Visualized: eBay’s iPad 2 sales, thus far

Although eBay figures don’t exactly correlate with Apple’s sales numbers, it’s interesting to note who’s buying what, and where. Last year, for example, in the first two weeks after the Apple iPad hit shelves, 65 percent of all iPads sold on eBay went abroad. This year, in the same timeframe, the percentages have been flipped — 65 percent of iPad 2s sold on eBay remained in America, or around 7,800 tablets. Perhaps we’re just seeing higher demand or maybe people don’t like waiting in line. Peep the source link to dive deeper into the comparison.

Helpful Tip: Free eBay Bid Assistant Does Your Bidding

This article was written on August 09, 2007 by CyberNet.

I’m sure you’ve been in the situation before where you’ve wanted to purchase something on eBay, but there were multiple people selling the same thing. You probably placed a bid on one of the items in hopes that you’d win it, but you had to leave for work and wouldn’t know the results until you got home. The first thing you did when you got home was see if you won the auction…and you didn’t. Not only that but those similar auctions had also ended without you ever getting a chance to bid on them.

This is a pretty common problem, and eBay is taking it into their own hands to solve it. They have created a free Bid Assistant that anyone can use to do the bidding for them. It lets you "bid" on a group of items, and if you win one it won’t bid on the others. It will immediately bid on the item that ends the soonest in your group, and when one ends it will continue to bid on the others until you win or hit your maximum bid price.

To use it you’ll need to add all the items that you want to monitor to your Watch List. Then select the checkbox next to each one, and click the "Bid with Bid Assistant" button:

Bid Assistant

In this case I had two of the same computers being offered from the same person. It is common for eBay sellers to have multiple listings of the same items, and the Bid Assistant makes it easy to bid on each until you win one.

Now you can enter in the maximum price you want to pay for each individual item in the group, or you can set one price to be the global maximum bid:

It’s nice that they let you choose a price for each individual item because often times you may not be bidding on the exact same thing. For example, you may want an iPod, and so you’ll setup bids on various models. Or maybe you’re buying a present for someone and are bidding on several different ideas that you came up with.

To use the Bid Assistant you must have at least 5 feedback, but most of you are probably eBay veterans that have dozens if not hundreds of positive feedback. Also, the Bid Assistant will not snipe your bids (place them at the last second). To do that you would need to use a software application such as the free JBidWatcher, which also incorporates most of the features from the Bid Assistant as well.

Hopefully these tools will help you get the things you want at a price you can afford!

Twentieth Anniversary Macintosh Up for Auction on eBay

20th Anniversary Mac

Long before the first iMac, long before the iPod or iPhone, and back when Apple was a company that sold beige boxes and OS X was little more than a gleam in Steve Jobs’ eye, there was the 20th Anniversary Macintosh.
A special, custom model of the Macintosh built to celebrate Apple’s 20th anniversary in 1997, the system was a bronze, metallic beauty, almost cylindrical in shape, and earned rave reviews for its black, smooth design. Now, one can be yours, if you want to bid on it.
The 20th Anniversary Mac featured a 12.1 LCD display, a 2GB hard drive, a TV and FM radio tuner, a 4x CD-ROM drive, a floppy drive, a 250MHz IBM PowerPC processor, and a high-end custom-made Bose sound system with a pair of speakers that shared the computer’s design. The Mac also featured a special keyboard with a built-in trackpad and leather palm rests, and could slide up under the Mac’s body when not in use. It ships with a brand new version of Apple’s Mac OS 7.6.1.
Back when the 20th Anniversary Mac was released, it retailed for a whopping $7500. Only 11,60120th Anniversary Macs made it to users outside of Apple, and the one up on eBay now is in mint condition, and the unit has never been turned on.
The boxes have been opened for inspection, but all of the original parts, documentation, and software are included. As of this writing, the bidding is up to over $1500 USD, with 6 days remaining in the auction. Only caveat: this unit is definitely not eligible for an AppleCare Protection Plan.

Get Your 14 Karat Solid Gold iPhone Today

This article was written on May 14, 2007 by CyberNet.

IphonegoldMany people are anticipating the arrival of the iPhone, and we all know that it’s expected to be released mid-June.  But, why plan on getting a normal iPhone when you could get a 14 Karat solid gold iPhone? Where can you get one? eBay of course!

The gold iPhones aren’t the only ones available on eBay, but they’re probably getting the most attention.  The seller has 101 feedback with a 99% positive rating.  While his feedback score is good, there’s really not much to go off of. Especially because his listings are all private, and no one knows what the feedback was for.

He’s got the 4GB model selling for $9,500 on a buy-it- now, and he had the 8GB model selling for $10,000, however it says that this one was sold.  The buyer’s ID has been kept private, but it wouldn’t surprise me if someone created an account for the purpose of buying the phone with no intent to pay.

The items were just listed today because part of eBay’s policies regarding pre-sales are that the seller must guarantee that the item will ship within 30 days from the start of the listing.

I’m having a real hard time believing that this listing is legitimate, but you never know. Why you’d want a solid gold iPhone is beyond me! Maybe because you’d be the only one with it??

eBay Listing 2

The good news for those of you who don’t want to get a solid gold iPhone is that Apple execs are saying that they’re confident that the product will be shipping on time, and that they will be able to meet the initial demand for the phones.

