Mercedes-Benz Vision S 500: it’s the plug-in hybrid for old people

Look, you won’t find a bigger bunch of fans of the C63 than this here crew, but man, that massive “plug-in hybrid” logo might as well say “70+ aged drivers only, please.” For everyone not interested in scooping up a Tesla Roadster, Chevy Volt or some other eco-friendly whip that they can’t afford, there’s the Mercedes-Benz Vision S 500. Made official this week during the run-up to the impending Frankfurt auto show, the 3.5-liter PHEV aims to grab the eyes of those who value class, comfort and luxury, and while this whole “gas mileage” thing is still very much in the air with this type of vehicle, early estimates peg the MPG rating at around 70. M-B has gifted the car with an 18-mile electric range, but most everything else is being veiled in secrecy until the full reveal next week.

MotionPower speed bump installed at NJ Burger King, McDonald’s and Wendy’s feel slighted

We can’t say we doubted that New Energy’s MotionPower speed bump would actually be installed at a New Jersey Burger King, but it’s always refreshing to see a plan morph into reality. As of now, those in Hillside heading to have it their way will cruise over the kinetic energy harvester before retrieving their grub, which has the potential to create around 2,000 watts of electricity from a car hitting it at five miles per hour. As of now, the hump is simply there to test storage potential, but New Energy is hoping that the next generation of the tech could be placed at a variety of fast foot eateries, parking lots, toll booth plazas and anywhere else where folks need a little assistance in maintaining a sensible speed. Toyota moves its two millionth hybrid vehicle, Ma Earth tips her hat

It’s incredibly hard to believe that the original Prius went on sale a full dozen years ago, but as the debatable face of the hybrid reaches its third generation, Toyota as a whole is celebrating the sale of its two millionth hybrid. As of August 31st, global sales of the automaker’s hybrid fleet has surpassed 2.01 million, and as of now, there are 13 hybrids in the company’s lineup. Later this year, Lexus (the outfit’s luxury brand) is set to see its fourth hybrid hit the streets, and it’s been said that Toyota could have a hybrid version of every motorcar it sells by the end of the next decade. Not like it’ll matter — we’ll all be cruising around in Jetson-mobiles or Tesla Roadsters by then, anyway.

Solar Roads get small DoE contract, confidence to change the world

Solar roadways? Yeah, we’ve seen ’em before, but we’ve yet to see America’s own Department of Energy give any one development company such a notable vouch of confidence. Just recently, the DoE handed over a $100,000 contract to Solar Roadways, which is just enough to build a prototype of the “first ever Solar Road panel.” The 12- x 12-foot panels could theoretically be embedded into roads, and when shined upon, could pipe good, clean electricity straight into the grid. Heck, they could even boast LEDs in order to alert drivers to upcoming accidents or changes in road conditions. Reportedly, each panel would cost around $7,000 (at least initially), and if these were used on the entire US Interstate system, we could pretty much forget about using non-renewable energy sources to power our homes and businesses. Of course, our government is simultaneously wasting money on repaving perfectly good roadways with antiquated asphalt, so there’s a tremendously great chance that this won’t amount to anything.

Amazon announces next wave of Frustration-Free Packaging

Now, this one we can all probably get behind. Amazon — which announced its “Frustration-Free Packaging” initiative back in November of last year, promising to kill clamshell plastic casings and the like — is making good on its word and stepping up the effort again. Joining the ranks of partners Fisher-Price, Mattel, Microsoft and Transcend, Amazon’s announced that Kingston Technologies is throwing its weight behind the drive to end our sadness and frustration as well. David Sun, co-founder and chief operating officer of Kingston also pointed out the eco-friendliness of such measures — which surely won’t be lost upon any of us, either. Kudos!

