Managing files on a computer is something users do a lot of on a daily basis. Whether it be organizing music and photos or hunting down a document that you can’t seem to find…we all do this kind of stuff on a daily basis. Sure you could use Windows Explorer to do the dirty work, but many of the power users out there flock to the xplorer2 application because of its large feature set.

One of the most prominent features that xplorer2 offers is the dual-pane navigation of your computer (pictured above). As you can imagine this is extremely handy for copying and moving files from one location to another, and when you close xplorer2 it will remember what locations you had open in each of the panes. If the dual-panes aren’t enough to satisfy you then maybe the ability to have tabs in each pane will quench your power-hungry navigation:

xplorer2 Tabs

xplorer2 conquers one of the most annoying issues that I have with Windows Explorer: creating a new folder. In Windows Explorer there I always have to right-click, go to the New menu, and then click New Folder. Why is this not located at the root of the menu or better yet where’s the hotkey for it? xplorer2 not only puts it at the root of the menu but also assigns the F8 key to creating a new folder. Don’t like that hotkey? Assign a new one to it in the extensive keyboard customization utility:

xplorer2 Hotkey Customization

xplorer2 is actually offered in two different flavors: Lite and Pro. The Lite version is completely free for personal and academic use, but it lacks some amazing features that the Pro version includes. Here are some of the things that you can do in the Pro version that the Lite version doesn’t offer:

  • Save and restore tabs
  • Multi-column sort (using shift+column click)
  • Individual folder settings
  • Search for text in office and PDF documents using filters
  • Search within archives, FTP, webfolders, and more
  • Search for text using regular expressions
  • Customizable info bars (status bar for each pane)
  • Mini- and densely packed thumbnails
  • Deep synchronization (including subfolders)
  • Detect duplicate files & cleanup
  • Robust background file transfers
  • Color coding of filenames based upon a custom pattern (ex. by file extension)
  • Keyboard (hotkey) customization

–The Giveaway–

We have 10 licenses of xplorer2 (valued at $29.95 each) to giveaway today! All you have to do is drop a comment below providing both your name and email address in the appropriate fields. We obviously need your email address for contacting you in the event that you should win. Believe it or not we’ve actually had winners in previous giveaways get randomly selected, but since they didn’t provide an email address we had to pick someone else.

Just as with all of our giveaways we will be using a random number generator to determine the winners. For this round here is how we’re going to give out the licenses:

  • 1 winner will be picked from comment numbers 1 through 5
  • 1 winner will be picked from comment numbers 1 through 10
  • 8 winners will be picked from comment numbers 1 through however many comments there are.

Entries for the giveaway will be accepted up until December 4th at 5:00PM Central Time.

Hey, you love winning stuff, and we love giving it away. Joshua Topolsky recently spent part of the weekend cleaning out his office (always a fiasco), and as a result, we’ve got a huge amount of stuff to give away. So huge, in fact, that we’re not even going to tell you what you could potentially win — just that we’ve got three large and heavy boxes of stuff to give away to three lucky winners. We will tell you however, that there’s some good stuff to be had in there! The usual rules apply (and you can find them after the break), so get commenting and good luck!

Giveaway: DVDFab Platinum – DVD Copying

This article was written on December 03, 2007 by CyberNet.

Do you like being able to backup/copy the DVD’s that you own? There are all kinds apps to help you to copy the DVD’s, but often times you need to use multiple tools to get the job done. Some people use one program to copy a video to their computer, another program to shrink it so that it will fit on a regular (single-layer) DVD, and then another one to burn it back to a DVD.

DVDFab Platinum does all of that, and more! It has several different options for copying a DVD including the full disc, just the main movie without the trailers or anything, or you can even split a DVD-9 (dual-layer) movie onto two different DVD-5 (single-layer) discs. If you split a DVD onto two discs you’ll prevent the loss of quality, which is important to a lot of movie goers out there.

One of the more interesting options that I haven’t seen in other DVD copying applications is the merging of multiple videos. That’s used for taking, for example, season 1 and season 2 of a television show and compressing them to fit on a single DVD. You’ll probably only want to do this if you’re using dual-layer discs otherwise the quality will probably start to noticeably suffer.

DVDFab Platinum also has several different encoding options for converting DVD’s into a more portable format. In just a few clicks you can have a DVD ready to go on your iPod, PSP, cellphone, and more. More advanced users will enjoy the variety of configuration options that are available:

Win a ticket to the Greener Gadgets Conference!

Hey, the third annual Greener Gadgets Conference is going off in New York City on February 25th, and we’ve got a couple tickets to give away! (We only ask that you don’t enter unless you absolutely know you can attend the conference on February 25th, which we’ll confirm before awarding the prizes.) In addition to speakers from Autodesk, the MIT Media Lab, the U.S. Green Building Council, Dwell, and Treehugger, the show will feature great keynotes from Yves Behar of Fuseproject, the SF design studio behind the OLPC XO, and Robert Fabricant, vice president of creative for Frog Design. The whole shebang then closes out with the incredibly popular Greener Gadgets Design Competition, which brought us the amazing Tweet-a-Watt last year. Obviously we’ll be there, so make sure to say hi if you see us, okay?

We’ll be notifying winners on Friday, but if you just want to get some tickets, you can hit the read link and use the registration code “BLOG10” for a $50 discount.

The rules:

  • Leave a comment below. Any comment will do.
  • You may only enter this specific giveaway once. If you enter this giveaway more than once you’ll be automatically disqualified, etc. (Yes, we have robots that thoroughly check to ensure fairness.)
  • If you enter more than once, only activate one comment. This is pretty self explanatory. Just be careful and you’ll be fine.
  • Contest is open to all residents of the 50 States, the District of Columbia, and Canada (excluding Quebec), 18 or older! Sorry, we don’t make this rule (we hate excluding anyone), so be mad at our lawyers and contest laws if you have to be mad.
  • Winner will be chosen randomly. Two winners will receive one (1) ticket to the Greener Gadgets Conference. Approximate retail value is $275.
  • If you are chosen, you will be notified by email. Winners must respond within three days of the end of the contest. If you do not respond within that period, another winner will be chosen.
