Ironman is Real and Hes Almost Ready to Kick Some Butt

Ironman ExoskeletonWhat is Marvel’s Ironman comic book hero but an average guy with a failing heart wearing a really awesome exoskeleton? It’s not as implausible as, say, a “man who can fly” or a dude who turns into a giant green body builder when he’s angry. So why should be surprised when we hear that a real-world “ironman” exoskeleton may be coming to a shipping yard or military operation near you?

According to a report on the Salt Lake Tribune, Massachusetts-based defense contractor Raytheon-Sarcos has developed a 195-lb, full-body suit, the XOS-2 that can make a 200 pound weight feel like 12 pounds and give the wearer the ability to punch through a roughly 6-inch-thick wood wall.

Despite the millions already spent developing the suit, Ratheon’s body suit looks nowhere near as impressive as the armor worn by Robert Downey Jr. in the Ironman movies; nor can it travel great distances without an external hydraulic power pack. That will all change, eventually, According to Raytheon executives, tethered industrial use could come as early as three years from now. Fully mobile, combat-ready use is at least five years away.

Even so, who doesn’t want to try one of these on today?

The Snail Induction Cooker May Someday Replace Your Stove

The Snail - Concept Induction CookerHigh-end kitchen appliances and gadgets can get pretty high tech if you’re willing to spend some money, and appliance manufacturers know it. Most manufacturers are always on the look out for ways to design and build next-generation products that pack more tech into smaller space. Electrolux recently held their annual Design Lab Competition, and the winner was The Snail, a concept portable induction heater that may one day replace the need for traditional stoves and cook-tops.

The Snail was the brainchild of designer Peter Alwin, who envisioned a kitchen without a range, but instead the ability to attach a gadget to the side of a pot or saucepan and use induction heating to cook the contents of the pan. It’s up to Electrolux now to decide whether The Snail is worth the investment to bring into reality, but the idea of truly portable cooking without the need to set up a camp stove, build a fire, or bring along a generator is pretty compelling.

Sony demoes flexible electronic paper display, tickles our fancy

Say, did the air just get a little richer in vapor? Sony has titillated its home nation with a demonstration of a new flexible e-paper display, which looks set to compete with LG’s, HP’s, Toshiba’s, and hell even Sony’s own, flexi-display ventures. Employing a plastic substrate, the above prototype is apparently capable of being rolled up like a regular old newspaper — presumably fly-swatting is not a problem either — but we have our usual reservations about yet another flexible display teaser. Oh, they’re all gorgeous and revolutionary, it’s just that we’re not seeing too many of them in our local Walmarts, you know?

How Context-Aware Computing Will Make Gadgets Smarter

Small always-on handheld devices equipped with low-power sensors could signal a new class of “context-aware” gadgets that are more like personal companions.

Such devices would anticipate your moods, be aware of your feelings and make suggestions based on them, says Intel.

“Context-aware computing is poised to fundamentally change how we interact with our devices,” Justin Rattner, CTO of Intel told attendees at the company’s developer conference.

“Future devices will learn about you, your day, where you are and where you are going to know what you want,” he added. “They will know your likes and dislikes.”

Context-aware computing is different from the simple sensor-based applications seen on smartphones today. For instance, consumers today go to an app like Yelp and search for restaurants nearby or by cuisine and price. A context-aware device would have a similar feature that would know what restaurants you have picked in the past, how you liked the food and then make suggestions for restaurants nearby based on those preferences. Additionally, it would be integrated into maps and other programs on the device.

Researchers have been working for more than two decades on making computers be more in tune with their users.  That means computers would sense and react to the environment around them. Done right, such devices would be so in sync with their owners that the former will feel like a natural extension of the latter.

“The most profound technology are those that disappear,” Mark Weiser, chief scientist at Xerox PARC and father of the term “ubiquitous computing” told in 1991 about context awareness in machines. “They are those that weave themselves into the fabric of everyday life.”

Making this possible on PCs has proved to be challenging, says Rattner. But the rise of smartphones and GPS-powered personal devices could change that.

“We now have the infrastructure needed to make context-aware computing possible,” says Rattner.

The next step is smarter sensors, say Intel researchers. Today, while smartphones come equipped with accelerometers and digital compasses, the data gathered from these sensors is used only for extremely basic applications.

“Accelerometers now are used to flip UI,” says Lama Nachman, a researcher at Intel. “But you can go beyond that to start sending human gait and user behavior.”

For instance, sensors attached to a TV remote control can collect data on how the remote is held by different users and build profiles based on that. Such a remote, of which Intel showed a prototype at the conference, could identify who’s holding the remote and offer recommendations for TV shows based on that.

Overall, context-aware devices will have to use a combination of “hard-sensing,” or raw physical data about a user (such as where you are), and “soft-sensing” information about the user, such as preferences and social networks, to anticipate needs and make recommendations. This creates the cognitive framework for managing context.

On the hardware side, context-aware computing will call for extremely energy-efficient sensors and devices. Devices will also have to change their behavior, says Rattner.

“We can’t let devices go to sleep and wake them up when we need them,” he says. “We will need to keep the sensory aspects on them up and running at all times and do it at minimum power.”

So far, context-aware computing hasn’t found commercial success, says Intel. But as phones get smarter and tablets become popular, the company hopes users will have a device where apps disappear and become part of the gadget’s intelligence.

Augmented Reality Wars: Projected Versus On-screen

A Japanese research group recently created a prototype for a “gaming system” utilizing a camera synced with a portable projector. The gizmo projects an adorable little cartoon character (it is Japanese after all) who reacts with the 2D world he is projected on to. For example, if you jerk the projection up, he acts like he’s flying. But also he will “walk” along a bold horizontal line or climb down a zig-zag.

