mechanism that lets you adjust the focus with just a twist of the handle. While there’s unfortunately no step-by-step plans for building your own, it certainly seems to be straightforward enough for anyone with some basic woodworking skills, and you can get a glimpse of the build process in the video after the break.

iPad merges with kitchen cabinet, sacrificing portability for utility

From the moment we saw the so-called “magical device,” we knew the lucrative digital cookbook market would never be quite the same, but it’s one thing to imagine an iPad as the centerpiece of one’s kitchen, and something else entirely to see to see it in the flesh. TUAW reader Alan Daly built his directly into the side of a kitchen cabinet, and set it to work doling out Epicurious recipes, streaming Jamie Oliver, and surfing some of the world’s best websites (in our oh-so-humble opinion) well out of the way of troublesome meat splatter. In lieu of flying toasters, his screen displays a virtual aquarium when it’s not in use, and the whole assembly seems to be a simple matter of cutting a hole and affixing a pair of wooden strips for support. It’s not clear, however, how he keeps it charged. Maybe that’s the magic Steve keeps talking about. Video after the break.
