An eBook Reader For Comics

energy_color_book.jpg

Energy Sistem knows the quickest way to this tech writer’s heart: comic books. The Spanish company today announced the release of a new color eBook reader, the Energy Color Book, and they’re talking up the thing’s ability to read comics. Well played, Energy Sistem.

The reader can display full color books and videos and can play MP3s while you’re reading. It comes in 2-, 4-, and 8GB capacities and features a microSD slot for expanded storage.

The reader is a bit on the small size–the screen is only five inches. It’ll run you 129 € ($181). That’s a lot of comics.

Frends Headphones: Designed, Tested by Pro Snowboarders

frends headphones classic.jpg

Dude. Those headphones are totally rad. Do the kids still talk that way on the slopes? If so, you could hear that in reference to a new line of headphones and earbuds designed by a group of seven pro-snowboarding friends — one of who is Olympic medal-winning Scott Lago. The hip-looking earphones range in price from $29.95 for earbuds, to $59.95 for headphones.

These earphones are rugged, and have been tested by the Frends crew for durability. According to Frends, “We test our gear on the mountain, at the party, in the Jacuzzi, in the mean streets–we make sure that by the time you get a product from Frends, it’s perfect. We don’t want to look like chumps, so we’ve made sure our products are legit. Nothing’s worse than when a friend lets you down, and here at Frends–that just doesn’t happen.”

Nothing is worse than when a friend lets you down. How true. Frends headphones come in four different styles, and in a variety of designs for each style. The Classic, and the Alli are both headphones, though the Classic covers more of the ear (see photo above). The Coupe, and the Clip are earbuds. Every Frends headphones feature the brand’s custom mic, which works as a play/pause feature in addition; and a fabric cord, which alleviates the frustrating cord-tangle problem that so many of us have suffered from.

Frends believes in using earth-friendly materials. “Using recycled corrugated cardboard and biodegradable plastic helps to satisfy our tree-hugging inner neo-hippy souls,” the group said on its site.

You can check out Wearefrends.com to find stores that sell Frends headphones. You can also buy them online at Zumiez.com. [Via Thrillist]

Creative Launches Two Tablets for Audiophiles

Creative_ZiiO _Tablet.jpg

Is anyone else starting to get a bad case of tablet fatigue? Creative today announced the ZiiO Pure Wireless Entertainment Tablet, a consumer Android slate that will come in both seven- and 10-inch varieties. The tablets, like most of Creative’s devices, are decidedly music-focused.

The ZiiOs feature 800 by 480 pixels and 1,024 by 600, respectively. They both run Android 2.1 Éclair and Creative’s X-Fi technology, which promises to “intelligently restor[e] lost detail and enhances your digital audio content to amazing clarity.” Built-in Bluetooth 2.1 lets users stream audio to compatible headphones and speakers

The tablets do more than just music, of course–they’ll also play movies and compatible games (app from the Android Market, we assume), all with that aforementioned lovely sound quality.

The seven and 10 inch tablets start at $278 and $332, respectively. They both come in 8GB and 16GB. The seven inch version is white and the 10 inch version is black.

Daily Gift: Mini Robo Vacuum

mini robo vacuum.jpg

If only we lived in a world where we could actually have robot-maids like Rosie from The Jetsons, or those creepy butler robots from Sleeper. Okay, so technology has advanced enough to give us Roombas to vacuum our floors for us, but what happens when you’re eating a flaky croissant at your desk at the office and realize you’ve created an ant’s dream? Do you clean it up yourself?

The answer is no. The Mini Robo Vacuum will be your new robo-BFF. He’ll sit upon your desk, and, with the simple push of a button on top of his tiny head, he’ll clean up all the messes you make. This little robot takes 2 AA batteries to sweep up your debris. The Mini Robo Vacuum comes in red, black, or a rather R2-D2-ish gray.

You can get it now for $20 at Fredflare.com. But, lucky for you, Fredflare is having a holiday preview sale. Enter code “flare” at checkout to receive 30 percent off sitewide. This deal ends on November 15, and cannot be combined with any other offer.

Dolphin Hates iPads

dolphin_toughbook.jpg

I don’t know how much stock you take in the opinions of cetaceans–if
you’re a Douglas Adams disciple, for example, odds are that you take their
opinions pretty seriously. And while he doesn’t claim to speak for a whole
species, Merlin the dolphin, a resident of Puerto Aventuras in Mexico, has come
down pretty firmly on the whole tablet debate.

Put simply, Merlin doesn’t care for the iPad.

The bottlenose had been using Apples tablet since June, identifying objects
on the screen by touching them with his nose, as part of the SpeakDolphin
project, an attempt to bridge the communication gap between dolphins and
mankind.

Merlin’s trainers decided to switch things up recent, seeing
which tablet the sea mammal prefers. The answer, as it turns out, is the
Panasonic Toughbook.

“He was more comfortable with the Toughbook experience,
which offered greater screen visibility and sensitivity,” DolphinSpeak
president Jack Kassewitz told the press. “We were able to hold the Toughbook
notebooks closer to the water and our bodies, which makes the dolphin more
comfortable and willing to interact and learn.”

