Seagate FreeAgent Theater+ HD media player gains Netflix streaming

Seagate’s FreeAgent Theater+ HD media player has quite a few competitors surrounding it, and for the most part, it didn’t really offer a huge competitive advantage when we peeked it back in September. ‘Course, that’s before support for Netflix‘s Watch Instantly came along, and today, the tables seem to have turned. The aforesaid storage outfit has announced that a gratis firmware update will enable this here player to stream Netflix as well as content from YouTube, vTuner and Mediafly. For those just now willing to give this unit a second look, it also doubles as a UPnP / DLNA streamer to play content stored on networked PCs and drives, and it can procured for right around $100 sans a FreeAgent HDD. So, Roku — you just going to sit there and take this, or what?

Nokia phones will still Come with Music, only stores see rebranding

If you live in India, our story was correct — your mobile subscription music service will be called “Ovi,” and no longer carry the weight of the cumbersome Comes with Music branding — but we’re hearing that in other Nokia territories, including the UK, that’s not quite the case. Nokia UK told Pocket-lint that while the company’s online music store will indeed be renamed “Ovi Music” across all 22 territories this year, the Comes with Music service is here (and there) to stay. To tell you the truth, though, we’re not that interested in the fate of a brand name. We’d prefer if Nokia made a more ballsy move — like discontinuing their service’s most controversial feature, Comes with DRM.

Nokia Ovi Music store slowly shedding its DRM shackles globally

While not widely touted, Nokia’s Ovi Music store is on track to make Nokia’s music catalog DRM-free globally. This was first mentioned in December at Nokia’s Capital Market Days event. Keep in mind that we’re talking about Nokia’s a la carte music download service, not its all you can eat Comes with Music offering that lets you keep all the tracks you can download in the first year but locks them to a single Nokia handset and PC for life. Russia’s Ovi Music store was the first to go DRM-free back in November while adding single sign-on with other Ovi services during the revamp process. Now we’re hearing that India has quietly joined suit with its Nokia Music store becoming the DRM-free Ovi Music incarnation. Nokia is apparently focusing on growth markets first on its way to more western markets but it’s a good sign that its fair use debilitating DRM is on the way out — a good thing for consumers and a change, like free Ovi Maps, that makes Nokia handsets just a bit more attractive.

Nokia updates N97 with free Ovi Maps, just as promised

It was only a week ago when Nokia shook us with its free turn-by-turn navigation update, but the poor old N97 got left out in the cold. Not any more though, folks! In fact, the new Ovi Maps for N97 was delivered one day earlier than promised, and can be found “through the software update client in the device.” Thanks, Nokia, but don’t forget your N900 fans, too.

[Thanks, @old_no_7uk]

XBMC 9.11 ‘Camelot’ now available for download, huge changelog in tow

Frankly, we haven’t heard much noise coming from the XBMC camp in quite some time. All that changes today, as the project has just launched its latest major update in v9.11. The so-called Camelot build is now available for download on Windows, OS X and Linux, with the most notable changes including a revamped user interface, DirectX support by default in Windows, a “complete reorganization of the settings menus, automatic video information extraction, and smoother video playback.” You’ll also find updated scrapers, expanded remote control support and updated codecs. Tap that source link for the download and condensed changelog — though, we should caution you that the live installer seems to be causing issues for some, so try and stay positive, okay?

Update: We’ve been informed that a live-repack has been released, so those install issues should be long gone.

Nook fails to communicate, download purchased ebooks

You didn’t think the whole Nook saga was over, did you? After just succeeding in delivering devices to expectant pre-orderers in time for Christmas, Barnes and Noble is today cleaning up yet another mess courtesy of its ill-prepared content servers. Judging by customer feedback on its support forums, it appears a glut of download requests over gift-giving day jammed the B&N net pipes and left a great many disappointed Nook users. All attempts at downloading an ebook yesterday — even by those who got their Nook a little earlier in the month — were greeted with a “Queued: Will complete shortly” message, which apparently remained that way until early this morning when downloading finally resumed functioning. The biggest perceived failure here, though, is the book retailer’s silence on the issue, which illustrates the importance of communicating with your customers — most people seemed tolerant of the setback once they realised they didn’t have faulty hardware.

[Thanks to all who sent this in]

Jolicloud pre-beta now available to download, walkthrough now available for viewing

Let’s face it: Chrome OS has been snagging all of the attention in the OS world here lately, but let us not forget about Jolicloud. The Linux-based system, which was designed to be installed onto existing netbooks without much of a fuss, has finally reached its public pre-beta stage. In other words, the 600MB .exe file is now out for you and yours to download and try, and according to our good pals over at Download Squad, it’s well worth the effort. They seemed to have no issues whatsoever installing it as a second OS on their machine, and they went ahead and deemed it superior to Chrome OS’ earliest build due to its ability to support “both native and web-based applications equally well.” Their own tests found it to boot in just 15 seconds on an Eee PC netbook, but if you’re still curious if dipping your toes is the best move, hop on past the break for a lengthy walkthrough video.

Creative ZEN X-Fi2 sees its first firmware update, still has aways to go

Just weeks after going on sale here in America, Creative’s underwhelming ZEN X-Fi2 portable media player is already seeing its first firmware update. If you’ll recall, we found the unit darn near unusable back at IFA, and even now it’s being panned for forcing users to mash the screen too often and wait too long for things to happen. Reportedly, the 1.10.04 update solves those responsiveness issues, and it also brings about colored icons (yeah, seriously), accelerometer usage (but only for photos), a Sudoku game and a “press and hold” behavior for powering the unit on or off. The most interesting aspect here (in our humble opinions) is the Sudoku bit, as it certainly hints at more titles being possible in future firmware refreshes. Hit the Read link to get that download going, and hop on past the break if you need any video convincing.
