Harry Potter, Inception Coming to Facebook Streaming

harry-potter-1-1.jpg

Granted, it’s probably not quite time to begin hailing Facebook as a serious competitor to the Netflixes and Hulus of the world, but the social network seems to be off to a fairly strong start, considering that, until this week, the site only offered a single film: The Dark Knight

Warner and Facebook are still in the trial stages of this new offering, but the studio is upping the ante a bit, with the addition of three high profile flicks–Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, and Inception.

Also in the lot are Life as We Know It and Yogi Bear, bringing the full movie tally for the site up half a dozen. All movies can be streamed their respective fan pages or the Warner page. They can be rented by the clicking the Watch Now button. Rentals run 30 Facebook Credits or three human American dollars.

Facebook Looking to Hire Former Obama Press Secretary – Rumor

robert gibbs.jpg

The tech industry tends to be a pretty incestuous place, when it comes to hiring. Once you get to a certain level, there are really only so many places you can go, which is why there’s a constant parade of stories about executives and lead engineers shifting between Google and Facebook and Twitter and Apple, et al.

Sometimes, however, you see a left field choice–those are the most fun, naturally. Like this latest rumor that Facebook is courting Robert Gibbs–yep, the same Robert Gibbs who spent the first few years of the Obama administration standing behind a podium in the White House press room, offering up sarcastic retorts about Republicans in Congress.
Gibbs exited his gig as the White House press secretary back in February, having served Obama for two years. After leaving, Gibbs was reportedly seeking a gig in the private sector. Facebook is apparnetly looking to gigs to fill in a top spot, just before the company’s initial public offering hits early next year.
Gibbs and Facebook have both declined to address the issue.

Warner Bros. expands movie rentals via Facebook with five more high profile titles

After dipping a toe in the waters with The Dark Knight, starting tonight Warner is offering five more movies for streaming on Facebook including Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Inception, Life as We Know It and Yogi Bear. The deal remains the same, with United States viewers able to pay for a 48-hour viewing window instantly in Facebook credits then enjoy the flick with full functionality on the page, and pause/resume tied to their login on the site. Even with an increasing number of movie titles including recent ones like Yogi Bear that just debuted last week, it’s hard to see any VOD service seriously challenging the current video rental incumbents like iTunes and Netflix, especially one that offers only SD rentals viewable on the PC. What it does offer however is a quick way for Warner to monetize the significant Facebook communities around popular movies, which may be enough to keep this program growing for the foreseeable future. Either way, the pages should be live starting at 1 a.m., check the press release after the break if you need more details.

BrandFinance declares Google the most valuable brand in the world

Well, it looks Eric Schmidt wasn’t far off when he said recently that Microsoft is bigger competition than Facebook for Google — at least when it comes to overall brand value, that is. According to BrandFinance’s latest annual ranking, Google has just barely edged out Microsoft for the title of most valuable brand in the world, with the pair of them pushing Walmart out from the number one spot last year. As for Facebook, it just entered the top 500 for the first time at number 285, while Apple jumped twelve spots to make its first appearance in the top ten at number eight — a shift that partly comes at the expense of usual suspect Coca Cola, which has dropped out of the top ten for the first time. The biggest loser? Nokia. It dropped all the way from number 21 last year to number 94 this year. Hit up the source link below for the complete list.

Facebook Banning 20,000 Underaged Users Daily

facebooklogo.jpg

Facebook’s bouncers are working hard to ensure that no one under the age of 13 is allowed on the site. According to the social network’s chief privacy adviser, Mozelle Thompson, Facebook attempts to cut off underaged kids before they sign up, but those preemptive safeguards aren’t always successful.

Thompson told Australian parliament, “There are people who lie. There are people who are under 13 [accessing Facebook]. Facebook removes 20,000 people a day, people who are underage.” Even with all of the safeguards in place, however, Thompson added, the vetting process is “not perfect.”

Blame the 2010 elections for your parents being on Facebook, Twitter

Most of the so-called “young folks” would argue that Facebook lost its innocence the day that parents were invited to play along, but there’s no question that politicians would disagree vehemently. A recent study published by the number crunchers at Pew Internet found that over half (54 percent, if we’re being precise) of adults “used the internet for political purposes in the last cycle, far surpassing the 2006 midterm contest.” A total of 58 percent hopped online for political news, while one in five (22 percent) used Twitter or a social networking site for “political purposes” in 2010. Taken as a whole, a staggering 73 percent of online adults took part in at least one of these activities in 2010, and judging by the power of these networks in the recent Middle Eastern / African uprisings, we get the impression that figures will only be rising in elections to come. Too bad you can’t “Like” a politician to give them your vote — haven’t these polling places realized what century we’re in?

Accused Polygamist Busted Over Facebook Pics

Thumbnail image for I 'LIKE' You-Facebook Valentine.jpg

Tales of people getting fired from their job, broken up with, and passed over for work due to online content are as old as social networks themselves. This, however, may well be the first polygamist marriage busted via Facebook. So we’ve decided it needs a good nickname. How about “Big Like?”

Kody Brown, a 34-year-old Michigan resident, was busted on charges of polygamy after images from his second marriage discovered on Facebook. The images were discovered by Adina Quarto, Brown’s first (and still current) wife. After Brown unfriended Quarto before marrying his second wife in July of last year, images of the second marriage started popping up on the site.

“I didn’t think he deserved to get away with it,” Quarto told the press. “I’m not a bitter person and I’m not trying to destroy the guy. If he wants to start a new life, more power to him, but he got married when he shouldn’t have gotten married.”

As for Brown’s second wife? She’s reportedly “absolutely shocked” by the news.

INQ Cloud Touch gets priced in the UK, still MIA in the USA

We’ve had an affinity for INQ’s Cloud Touch since we Poked and prodded the little device back in February, and now thanks to Carphone Warehouse we’ve got the all important pricetag to accompany the specs. Starting April 6, you’ll be able to pick up the Facebook-ified device in the UK completely SIM-free for £300, or about $486. Not a bad deal for a 3.5-inch Android 2.2 handset with a 5-megapixel shooter and a custom Facebook homescreen. Of course, it lacks the Facebook Buttons of HTC’s offerings, but if you simply can’t wait to be the first person on the block with a Facebook phone you should definitely give the Cloud Touch a peek.