The iPad may have the human market cornered at the moment,
but Panasonic has just opened up an entirely untapped demographic.

Daily Gift: Star Trek Enterprise Pizza Cutter

StarTrekPizza.jpg

I imagine that there’s a pretty healthy overlap in the Venn
diagram of pizza lovers and Star Trek fans, and the clever kids over at Think
Geek have done a pretty great job splitting the difference.

The Star Trek Enterprise Pizza Cutter is a realization of
the true purpose of that big round thing atop the NCC-1701 Enterprise–cutting delicious
pizza pies. The cutter is made of stainless steel and features a laser-etched four inch blade and a zinc alloy body.

The utensil is an officially licensed Star Trek item, but it’s
only available through Think Geek for $24.99. Here’s something for the Star
Trek fan in your life who has everything–save for an amusing way to break
homemade pizza into smaller portions.

HyperMac to Rebrand to HyperJuice, Stop Selling Batteries Today

CES - HyperMac - iPod BatteryAn e-mail from Sanho Corporation CEO Daniel Chin announced this morning that HyperMac, the embattled external battery company sued by Apple in September, would be rebranding itself as “HyperJuice” as part of that ongoing legal wrangling with Apple. At issue are the MagSafe connectors used in its HyperMac external battery packs for the Mac and the dock connectors used for the iPod, iPhone, and iPad.

The company also used the opportunity as a reminder that they would stop selling their HyperMac external battery packs with MagSafe connectivity to MacBooks and MacBook Pros entirely at midnight tonight, November1st. HyperJuice will still continue to sell the battery packs alone, just without the Apple-specified power-connector that will hook up to your Apple laptop’s MagSafe charging port. Whether the company will survive at all in the long run or smooth over relations with Apple remains to be seen, but if you’re looking for a HyperMac external battery pack for your Macbook or Macbook Pro, tonight’s your last chance to get one.

Viewsonic Launches Windows 7, Android Tablets

viewpad_10_7.jpg

I won’t lie to you–Viewsonic doesn’t jump out at me as the ideal manufacturer for consumer tablets. Sure, the company knows displays and has ventured into the PC market more than once, but one wonders what will set the company apart in a space so dominated by a single company (Apple) with what seems like dozens of companies battling it out for second place (HP/Palm, RIM, Samsung, et al.).

The company this week announced that it will bringing two new tablets to our shores–the Viewpad 7 and 10. The former offers a 7-inch multi-touch screen with 800 by 480 resolution and ships with Android 2.2. The tablet also has front and back cameras and Wi-Fi and 3G on-board, plus 512MB of built-in memory, which can be expanded via microSD card.

The Viewpad 10, meanwhile, features a 10 inch a 1024-by-600 screen and dual boots with Android 1.6 and Windows 7 Home Premium. There’s a 16GB hard drive built in, a 1.66GHz processor, and a 1.3MP Webcam for video conferencing. It’s certainly the more business-minded of the two devices.

The Viewpad goes on sale later this year for $479. The Viewpad 10, meanwhile, will ship next year for $629.

The Quirky Contort USB Hub Helps Manage Your Cable Clutter

Quirky Contort USB HubAnyone can make a USB hub, and anyone can make a cable management gadget, but the Quirky Contort brings the two together in an elegant and functional package. The Contort is a 4-port USB hub in the shape of a spool, with a thick flexible neck that keeps the Contort from bending or flexing too much around your computer’s USB port. You can plug your keyboard into the Contort and then spool excess cable around it so you only leave as much as you need on your desk, and then plug in additional peripherals to the USB ports on the sides.

If you’re not familiar Quirky, members of the community discuss which products they really think should be real, design them, and design and fund the build of the product from the ground up. If there’s sufficient demand for the product in or outside of the community, the product starts shipping, and the people who pre-ordered it are first in line.

The Quirky Contort is in the “Presale” phase, which means Quirky is seeing if enough people are willing to pre-order it before they start manufacturing it. You can pre-order one now for $29.99, but if you wait until the product starts its first run, you’ll pay $34.99, so you might want to order now.

iPad Porn Made Easy With FleshDrive

stevejobsplush.jpg

If there’s one thing that Steve Jobs hates more than Adobe’s Flash, it’s naked people on his beautiful devices. The executive has infamously cracked down on the presence of adult material in the iPhone’s App Store, even going so far as to censor the worlds “boobs” and “booty.”

Of course there are workarounds. For starters, there’s the fact that any device that can freely access the Internet freely can freely access porn. A number of sites have even gone so far as to optimize adult content for the device.

And then there’s the FleshDrive, creators of the adult-oriented flash drive of the same name.

Says the company’s VP, Michael Gruosso, “In a world where a certain company President has looked down upon the adult industry, it is the consumer who decides if they want to watch porn on their iPads. It was important to our company that we developed a creative way to make this happen.”

The device works with the iPad Camera Connection Kit (“also a great item for your digital cameras,” says FleshDrive, enthusiastically), letting users transfer smut directly to the tablet.

The content works without an Internet connection, obviously, which should make it great for watching hardcore pornography on the bus or a plane. “Take the convenience of the iPad with The FleshDrive and you have a porn match made in heaven,” says Gruosso.

I must have missed that part during Sunday school.