As you may have already concluded, at this point in its development, this game is pretty lame (from a gaming point of view).

However, it shows one of the branches in the developing field of Augmented Reality. Many people are developing AR in terms of personal electronic devices–iPhones, iPads, things with “i” in front of them–in the form of Google Goggles, QR codes, etc. This is the on-screen category (also including the inevitable rise of glasses).

But there’s also people developing AR with projected content.

In the battle of projected vs. on-screen augmented realities, on-screen wins hands-down. Projected AR has zero practicality for individuals (mostly due to the ever-present problem of lookey-loos). For everyday use, a hand-held device are the way to go. Projected AR might be useful in group settings like presentations, marketing to pedestrians, or tour groups. But aside from that, do you really want strangers to be all up in your to-do list and Google searches? 

While the concept of projected AR has a certain kitschy value, it’s going to be of limited appeal when you can have the same experience on your private hand-held device, or down-the-line with AR-enabled glasses or contact lenses.

AMD’s Bobcat and Bulldozer, 2011 flagship CPU cores, detailed today

One of these days AMD is gonna have to stop talking about its Atom-killing Bobcat and Xeon-ending Bulldozer cores and finally release them. But, until that happy moment arrives in 2011 (fingers crossed), we’ll have to content ourselves with more presentation slides. First up, the Bobcat core is AMD’s long overdue play for the netbook/ultrathin market. Pitched as having 90 percent of the performance of current-gen, K8-based mainstream chips, AMD’s new mobility core will require “less than half the area and a fraction of the power” of its predecessors. That sounds like just the recipe to make the company relevant in laptop purchasing decisions again, while a touted ability for the core to run on less than one watt of power (by lowering operating frequencies and voltages, and therefore performance) could see it appear in even smaller form factors, such as MIDs. The Bobcat’s now all set to become the centerpiece of the Ontario APU — AMD’s first Fusion chip, ahead of Llano — which will be ramping up production late this year, in time for an early 2011 arrival.

The Bulldozer also has a future in the Fusion line, but it’s earliest role will be as a standalone CPU product for servers and high-end consumer markets. The crafty thing about its architecture is that every one Bulldozer module will be counted as two cores. This is because AMD has split its internal processing pipelines into two (while sharing as many internal components as possible), resulting in a sort of multicore-within-the-core arrangement. The way the company puts it, it’s multithreading done right. Interlagos is the codename of the first Opteron chips to sport this new core, showing up at some point next year in a 16-core arrangement (that’s 8 Bulldozers, if you’re keeping score at home) and promising 50 percent better performance than the current Magny-Cours flagship. Big words, AMD. Now let’s see you stick to a schedule for once.

Bill Gates just might be the world’s most famous college dropout (sorry, Kanye), but lest you think he’s changed his mind about the educational establishment, he’s got a few words of reassurance for you. As the closing speaker of the Techonomy 2010 conference, Bill dished out his vision of how learning will evolve over the next few years, stating his belief that no single university will be able to match the internet when it comes to providing the learning resources a student needs. Describing traditional studies as “place-based” and inefficient, he forecasts that university education will become five times less important within five years, with online lecture sources picking up the reins of enlightening our youth. In other news, Bill’s pen-based tablet PC idea is going great!

Token multitouch screen shows us the future of DJing, today (video)


Think you know multitouch surfaces? Think again. We’ve just come across a video demo of the Token multitouch, erm, pedestal, which seems to have come straight from the future. A clear sheet of glass that beams out video from your computer and accepts touch inputs in return, the Token concept has been designed by a chap named Rodrigo hailing out of Chile. We know it uses a rear projector for its video, but other construction details are scarce at this point; what’s really special here, however, is the way he combines it with a Traktor Pro controller titled Emulator, turning a few intelligent finger swipes into a kickass light-and-sound show. Terrafugia’s flying car Transitions into a safer, better, tamer-looking personal transporter

Whether you classify it as a roadable aircraft or a flying car, Terrafugia’s Transition looks resolutely set on avoiding vaporware status and becoming a bona fide commercial reality late next year. It’s ironic, then, that the latest development is being illustrated with a bunch of renders, but what they show is a significantly redesigned body, which now comes with FAA-approved safety features and brings the hybrid vehicle closer to its final shape. The new design integrates lessons learned from the Transition’s test flight last year to improve the wing shape and retraction mechanism, while also including an impact-absorbing crumple zone in the nose. The two-seater now also comes with a touchscreen center console — because nothing signals modernity better than a touchscreen — and can be seen in all its computer-generated glory on video after the break.

Driverless vans set off on intercontinental trek from Italy to China (video)

You might not have expected the future to look like your granddad’s groovy camper van, but take a closer look here and you’ll find that this is indeed nothing like your forefather’s people carrier. The VisLab team from the University of Parma have taken a fleet of Piaggio Porter Electric vehicles, strapped them with an array of cameras, lasers and other sensors, and topped them off with solar panels to keep the electronics powered. Oh, and lest we forgot to mention: the vans are (mostly) autonomous. VIAC (or VisLab Intercontinental Autonomous Challenge) is the grand name given to their big demonstration: an 8,000-mile, 3-month tour that will ultimately find them arriving in Shanghai, China, having set off from Milan this Tuesday. You can follow the day-by-day development on the blog below, though we’re still being told that practical driverless road cars are a measure of decades, not years, away.