Ford’s vehicle-to-grid communications system charges plug-in whips on command

If you’re dreaming of always plugging your future AC-friendly hybrid in during the wee hours of the morning in order to juice up for the lowest price, you’re certainly using your noodle. But what about instances where you can’t choose when exactly you’ll be plugging in? Fret not, as Bill Ford and Company has you covered. The automaker, in collaboration with a slew of utility partners, has today introduced an intelligent vehicle-to-grid communications system that would theoretically enable vehicle owners to plug their ride in and tell it precisely when to begin and / or end charging via the navigation screen. Users could also define the completion time for charging or the desired rates in order to better control spending, though all that planning could be ruined by some random prankster who decides to yank your cable when you’re not looking. And really, who cares about saving a penny or two on charging when you can get two hundred and thirty miles per gallon? Oh, wait…

Chevy Volt nabs shaky 230 MPG rating, might not ship in 2010

We’ve always heard that you’ve got to take the bad with the good, but who said it had to be done at the same time? This morning, Government General Motors CEO Fritz Henderson had some rather sensational news to share about Chevrolet’s Volt, but according to a report over at Autocar, that very vehicle is looking at some serious (potential) issues. As for the good news, we’re told that the Volt has snagged a staggering 230 MPG rating in the city, but we should caution you that it’s not as cut and dry as GM would have you believe. The EPA has released “a new methodology for determining a draft fuel economy standard for extended-range EVs like the Volt,” and it’s that murky measurement system that has blessed Chevy’s wonder child with a triple digit MPG rating.

Now, for the bad news. This past Sunday, GM reportedly submitted a regulatory filing with the US Treasury, and while it can’t be taken as official word per se, it does provide reason to believe that the promised November ship date will slip to an undisclosed month and year. The report also noted that there is “no assurance” that it will qualify for any remaining energy loans to develop advanced fuel technology automobiles, and if you needed more reason to doubt the whole ordeal, have a look at this zinger: “Our competitors and others are pursuing similar technologies and other competing technologies, in some cases with more money available; there can be no assurance that they will not acquire similar or superior technologies sooner than we do.” Ah well — at least we know the four or five prototype models destined for eBay will do Ma Earth proud, right?

Update: CNN has a nice look at this incredibly large MPG figure, and — surprise, surprise — it’s not nearly as fantastic as it looks at first glance.

Samsung and Sprint introduce the Reclaim — a cellphone made from corn

We love the Earth, and apparently so do Sprint and Samsung. The two companies have just introduced the Reclaim, a super-eco cellphone made from 80 percent recycled materials. The device — a stout, sliding, QWERTY message-friendly model — is constructed from “bio-plastic” materials made from corn, is free of PVC, and mostly free of BFR (brominated flame retardants)… which are apparently pretty bad. The phone also has a 2 megapixel camera, stereo Bluetooth, can accept microSD cards (we assume) up to 32GB, and has Sprint Navigation onboard. The packaging will be eco-friendly as well, as it’s constructed from 70 percent recycled materials and printed with soy-based ink. The carrier will be selling the Reclaim in “Earth Green” or “Ocean Blue” come August 16th for $50 (after a $30 instant rebate and $50 mail-in rebate) with a two-year contract. Additionally, $2 of that profit will be funneled to the Nature Conservancy’s Adopt an Acre program. Finally, a phone that goes with your Prius.

OSU foresters swap tree fibers for rubber in fuel efficient tires

Leave it to a gaggle of brilliant wood science researchers at Oregon State University to figure out that we’ve been doing this whole “tire” thing wrong for generations now. While studying some uses of microcrystalline cellulose, which can be made easily from practically any type of plant fiber, these Earth-loving gurus discovered that said material could actually improve the efficiency of vehicle tires when used in place of silica. Granted, only about 12 percent of the silica — which is used as a reinforcing filler in the manufacture of rubber tires — was swapped out, but the resulting tires gripped just as well in wet weather while decreasing the rolling resistance during those dry summer months. Furthermore, tires constructed with these fibers could be made with less energy, though long-term durability studies are still needed to prove that this whole plan is viable for more than a few thousand miles.

Baryonyx to build largest offshore wind farms in the US, power massive data centers

Uh oh Mr. Pickens — looks like you’ve got some competition down in Texas. With the aforesaid energy baron scraping plans to plant 687 massive wind turbines in Texas’ panhandle, Baryonyx has stepped in to do the honors via a slightly different project. Just this past week, Baryonyx won a bid to create a pair of sizable offshore wind farms that Jerry Patterson — Commissioner of the Texas General Land Office — says “could be the biggest offshore wind farms in the nation.” Additionally, another lease was granted for a prospective wind energy development in the panhandle, and now the company is eager to get going on the green energy gigs. The best part of this whole plan involves that actual purpose of the turbines; aside from providing juice for grids, they’ll also be used to energize forthcoming Tier 4 server farms, with a minimum of 750 megawatts of power being pumped to two coastal areas all the while. Ma Earth would be proud.
