Nintendo Wii Vitality Sensor still coming to a hand near you, says Iwata

For a product with the word “vitality” in its name, Nintendo’s forthcoming Wii peripheral doesn’t seem to have much of a pulse these days. The oddball controller certainly piqued our interest when the gaming giant showed it off way back in 2009, but aside from some false alarms and an uncovered patent application, we haven’t heard a peep. Nintendo president Satoru Iwata addressed the Vitality Sensor’s conspicuous absence during a financial presentation, chalking the delay up to “differences in biological information in humans.” The peripheral is still coming, according to Iwata, but it won’t be released until the company can make it work well with 99 percent of consumers — a tall order indeed. And what about the other one percent? Well, perhaps they can try these on for size.

Nintendo Confirms: The Wii’s Successor to be Unveiled at E3

nintendo_wii_white.jpg

A few weeks ago, rumors flew that the Nintendo Wii would get a price cut, and the following week retailers cut the price themselves in what seemed to be a response to the rumors. Now we actually know what was going on: Nintendo has confirmed that at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in June, they’ll take the wraps off of their next generation gaming console.
No real details about the console have been revealed other than that we’ll see it at E3, but many people are already calling it the Wii 2 or the Wii HD, noting the fact that Nintendo is the only gaming company in the market at the moment with a console that doesn’t support HD video. Nintendo said the new console will hit store shelves in 2012.

Time will tell whether the rumors of HD video, controllers with LCD displays in them, and other rumors all come true, but one thing is clear: if you want a Nintendo Wii and don’t have one, now’s a good time to find a bargain on one, regardless of what E3 brings.

Nintendo confirms next Wii coming in 2012, will preview it at E3

Nintendo has just announced it plans to introduce a successor to its Wii console next year, a “playable model” of which will be shown off at the E3 gaming expo in Los Angeles coming up on June 7th. No details are available as to how the next Wii will improve on the first one, though we imagine Nintendo will be happy if it simply matches the success of its current-gen home entertainer — the brief note publicizing the new roadmap also comes with a total of Wii sales accumulated between its launch in ’06 and the end of last month: 86.01 million. That’s said to be on a “consolidated shipment basis,” so maybe Nintendo is mixing its definitions of sales and shipments the way Sony likes to, but it’s a mighty big number either way. Bring on E3, we say!

Update: Bloomberg has provided the first official hint about Nintendo’s next console with a quote from company President Satoru Iwata. Nintendo will “propose a new approach to home video game consoles,” though it won’t be a simple move to 3D, as Iwata notes “it’s difficult to make 3-D images a key feature, because 3-D televisions haven’t obtained wide acceptance yet.” Given that motion gaming is no longer new and 3D is off the table until 3DTVs go mainstream, we’re now left facing only one potentiality — Nintendo is planning on bringing genuine innovation to our living rooms. We suppose it also adds fuel to the rumor of a crazy next-gen controller to go with this next-gen console.

Next generation Wii controller to feature 6.2-inch display, turn living room into giant DS?

E3 is getting close, just two months away now. As such the next-gen Wii console rumors have heated to a boil. One of the most interesting bits of tattle originates from Kotaku. The gaming site’s sources claim (with impressive specificity) that the new 8-button controller features a screen pushing a whopping 6.2 inches, two analog sticks, and a camera. The new Wii console (sometimes called the Wii 2, Wii HD, or simply “Project Cafe”) is said to support the new controller in addition to Wii Remote-style controllers for backward compatibility with existing Wii games — at the moment, however, it’s not clear if that implies support for existing Wiimotes. But why the giant display? Here’s Kotaku‘s take:

The 6.2-inch screen will receive data wirelessly from the Nintendo console and presents an array of options, from putting the player’s inventory or map on the controller screen, to allowing players to combine it with the controller’s camera to snap photos that could be imported into a game or even turning it into some sort of glorified viewfinder (we’re unclear about whether the camera on the controller points at the player or can be outward-facing; we’ve heard both – maybe it swivels?).

In other words, you can think of the new contoller-plus-console combination as a modern Dreamcast system or “glorified mega-DS,” as Kotaku puts it, where the TV is the top screen and the handheld controller is the lower touchscreen. If true then we’ll likely hear the official first word at E3 which kicks off on June 7th.

Update: IGN has its own set of “sources” confirming many of these details. Could this be a Nintendo rumor that pans out, for once? We should know in just over a month.

Panasonic confirms pricing, ship dates for 2011 LCD TV models

Even while its newest plasmas are starting to show up on store shelves Panasonic so far is only issuing a press release with pricing and availability for its 2011 LCD HDTVs so far, confirming much of the retailer info leaked to HDGuru recently. While the 37- and 32-inch DT30 (pictured above) will both ship in April for $1,299 and $1,199, respectively and include the newly upgraded Viera Connect (now with Hulu Plus) smart TV platform, 3D features and more, some of the lower end lines like the E3 and X30 series will make do with a stripped-down Easy IPTV package featuring just the basics — Netflix, Amazon VOD, Napster, Pandora, Facebook and CinemaNow. Check the full release after the break for all the details, we’ll just be waiting around for the big boy VT and GT plasma TVs to make landfall in the coming weeks assuming the rest of the early info holds true.

