Last week we mentioned the Firefox Companion for eBay that had just been announced, and at the time it wasn’t yet open for the alpha test program. Recently we were able to download the extension and give it a try. After playing around with it for the last 20 minutes, I wouldn’t say it’s something an occasional eBay user would use, but more for those who either sell, purchase, or watch items frequently.
After installing the Firefox extension, the first thing you’ll want to do is set-up your account. You can choose whether or not you want Firefox Companion for eBay to automatically connect when Firefox starts or not. To get the most use out of this, you’ll probably want to select yes to this option.
The companion shows up in the left toolbar, and then there’s a drop-down menu at the top of that toolbar where you can select what you’d like to view: ended, active, bidding, watching, or selling items. I chose to view the items that have ended that I was either watching or selling. The screenshot below (click to enlarge) shows what this looks like.
You’re given many options to choose from, and there are separate options for watching, bidding, and selling. You can either choose to receive an alert box, or the item will glow in your sidebar.
For example, if you’re watching an item, you can get an alert when it’s going to end soon so that you can determine if you want to bid on it. Other options include an alert or “glow” if you’ve been out-bid on an item, won an item, or lost. If you’re selling, you can select the option so that items will glow when they’re ending soon.
Up at the top of your browser, you’ll notice that there are quick links so that you can easily navigate to important eBay pages likes “My eBay, eBay Homepage, Provide Feedback,” etc.
eBay is no stranger to scams, particularly those involving passwords. To help with this, there’s built in password protection (pictured below). All you have to do is enter in the password that you use for eBay and PayPal, and you’ll get warned if you begin to enter your password into a site that hasn’t been verified.
As of now, it’s available for eBay.com, eBay.co/uk, ebay.fr, and eBay.de, and I’m sure they’ll be adding other sites soon.
I think this could be a great way to promote eBay, but especially Firefox because some of the non-Firefox users may want to get in on what this has to offer.
If you want to sign up for The Alpha test program, click here.

eCRATER: An eBay Alternative
Posted in: Today's Chili, Web SitesThis article was written on February 10, 2008 by CyberNet.
There have been several changes at eBay over the last week that haven’t made their users happy. First there was the announcement that they were lowing their listing fees but raising the final value fee, and then there was the announcement that sellers will no longer be able to leave negative feedback. As a result, there’s a group of people who are working on organizing a boycott of eBay for the week of February 18th through the 25th. They say that it means absolutely no buying, selling, or searching. With this boycott and the simple fact that people are upset over the changes, users are looking for eBay alternatives. A few days ago, CyberNet Reader Michael Dobrofsky asked about alternatives and we mentioned eCRATER. It’s one alternative worth taking a look at, and today we’ll be briefly explaining what they’re all about.
So what is eCRATER? Well, they describe themselves as a free web store builder and a free online marketplace. They say that sellers can create their own online store in a short time for free while buyers can shop for all kinds of products. Additionally, they’ve teamed with Google as an eCommerce partner to allow buyers and sellers to use Google Checkout for payments. They’ve been around since late 2004 and have been growing since then. Certainly they’re not as big as eBay, but that’s to their advantage. They’re definitely one of the places buyers and sellers turn to when they eventually determine they’ve had enough with eBay and their constant rising fees.
I haven’t used the site yet, but I just did several searches for different products and their selection seems to be good. The overall main theme I noticed on the site is simplicity. Everything is simple from setting up a store to a listing. Searching for “Apple iPhone” yielded 202 different results which isn’t bad at all. Of course I did come across a few fraudulent appearing listings (one said they only took Money Gram as a form of payment, big red flag there!), but I don’t think you’ll be able to stay away from fraud no matter where you go.
If you’re a seller on eBay and you’ve just about had enough, why don’t you checkout eCRATER and other sites like it? And for buyers, the next time you need something, instead of going to eBay right away, why don’t you checkout alternatives like eCRATER. There are options out there, it’s just a matter of finding and using them. Like I said, I haven’t used the site yet to vouch for it, but it is definitely a site I will be checking in the future when I need something. If you’ve used them, be sure to let us know how your experience was.

A few days ago we wrote about Firefox Companion for eBay, which at the time was in the private alpha stage. They’ve moved along into a public beta, so now you can try it out for yourself. It’s really only worth it if you’re experienced with eBay and use them on a regular/semi-regular basis.
The download site will automatically recognize if you are using Firefox, and if you are you’ll just download the companion for eBay. If not, you’ll have a link to “download Firefox eBay edition” which includes Firefox 2.
Just to recap some of the best features, there are alerts for just about anything you could think of: when an item is ending, when you’ve been outbid, when an item of yours has sold, etc. They also took safe browsing into consideration and after you enter in your eBay and PayPal passwords in the “options” section, if you were to go to a site that wasn’t verified and started to enter those passwords, you’ll get a warning.
Give it a try– it’s a beta edition of course, so you may come across a bug or two. If you buy or sell on eBay this will be a great companion because you’ll always be up to date with what’s going on, without ever having to go to the eBay site.

