Apple Third Largest Global PC Maker, Including iPad

Thumbnail image for Thumbnail image for ipadnytimes.jpg

Those are words I never expected to type, three years ago. According to new numbers from research firm Canalys, Apple is the third largest global maker of PCs, smaller than only HP and Acer.

Of course, as one might imagine, there’s a pretty major caveat here that puts the company just ahead of Dell (the two manufacturers are at 11.5 and 11.4 million shipped units, respectively)–the number includes iPads shipped. Apple nabbed 10.8 percent of the total PCs shipped globally for the fourth quarter of 2010 (HP and Acer got 17.7 and 13.6 percent).

When the company’s popular tablet is factored in, Apple’s shipping volume increased 240 percent from Q4 2009 to Q4 2010 (versus a less staggering 19 percent growth of the industry overall).
Canalys justified the inclusion of the iPad thusly,
Any argument that a pad is not a PC is simply out of sync. With screen sizes of seven inches or above, ample processing power, and a growing number of applications, pads offer a computing experience comparable to netbooks. They compete for the same customers and will happily coexist. As with smart phones, some users will require a physical keyboard, while others will do without.

Emoticon Keypad Will Help You Share Your E-Feelings

emoticon_keypad.jpgFor anyone who likes to make sure the person on the other end of an instant message knows their true feelings by using emoticons, you’ll be happy to know that a prototype of a special emoticon keypad was shown at CES earlier this month. Displayed at the Lavatelli booth, the keypad has a 4×4 grid of bubble buttons that make it easy for you to hit the right emoticon. No more accidentally typing the wrong letters or symbols to create a nonsensical emoticon.

The keypad looks more like a Boggle game, and this device will surely end up on gadget gag Web sites, rather than serious retailers. You must know someone in your life that overuses emoticons. Send that person a hint by buying him or her the emoticon keypad when it’s eventually released. We’ll keep you posted on the date. 😀

Best Buy Getting Motorola Xoom for $700 – Report

moto tablet side finger1.jpg

Of course, shortly after the that $800 Motorola Xoom price point hits comes another, slightly more manageable number from someone who apparently has access to Best Buy’s internal paperwork.

Anroid Central, who also broke the news about the $800 Verizon price, got its hands on a memo from Best Buy putting the Xoom’s pricing at $699.99. Still pricey, sure, but down $100 from what we saw over the weekend.

Thing is, that $799.99 price from Verizon was the minimum advertised price, meaning the company can, theoretically, charge less than that, it’s just not allowed to go around bragging about it.

Motorola Xoom Priced at $800 – Report

moto tablet finger.jpg

Yowtch. The Motorola Xoom was largely considered the big tablet his of this year’s CES, thanks in no small part to the fact that it was really the only one running Android 3.0 Honeycomb–the first version of the mobile OS designed specifically with tablets in mind.

So, how much will you have to pay for this eagerly awaited device? One would imagine the company would undercut the price point of the tablet’s chief competition–Apple’s iPad and Samsung’s Galaxy Tab. Nope. If these leaks are to be believed, the tablet is going to carry a rather lofty unsubsidized price tag of $799.99.

The news comes from a “tipster” over at Android Central, complete with a sheet featuring the minimum advertised price of the Xoom and other devices, all subsidized and a heck of a lot cheaper than Motorola’s upcoming tablet.

The CHOBi Cam One is a Tiny DSLR

CHOBi Cam One

I wouldn’t recommend that you pick up one of these if you want the quality of a DSLR in the form factor of a point-and-shoot, but the CHOBi Cam One is definitely the smallest DSLR I’ve ever seen. The Cam One even has interchangeable lenses, all of which are small enough to fit in the palm of your hand, or even on your fingertips.
Before you assume that a gadget this small couldn’t possibly take photos or video, know that the Cam One can take VGA video at 640-pixels by 480-pixels and 30 frames per second, and takes still photos at 1600-pixel by 1200-pixel resolution. Even though the Cam One is tiny, it still has room for a microSDHC card, and supports up to 32GB.
You’ll have to fly across the Pacific to get one or make friends with an importer – the Cam One is only available in Japan at the moment. It retails for about $121 USD, and will almost certainly appear in spy movies in the near future.

iPad 2 Coming February 9th – Rumor

ipad_2_february_9_rumor.jpg

It certainly feels like the iPad 2 is coming in the next few weeks? In the wake of CES’s massive tablet lovefest, we’ve seen a parade of iPad rumors, all seemingly pointing to the fact that Apple would be unveiling something soon. And besides, Apple’s fairly regular release schedule pointed to a late January event (the first iPad was announced on January 27th of last year).

