Energizer expands Energi To Go charging line with more solar, iPhone options

We’ve seen Energizer dabble in portable charging solutions before, but we’ve yet to see it go all out like this. Thanks to a newfound partnership with XPAL Power, the company famous for making drum-toting bunnies famous has issued several new wares in its Energi To Go line. The rechargeable power packs and emergency chargers — over ten of ’em in all — will all ship by July of 2009 and will include devices for PMPs, PNDs, portable DVD players, netbooks and digicams. There’s even an AP Charger that mounts your iPhone (à la mophie’s Juice Pack Air), and the SP line consists only of solar-driven power packs designed to rejuvenated your iPod, camera and pretty much any other handheld device. There’s no mention of price just yet, but as with anything Energizer, you can go ahead and brace for sticker shock.

GM says bankruptcy won’t affect the Volt, but how much say does it have?

As General Motors finally caved this morning, waved the white flag and filed for bankruptcy, those following electric cars immediately wondered what this all would mean for the long-awaited Volt. For years now, GM has steadfastly affirmed that it was moving forward with production regardless of what else was going on within the company and the economy at large. According to Technology Review, a GM spokesperson confirmed again this morning that “the filing will have no impact on the company’s plans to start selling the Volt at the end of next year.” That said, we have to wonder how much such a statement really means; reports have stated that the US government may up holding as much as 60 percent of the company, and if the primary goal is to bring the outfit back to profitability as soon as possible, Obama and Company may not feel that pouring even more into the high-priced Volt is a good idea. In related news, we hear Tesla is still taking orders…

Update: GM has pushed out an official statement that (in a few words) also suggests that the Volt is still on track.

Ultra-powerful laser could make incandescent light bulbs more efficient

Look, LED light bulbs are fanciful, great for Ma Earth and a fine addition to any home, barber shop or underground fight club. But let’s be honest — even the guy that bikes through blizzards to get to work and wears garb that he grew in his basement isn’t apt to shell out $120 a pop to have what’s likely the most efficient light bulb American dollars can buy. Enter Chunlei Guo from the University of Rochester, who has helped discover a process which could morph a traditional incandescent light bulb into a beacon of burning light without using nearly as much energy as before. In fact, his usage of the femtosecond laser pulse — which creates a “unique array of nano- and micro-scale structures on the surface of a regular tungsten filament” — could enable a bulb to increase output efficiency in order to emit 100-watts worth of light while sucking down less than 60-watts of power. Per usual, there’s no telling when this new hotness is likely to hit the commercial realm, but one’s thing for sure: we bet GE‘s paying attention.

IDT to swap solar cells into LCDs, but not for energy reasons

Solar-powered LCDs? Oh, yeah — we’ve got those. Sadly, that’s not at all what Integrated Digital Technologies is aiming to improve upon next week at Computex, though we still find its approach to trimming LCD weight and manufacturing costs an interesting one. If we’re digesting this correctly, we’re hearing that the outfit plans to create interactive displays (or iScreens) that have embedded solar cells in the TFT array rather than extra film or glass with photo sensors. The result? A cost savings of up to 30 percent in manufacturing, not to mention a rather significant decrease in weight. Without any images to go by, it’s still a wee bit tough to really wrap our heads around this new take, but hopefully we’ll see more next week in Taiwan.

Sharp slings out industry’s thinnest solar modules for cellphones

Timely, no? Just a month after Sharp aided in producing the planet’s first waterproof solar cellphone, the aforementioned outfit has just announced the industry’s thinnest solar module for handsets. Checking in at just 0.8 millimeters thick, the LR0GC02 shouldn’t take up too much space on your daughter’s great-granddaughter’s smartphone, and while Sharp isn’t handing over too many details just yet, we figure it’ll pretty much do what it says. You know — charge the handset it’s integrated into whenever sunlight is available. As for when we’ll see these in cellphones everywhere? Take a wild guess, tree-hugger.

Air-fuelled STAIR battery could last ten times longer than traditional cells

It’s funny, really. We’ve figured out how to put men an women on the moon and repair an orbiting telescope, but we can’t concoct an AA battery that lasts more than four days inside a Teddy Ruxpin. Thanks to a revolutionary new design from the labs at the University of St Andrews, all that could be well on the way to changin’. Researchers at said institution have teamed up with partners at Strathclyde and Newcastle in order to design an air-fuelled STAIR (St Andrews Air) cell that could theoretically last up to ten times longer than current batteries. Put as simply as possible, this design utilizes oxygen in the air as a re-agent instead of heavy, costly chemicals; the result is a lighter, cheaper battery with loads more capacity. Needless to say, gurus within the project are already dreaming of a prototype to fit in small gizmos such as cellphones or MP3 players, though we wouldn’t expect one anytime soon — after all, there’s still two years of research left to complete.

Taiwan’s National Stadium gets solar panel roof, hug from Ma Earth

Oh sure, we’ve seen photovoltaic panels strewn across rooftops before, but this takes things to a whole ‘nother level. Taiwan’s $152 million National Stadium, which will proudly host the 2009 World Games, is home to no fewer than 8,844 solar panels. With under a month to go before the events kick off, construction on the Toyo Ito-designed arena wrapped just in time, and we’re told that some 55,000 observers will soon be spectating underneath the eco-friendly shelter. Early reports have noted that in optimal sunlight, the solar panels can cover around 75 percent of the stadium’s energy needs, and on days when the facility is dormant, the power generated is simply fed into the grid in order to help the local community. So, who’s down for a trip to Kaohsiung? Sunscreen’s on us.

Elektromotive debuts billable charge station for electric vehicles

Electric vehicles are about as far from ubiquitous as a burgeoning technology could be, but that’s not stopping Elektromotive from thinking about future profits. Said firm has just revealed what it’s calling the first-ever billable charge station for EVs, a three phase chargepoint that can supply up to 32 amps at 240V. The station itself is dubbed the Elektrobay, which is equipped with a 2-way GSM service called EBConnect; the latter enables users with specialized key fobs to simply wave their key in front of the pole, charge and be invoiced at a later time. Think PayPass, but for EV charging. We’re told that the new billing system will be installed in all 160 of the Elektrobay units in the UK, and you can bank on it being baked into all future installations — so much for free juice, huh?

METROBuddy electric car debuts, kind of resembles a mail van

Looking from behind, one might assume that the METROBuddy is an electric car with style. Unfortunately, those hopes are dashed when peeking the whole whip from the side, as you suddenly become overwhelmed with hints of USPS mail van, garbage truck and a rather large protractor. Design gripes aside, our good pals over at AutoblogGreen were able to sneak a peek at the bantam automobile, which supposedly packs a range of around 50 to 75 miles on a full charge. There’s been no mention yet of a price or global release (don’t get your hopes up on the latter), but feel free to have a better look around in the vid just past the break.

Eco-friendly Clayton iHouse on sale, coming to a highbrow trailer park near you

Clayton Homes, a US-based company which makes and sells manufactured (prefab) homes, is getting in on the i-naming game with their latest bit of construction. The iHouse is a prefabricated, customizable house that is so energy efficient that Clayton estimates it costs about $1 per day to cover all of its electricity and heating needs. The house makes use of solar panels, energy-efficient appliances, thick walls, heavy insulation, a rainwater-catching system, a tankless water heater, and dual flush toilets to meet its eco-friendly goals. The company, which sold about 30,000 manufactured homes last year, thinks that the iHouse could quickly come to represent about 10 percent of its business. Prototypes of the house — which at around 1,000 square feet costs $140,000 completely furnished — are popping up all over the US, and as of last Saturday, are officially on sale nationwide.