Prototype MacBook Pro repair parts returned to owner, 3G antenna stays in Cook’s kitchen
Posted in: Apple, macbook pro, MacbookPro, prototype, Today's ChiliWondering what happened to that prototype 3G MacBook Pro Apple had pulled off eBay? Not too long ago, the boys in Cupertino reclaimed the specimen, along with a handful of spare parts the would-be auctioneer used to get the rig back into working order. After relinquishing of the prototype to Apple security in early September, previous owner Carl Frega petitioned the firm to return the repair parts to him. Last week, Frega finally received an unmarked FedEx package containing a notebook battery, hard drive, and two sticks of RAM. Despite the repossession, CNET reports that the outfit never gave Frega proof that the machine legally belonged to Apple, although he did say that the hardware and serial number were authentic. For more on the MacBook’s journey through Craigslist, small claims court and its 15 minutes of eBay fame, hit the second CNET link below.

HP pays $10.4 billion for controlling interest in Autonomy, which will remain autonomous

VoodooPC. 3Com. And, perhaps most notoriously, Palm. The list of HP acquisitions grows by one today, with the purchase of UK information-software maker Autonomy, long a target of former HP chief Léo Apotheker. Apotheker, you may recall, was just ousted in favor of former eBay CEO Meg Whitman. The deal began during Apotheker’s tenure and went through with HP paying just about $10.4 billion for a controlling percentage of Autonomy stock. The UK firm will remain a separate unit, with Whitman saying, “Autonomy significantly increases our capabilities to manage and extract meaning from that data to drive insight, foresight and better decision making.” Something tells us she’s not the only one hoping for some better decision making. For full details on HP’s latest buy, check the source link.

HP names Meg Whitman new President and CEO, gives Leo Apotheker the boot
Posted in: breaking news, hewlett-packard, HewlettPackard, HP, Today's ChiliWell, after less than a year on the job as HP’s top dog Leo Apotheker is out, and former eBay CEO and one time candidate for California governor Meg Whitman is in. The move was hardly unexpected, but it very quickly evolved from quiet mumblings and rumors to full-fledged fact this afternoon. It was initially expected that Whitman would only be stepping in as an interim solution — just another person passing through the revolving door at the entrance to the CEO’s office. But, Whitman, a current board member, is in for the long haul. She’s stepping in at a crucial and somewhat difficult time for the company that has seen its stock price plummet 47 percent, its $1.2 billion mobile OS flounder and is considering spinning off its PC business. She is no stranger to controversy (simply refer to her short tenure with Goldman Sachs) and was an integral part in growing eBay from a startup with just a couple of dozen staff members to one of the most popular destinations on the internet — so, at least she’s accustomed to having a few curve balls thrown her way.
In a statement, Whitman said, “I am honored and excited to lead HP. I believe HP matters – it matters to Silicon Valley, California, the country and the world.” The company also announced today that Ray Lane is moving from a non-executive chairman role to executive chairman of the board of directors, and that the board intends to appoint a lead independent director “promptly.” HP’s press release and some information from the company’s investor call announcing the decision are right after the break.

eBay’s CEO, Meg Whitman said shortly after she came onboard at eBay that “no CEO should stay more than a decade in the same job because people need new challenges and organizations need fresh perspectives.” She joined the company in March of 1998 when there were only 29 employees employed over at eBay. It’s been about 10 years since her first day on the job and now the Wall Street Journal says Whitman has plans to retire. Apparently she’s sticking to her original belief that 10 years is enough time for one person to lead a company.
Remember those original 29 employees we mentioned that were there when she started? Now that number has grown to over 15,000! Her net worth has also increased substantially while at eBay to over $1.4 billion. During her time at the popular online auction site, the company has experienced both major ups and downs as any company experiences over a period of time. Some more recent examples of the ups and downs include a 3% decrease in auction listing during their third quarter. While that may not have been good, last year their income rose 4% to $1.13 billion which is certainly a positive thing. Although, lets not forget the big loss eBay took last year after they realized Skype wasn’t such a great buy after all.
Whitman hasn’t confirmed that she is leaving, however, sources say that she has been slowly delegating her responsibilities out to other people including John Donahoe, the current president of eBay’s auction business unit. He’s the one that’s expected to take her place once she say’s “See ya!” once and for all to eBay.

eBay Gets a New Look, New Features
Posted in: Features, Today's Chili, Web SitesThis article was written on September 19, 2007 by CyberNet.
eBay is in the process of making some major changes to the look and feel of the site in hopes of bringing people back to buy and sell. They’ve come a long way in the 12 years that they’ve been around, but over the last few years, things have gotten a bit rocky. According to a recent article in Business Week, this is "eBay’s bid to win back buyers." With multiple places online to buy and sell, eBay is no longer "the" place to go.
So what is it that has changed? Probably the most obvious is the look of their new home page. Sometimes change is hard for people to deal with, and in this situation, I think that’s the case. Now when a user logs in, they’ll see four main things – eBay categories, My Recent Activities, My eBay at a Glance which includes items you’re watching or selling, reminders, and more, and the option to Start shopping.
Another change you’ll notice as Download Squad pointed out, is that there’s now more options for viewing items that you’re searching for. In certain categories like computers – instead of just viewing all the items in a list, you can view them in a picture gallery, or snapshot view. The picture gallery is probably going to be the most beneficial because you get to see an image of what’s being sold, but you also have pertinent information like the price, shipping costs, and when it was listed. Think of it as window shopping.
This is only just the beginning of what eBay has in store. Coming soon they’ll have a few new features. One of them is "quick and easy," an option for selling items, and another is a countdown- a new way to manage and bid on auctions. The last change we can expect soon is one click bidding where users won’t be taken to a new page to confirm the bid that they entered.
If you’d like to test out some of eBay’s new features which they haven’t rolled out quite yet on their main site, you can visit The Playground where you’ll see some of the new things eBay is testing out.