Here’s another interesting little potential hint. In the second beta of iOS 4.2, a thumbnail seems to actually give away the release date of the new tablet. In the past version, the iOS, the old calendar icon had a big “27” on it–the day in January that the last iPad was released. The new icon, meanwhile, spots a big “9.”

Could Apple be releasing the new iPad on the 9th of February? Seems like a long shot, sure, but in the world of Apple rumors, everything is fair game.

LaCie Intros Luxury Flash Drive

Galet.jpg

With the price of flash drives falling, here’s an idea: let’s think of a way to pay more for them. LaCie has partnered with Christofle to produce Galet, a flash drive with a pebble shape and a silver plating. It’s a conversation piece and a thing of beauty. Oh, and it can also store files. It comes with 4GB of storage.

Each piece is hand-crafted in France and individually plated with silver using Christofle’s 150-year-old silvering process. Then, each one is inspected for a smooth finish and radiant polish. It comes packed in a gift box at the factory in Paris. You’ll even get some software with your purchase: each Galet includes LaCie’s Private-Public software with password protection. Are you charmed yet? If so, scrape up $130 and visit the LaCie Web site.

This Tank is Controlled by iPhone

TankBot

If you have some spare cash in your pocket, an iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch, and an affinity for tanks and/or robots, TankBot is a robotic toy that can sit on your desk when not in use, but can storm the front between HR and Sales when you need to reclaim some territory.
TankBot is controlled through an iOS app, much like the Parrot AR Drone, and uses your iOS device’s accelerometer to roll forward, backwards, or make turns.
Simply tilt your iPhone forward and TankBot starts moving ahead. Tilt your phone to the left, and TankBot makes a left turn. If you’d rather let TankBot do its own recon, you can set it to autonomous mode and let it go exploring. It’ll avoid obstacles and interact with the people it encounters all by itself. TankBot will be available in June and retail for just under $20.

The Kensington PowerLift Props and Charges Up Your iPhone

Kensington Powerlift

iPhone and iPod docks are a dime a dozen, but the new Kensington PowerLift is a dock that’s designed to fit you just right. The dock is a compact package with a 30-pin dock connector on one side, a kick-stand for your iPhone on another side, a battery under the hood, and a USB cable tucked into the top.
The dock connector folds out to the angle you want to keep your iPhone propped up to, and the kick-stand folds up to keep your iPhone in place and propped up.
The USB cable folds out from the base of the dock and connects to either your power brick or your computer for charging and syncing, but you may not need it thanks to the PowerLift’s built-in 1200 mAh battery, which can give your iPhone a boost when it’s running low. When not in use, the PowerLift folds up into a small square brick and packs away nicely. It’s available for pre-order from Kensington for $49.99 list price.

Playboy Hits the iPad–Is Apple Softening Stance on Adult Content?

hug_hefner.jpg

Is Apple loosening its strong anti-adult content stance? Playboy founder Hugh Hefner announced via Twitter today that his magazine’s content–all of it–will be hitting Apple’s popular tablet.

“Big news!” the robe-clad magazine magnate tweeted. “Playboy–both old & new–will be available on iPad beginning in March.” The content, Hefner confirmed in a follow up response, will be “uncensored,” including the “whole magazine from the first issue to the latest.”

Apple–particularly CEO Steve Jobs–has barred all adult content from its App Store. Last April, Jobs famously told the press, “You know, there’s a porn store for Android. You can download porn, your kids can download porn. That’s a place we don’t want to go–so we’re not going to go there.”

No word on Apple’s end whether the company will be “going there” with Playboy.