Volvo crashes C30 EV so you don’t have to, doesn’t spill a drop of battery juice

Try as it might to act hip and young, Volvo is still a company that’s associated with the name “safety,” and that’s really not a bad thing. Demonstrations like this help to reinforce that, with the company taking great pride in its C30 EV holding up as well as it did in a crash. It was subjected to a 40mph offset and, while it’s looking mighty deranged, no portions of the electric drivetrain were compromised. In other words: no battery goo leaked and no first responders would have been zapped. If that’s all a little too ghastly for you, fear not: there are plenty of pictures of a beautiful E30 with nary a body panel askew, including a peek into its trunk, which doesn’t appear to have been nearly as negatively affected as the poor Focus Electric.

More details emerge of supposed PSP2 with backside touch controls, HD screen, hot personality

More details emerge of supposed PSP2 with backside touch controls, HD screen, hot personality

About a month before this year’s Tokyo Game Show we started hearing new reports of the PSP2, a device that’s been rumored since roughly the dawn of time (which could explain the prehistoric creatures on the concept render above). These rumors, however, were different, specifically the mention of a touchpad on the back of the device. Alas that device didn’t make an appearance to the press at TGS, but supposedly Sony was showing it off to some developers. Kotaku has learned a few more things, most notable being a display an inch larger than the current PSP’s and having a high-def resolution — a detail that should surprise none. According to the report Sony is still tweaking the internal hardware, trying to mitigate overheating issues ahead of a release sometime in the fall of 2011. That would likely mean an unveiling at the 2011 E3, the same place the original unit was first shown in the flesh eight whole years earlier.

DJ Hero 2 now available for purchase, Beck still wondering about royalty checks

You seriously can’t make this stuff up — in what can only be assumed is a nod to the one and only Beck, Activision actually is shipping two turntables and a microphone with DJ Hero 2. And that bundle is finally on sale starting today. We’d heard earlier in the year that the company was aiming for a fall release, and sure enough, consumers can get their holiday shopping started early by heading to Best Buy (where they’ll receive a hard-shell turntable carrying case), Walmart (where the original DJ Hero will be thrown in gratis when buying the DJ Hero 2 Party Bundle on Wii or Xbox 360) or Amazon (where Linkin Park’s A Thousand Suns will be oh-so-graciously tossed in for no charge). Check it right now for $59.99 (software only) to $149.99 (the full monty).

Nintendo unlikely to significantly alter 3DS design before release

In an interview from this year’s E3 that’s only just been published, Nintendo 3DS platform producer Hideo Konno says that the upcoming handheld is in its “final shape.” Reggie Fils-Aime, the company’s leading North American voice, has more recently told us that, au contraire, the E3 consoles are not the final design, though parsing the two into one coherent message would suggest that Nintendo’s just leaving itself room to make small changes if the need arises. Konno’s chat with Wired also touches on the 3DS’ screen size, with him suggesting the glasses-free stereoscopic effect could be taken all the way to the size of a TV but requires the user to be in a very precise position, which is what makes it unfeasible. Teased about potentially making a 3DS XL, the veteran game guru says Nintendo’s sticking with the current form factor for portability’s sake, but he clearly isn’t closing the door on the idea if and when 3DS sales begin to wane. There’s a lot more here, including discussion of the new handheld’s analog nub and MotionPlus-like gyro and accelerator combo, so why not show the source link some love?

Nintendo ‘not satisfied’ with online efforts, but no big changes in store

Le sigh. For years now, Nintendo‘s online efforts have quite clearly lagged behind those of Sony and Microsoft, both of which have placed a priority on nailing online multiplayer and making it part of the draw for prospective buyers. Xbox LIVE is a entire universe of online goodies, and it’s the exception rather than the rule to see a major title launch on the 360 sans online play; in many ways, Sony sings a similar tune. Nintendo, meanwhile, seems to keep online play on the back burner, occasionally throwing it in where it’s easy enough to add but never really going out of its way to make sure the latest AAA title will allow Bobby and Jacky to play from across the street. During an investors meeting last week at E3, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata confessed that he’s “not currently satisfied with the online efforts that we have made so far,” and that the Big N is “working at ways to improve those.” In an episode of corporate double-speak to end all corporate double-speak, he followed up with this gem: “On the other hand, I do not think that online functionality is something that we should be devoting resources to for every single product.” Seriously, Iwata? You can’t think of a single reason why the next installment of Balls of Fury could benefit from online support? For shame.