Apple has their goal set high — they’re hoping to sell 10 million units within the first twelve months of sales which would give them 1% of the mobile market.

Keep in mind, Nintendo also said that they were prepared for the demand of the Wii, and look where they stand today. Until the iPhone actually launches, no one will really know if Apple is prepared to meet the demand.

Get 35% Off of eBay Purchases via Microsoft’s Cashback

This article was written on June 17, 2008 by CyberNet.

If you couldn’t tell by now, we’re all about saving a buck whenever we can. That’s why we told you about how you could get 10% off of eBay purchases through Microsoft’s Cashback program. We’re going to bring it up once more, only because they’ve sweetened the deal. Now when you search for certain items, you’ll see a link to get 35% off your purchase.

Razr - Live Search.png

We decided to go to Live Search and search for the Razr once more, and sure enough we saw the link to get up to 35% off of a purchase if you pay with PayPal. The key is that not all items are going to return the 35% offer. Some ads will still show 10% off so you just need to play around and search for different items. Aside from Razr, searching for “Cheap Xbox” also worked.

Once you see the ad, click on it and you’ll be taken to eBay. Once there you can go and search for most anything and still get the 35% percent off. When you think about it, that’s pretty significant. A $300 item would be $195 and a $200 item would be $130. If you have something in mind you need to purchase from eBay anyways, this is a great deal.

Heads of Google, eBay, Facebook and Twitter will advise G8 summit on how to search, sell, poke and RT

So what if Barack Obama managed to bring the vast majority of US tech leaders in for a private meeting recently? Nicolas Sarkozy can do it too! The French président and soon-to-be host of the next G8 gathering is said to be preparing some rather handsome invitations to Mark Zuckerberg, Eric Schmidt and a few other big timers from the internet in order to discuss the world wide web’s future direction. The input from these web sages is to be filtered down into a volume of extremely precious wisdom, which is to then be conveyed to the multinational meeting taking place in Deauville near the end of May. Sarkozy just needs to make sure the other seven participating nations don’t object before sending out the official invites. We have a pretty good idea of what Eric Schmidt thinks our future will involve, but Zuckerberg and the others? That’ll be interesting to hear.

eBay Sellers Can’t Leave Negative Feedback

This article was written on February 06, 2008 by CyberNet.

ebay feedback eBay’s feedback system has been around ever since February of 1996 when the founder, Pierre Omidyar sought to implement a way for members to exchange experiences. He explained that some people are honest, but others aren’t and the hope was that by sharing experiences, the dishonest would be driven away. The feedback system has received a few tweaks along the way, but it’s largely remained the same ever since 96′ – both the buyer and seller can leave positive, negative, or neutral feedback. That’s all about to change though, and there are people who aren’t too happy.

Starting in May, sellers will no longer be able to leave negative feedback for buyers.  Those of you who have only bought (versus buying and selling) on eBay may think that this is great because you’ll always have 100% positive feedback. eBay is full of great buyers and great sellers, but the problem is that there is an equal amount of dishonest buyers and sellers.  As someone who sold on eBay for a living, I can vouch for this.  There are buyers that consistently don’t pay or make unreasonable demands and abuse the system.  Sellers should be able to leave them negative feedback to warn other buyers of what they might be getting into.

While there have always been some issues with the feedback system like users reluctant to leave honest feedback for fear of retaliation, the proposed changes will make it even more flawed. If eBay isn’t satisfied with their current feedback system, instead of eliminating a portion of it, it might be time to overhaul it completely. eBay should start from scratch and come up with a new way for members to exchange experiences so that the dishonest are really driven away because at this point, they aren’t, and that includes both buyers and sellers.

Barnes & Noble now selling the Nook Color on eBay for $199

Well, this one strikes us as a little… odd. Barnes & Noble is currently selling its Nook Color on eBay (along with plenty of other things). The truly interesting part, however, is that the price, once a $50 coupon code is applied, is $199, which is of course $50 less than it sells them for in stores or on its own website. We aren’t sure what the motivation behind this move is, but we’d guess that the bookseller is attempting to compete with other, unofficial eBay retailers selling B&N’s goods. Either way, if you’re in the market for a Nook Color, eBay seems to be the place to get one, for now.

7-Year Old Boy Wins, Then Loses a Harrier Jet on eBay

Harrier Jump-Jet

The Harrier jet – most often used by the British Air force and the US Marines – isn’t too much to look at, but it’s one of the few aircraft in military service that are capable of traditional takeoffs and landings but can also angle their jet engines to take off and land vertically in small spaces. And one unnamed 7-year old London boy surfing eBay for what could probably be the coolest possible way to get to school in the morning decided that it had to be his.
Upon seeing the eBay auction for the Harrier Jump Jet, which proudly served in and still bears the markings of the British Royal Air Force, the boy hit “Buy it Now” and subsequently put himself and his father in debt for over $113,000 USD (the Buy it Now price was £69,999.)
Once his father found out what the boy had done, he immediately contacted Jet Aviation Limited, the company charged with selling the surplus Harrier, to let them know there had been a mistake.
Sadly, the 7-year-old boy will have to go without his jet-fueled ride to elementary school, but the folks at Jet Aviation Limited were more than appreciative of all of the additional attention the news brought to their listing. The company subsequently re-listed the jet to dozens of bids, and since the new listing is gone now, we can only hope the Harrier has sold and is on its way to a good home.
