Google+ adds embedded posts and expands authorship in search results

Google adds embedded posts and expands authorship in search results

Following in the footsteps of Twitter and Facebook, Google announced today the introduction of embedded posts for Google+. As you can see in the picture above, the drop down menu at the top of each G+ post now offers the option to embed; clicking the “Embed post” link summons a pop-up screen with an easy-to-use code. Text, photo and media posts are fully supported, and embedded content comes with the full range of Google+ functions, so you can +1, follow and comment with relative ease. Additionally, the company is integrating Google+ with its authorship program, starting with WordPress and Typepad. So, the content you create for either platform will be linked to your G+ account if you sign in with Google, and your profile will be linked to in search results. Google Glass update adds ‘vignettes,’ sound search and more

Google Glass update adds 'vignettes,' sound search and more

Glass still isn’t quite ready for the consumer, but Google’s wearable platform just keeps getting better and more powerful thanks to frequent software updates. Today’s version bump brings YouTube to your search results and also grants access to those with Google Apps accounts. It also brings the Shazam-like Sound Search from Android to your head-mounted display. Most interesting though, is Vignettes, which allows you to lay your current Glass display over a photo to produce an image like the one you see above. Think of it like a screenshot tool for your real, very nerdy life. One can only imagine that eventually Vignettes will get a video mode, but for now its still photos only. If you’re one of the lucky Explorers you can download the update now. The rest of you will have to live vicariously through the photos at the source.

Google+ Posts Can Now Be Embedded

Google+ Posts Can Now Be Embedded

Google+ has received two new features today, embedded posts is one of them. Google says that they’ve added this feature to expand user’s audience across the web. Public Google+ posts can now be added to websites. Posts with all kinds of content, like pictures, text and other media, are supported. The embedded posts are fully active, so visitors can comment and +1 and even follow the post’s owner inline, straight from the embed box. To embed a Google+ post, one needs to find a public post and select Embed post from the drop down menu. A code is automatically generated which only needs to be copied and pasted on to a website.

The other feature is the expansion of author attribution in Google Search. Google’s authorship program links an author’s work which shows up in search results to their Google+ page. The feature offers greater attribution for authors across the web. Authors who use WordPress will see their picture and profile next to links to their posts in search results if they sign in using Google+. This feature is actually being piloted with WordPress and Typepad, Google says that it is also working with a number of other websites such as WikiHow and About.com.

Facebook, Google And Yahoo Petition To Reveal FISA Requests

Facebook, Google And Yahoo Petition To Reveal FISA Requests

It hasn’t been long since former CIA technical analyst Edward Snowden leaked a cache of top secret documents which alleged that the NSA was obtaining user data from major internet companies. The companies named in those documents included Facebook, Google, Microsoft and Yahoo, among others. Most of these companies denied knowing about the PRISM program. Its no secret that the U.S. government does make requests for user data under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act or FISA. The companies aren’t allowed to disclosed what sort of requests have been made under FISA. These three companies have petitioned the government to allow them to reveal FISA requests to their users, so that they can provide more transparency to the users.

Rob Bell, Yahoo’s General Counsel, wrote that withholding information about such requests “breeds mistrust and suspicion — both of the United States and of companies that must comply with government legal directives.” Colin Stretch, Facebook’s General Counsel, wrote in a statement that the company believes there’s more information that the public deserves to know. He also said that the information will help foster an informed debate on whether or not the government backed security programs “adequately balance privacy interests when attempting to keep the public safe.” It remains to be seen if the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court decides to allow companies to make government data requests public.

Google, Facebook and Yahoo petition court to disclose government data requests

Google, Facebook and Yahoo petition court to disclose government data requests

It’s not every day you see Google, Facebook and Yahoo aligned on a issue, but a push toward increased governmental transparency is just the sort of cause that’ll put competing web companies on the same outraged page. All three noted today through their respective channels that they’ve filed petitions with the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISC) to disclose the number of requests the government has issued for user data under national security statutes. Says Yahoo general counsel Ron Bell:

We believe that the U.S. Government’s important responsibility to protect public safety can be carried out without precluding Internet companies from sharing the number of national security requests they may receive.
