Google announces Android event for February 2nd

Had enough Honeycomb this week? Perhaps — but next week is a whole new week, and Google’s got your back. Mountain View has selected Wednesday, February 2nd for an event that’ll include “an in-depth look at Honeycomb, Android ecosystem news and hands-on demos,” so by all accounts this seems to be more than a mere wrap-up of everything they’ve announced in the past few weeks. New tablets? Honeycomb for smartphones? Android 2.4? Something else entirely? We’ll be there to find out, of course.

HP calls us out, implies it’s got even better scoops at February webOS event

Look, let’s be real: our Palm tablet scoop today was awesome. For its part, though, HP wants to remind us all that it’s got other news in the pipe for its event early next month, going so far as to tease invitees that they haven’t seen the latest on Engadget.

Not to say that we won’t be trying very, very hard to ensure that our readers do see the latest right here… but point taken, HP. See you in a couple weeks.

HP’s Todd Bradley all but confirms webOS tablet for February 9th event, promises even more devices

We do love to hear from loquacious execs, and HP’s Todd Bradley has been the very definition of one in an interview conducted with CNBC during CES. In a discussion revolving around webOS, Bradley was asked how HP intends to differentiate itself from the iPad and improve upon it, to which he quipped, “you and I will talk about that on the 9th.” If that’s not a confirmation that we’ll finally have our unicorn of a webOS tablet next month, we don’t know what is. Even more encouraging is the implication further on in the interview that HP could have debuted this slate at CES, but opted to do an unveiling at a separate event so as to properly highlight just how awesome it is. But wait, there’s yet more good news for webOS fans: Bradley’s crew sees its upcoming tablet as just “one piece” of the connected experience that is the company’s goal and we’re promised to be enlightened about a broad range of webOS devices at the February 9th event in San Francisco, though the lack of any Palm namedrops seems to suggest they might not bear the name of their maker. Even if they’re called iPaqs, we just want to see them already!

Sprint promises ‘industry first’ at February 7th event

Let’s just end the speculation right here: a Sprint-locked CDMA iPhone on the heels of Verizon’s wouldn’t be much of an “industry first,” so we’re thinking that whatever the company has to unveil on the evening of February 7th in New York will be of a very different flavor. The event invite goes on to say that they’ll show “that the impossible is possible,” which could very well mean the Epic 4G is getting Froyo. Burn! Also look for guest David Blaine to hold his breath in a tank of things that bite for 45 minutes or so, which will make for an awesome liveblog (yes, we’ll be there).

Verizon’s iPhone 4 has a CDMA-specific antenna, no other changes made

Would you look at that, Verizon’s iPhone 4 has four notches punctuating its external antenna array — one more than you may find on AT&T’s version, with the top notch migrating to the side. Before you all jump on conspiracy theories about fixes and such, Tim Cook has just confirmed on stage that changes had to be made to work on the CDMA network, meaning that for users this is pretty much an aesthetic alteration. Otherwise, you’re looking at an almost identical device to what AT&T users have been enjoying since June of last year — savvy nerds will just be able to tell the CDMA version apart at one glance.

HP invites press to an ‘exciting webOS announcement’ on February 9th

Oh boy — here we go. HP has just issued an invitation to the press for a webOS event in San Francisco on February 9th. The minimal email asks attendees to ‘Think Big. Think Small. Think Beyond.’ — and that definitely sounds like a multi-product launch to us. If we were betting types, we’d put money on a phone (perhaps rumors we’ve been hearing about the ‘world’s smallest’ smartphone will turn out to be true), a tablet, and lots of talk about the future of webOS. One thing missing? The name Palm. Looks like that brand could be on the way out. Regardless, we’ll be there live delivering the news in true Engadget fashion… so get ready!

Nintendo won’t be exhibiting at CES 2011 after all, will conduct meetings behind closed doors

Wait, put the cork back in the champagne, Nintendo isn’t making its triumphant return to CES after all. The Consumer Electronics Association has just blasted out a new press release, presumably with a face red with embarrassment, to correct its erroneous note that Nintendo will be an exhibitor at the 2011 tech showcase. As it turns out, Satoru Iwata‘s crew have booked some meeting rooms during the show — to discuss what, we don’t know — which somewhere along the line was misinterpreted to mean that the company will be exhibiting its wares. It won’t. We’ll be there anyway, this just means we’ll have to be a little craftier about extracting our information.

[Thanks, Curtis]

What’s on Facebook’s mind? Mobile event set for November 3rd

Facebook’s made no official push into the smartphone universe — to date, we’ve been left using various mobile apps to connect with J. Timberlake, Marky Z. and the rest of the crew, but it looks as if the preeminent social networking site of our generation (ahem) is just about ready to clear the air on at least one issue. The invite above recently landed in our inbox, requesting our presence at “a mobile event at Facebook HQ” in Palo Alto, California. Naturally, we’ll be on hand from NorCal bringing you the blow-by-blow, and we’re interested to know what you think will be on deck. Will we finally see the Facebook phone that it quickly shot down? The Nexus Two with a borderline-criminal amount of Facebook integration? The resurgence of using pastel colored tin cans to connect Jane and Joe? Whatever the case, we’re sure It’s Complicated.
