Well, that insane ASUS MARS II card we got to feast our eyes on back in June has finally started rolling off the assembly line. That means it’s time for the hardware fanatics and gaming freaks to start putting them through their paces. HotHardware said the dual GTX 580-packing card was “quite simply the fastest single graphics card we have ever tested, bar none.” And everyone else seemed to agree. Now, obviously there are drawbacks — the 3GB card is an absolute power hog (requiring 600-watts all by itself) and insanely pricey at $1,499. You could even buy three separate GTX 580 cards for slightly less, use the same number of slots and get better performance, but the MARS II has one other thing going for it — status. Only 999 of these beasts will be made. After they’re all snatched up you’ll have to head to eBay, and pay a hefty premium over it’s already absurd price. But, if you absolutely have to have the best performance you can out of a single card solution, this is the clear choice. NVIDIA, Fusion-io and HP drive a dozen 1080p streams on four displays at SIGGRAPH (video)

A dozen uncompressed 1080p video feeds, simultaneously running off a single workstation. Yep, you’re looking at it. NVIDIA’s showcase piece here at SIGGRAPH was undoubtedly this wall — a monster that trumps even Intel’s CES wall in terms of underlying horsepower. A relatively stock HP Z800 workstation was loaded with the NVIDIA QuadroPlex 7000 Visual Computing System (that’s four GPUs, for those counting) in order to push four HD panels. A pair of Fusion-io’s ioDrive Duos were pushing a total of three gigabytes per second, enabling all 12 of the feeds to cycle through with nary a hint of lag. We’re still a few years out from this being affordable enough for the common Earthling, but who says you need to wait that long to get a taste? Vid’s after the break, hombre.

NVIDIA’s Project Maximus takes multi-GPU mainstream, ‘Virtual Graphics’ takes it to the cloud

NVIDIA just wrapped up an intimate press briefing here at SIGGRAPH 2011, where — amongst other things — it officially took the wraps off of two major initiatives. Project Maximus and Virtual Graphics are the two main topics of conversation here, and while both are obviously targeting working professionals at the moment, there’s no question that a trickle-down effect is already on the company’s mind. With Maximus, the outfit plans to stop recommending bigger GPUs to pros, and start recommending “a light Quadro GPU and as large a Tesla as you can get in the system.” The overriding goal here is to make multi-GPU technology entirely more accessible; to date, it hasn’t exactly been easy to get a finely tuned multi-GPU setup to the masses, but it sounds like a good deal of future flexibility (it’ll be “nearly infinitely scalable”) aims to change that. Just imagine: dynamic coupling and decoupling of GPUs depending on user load, at a far more detailed level within the application…

Update: Regarding that Tesla bit, NVIDIA clarified with this: “What we’re saying is for applications that are light on graphics / don’t place a heavy demand on graphics, but more so a heavy demand on computational tasks, users will have an option to choose an entry- or mid-level Quadro card for graphics functions, such as the Quadro 600 or Quadro 2000. For certain applications, better performance is achieved by adding a Tesla companion processor, as opposed to scaling up the primary Quadro graphics. Users still require as much graphics as possible.”

NVIDIA’s Kepler GPU still (kinda, sorta) on schedule for 2011 debut

Back in September of last year NVIDIA pledged that the successor to Fermi, Kepler, would arrive in 2011. Since then, things have been rather quiet on the next-gen GPU front. In fact, rumors have started to circulate that the 28nm-based chip would be pushed back to 2012. Turns out those rumblings aren’t entirely inaccurate. While the latest polygon pushing silicon will start being churned out before it’s time to buy a new calendar, final products won’t start shipping until next year, as a company rep told TechSpot. Kepler’s descendent, Maxwell, is still expected to land sometime in either 2013 or 2014, but there’s plenty of time for that timetable to slide back a bit too.

External Thunderbolt graphics card for Macs to be developed soon, thanks to Facebook poll

Dubbed the ViDock Thunderbolt, this device will soon begin to dramatically improve the performance of today’s Apple machines. Running at speeds of up to 10Gb/second, the new T-Bolt model can move data much faster than the company’s current Express Card-connected external GPU. So if you’re rocking the new MBP model, but you’ve got a hankering for more power out of your graphics card, you better start saving your Benjamins.

WebCL scores first demos, GPU accelerated apps headed to your browser

Look, WebGL is great and everything but, in the era of general-purpose GPU computing, we know our 3D chips are capable of much more than just pushing pixels. WebCL is a new standard that brings OpenCL processing to the browser, leveraging the power of your graphics card to perform complex computations. Samsung and Nokia have both released prototype plug-ins, with Sammy’s running exclusively in Safari on OS X using NVIDIA chips and Nokia focusing on the 32-bit Windows version of Firefox 4 and AMD GPUs. At the moment, the young technology doesn’t offer much to the average user, but demos (after the break) show just how much faster OpenCL can be than traditional JavaScript — more than 10-times quicker on some tests. AMD Llano desktop APU gets reviewed: the best integrated graphics in town

AMD is due to release a batch of new Llano APUs next month that are specifically tailored to desktops rather than laptops. The most powerful among them will be the 2.9GHz A8-3850, which has already caused a stir on the review circuit for one simple reason: it pulls off a brutal “one shot one kill” on Intel’s HD 3000 integrated graphics. AnandTech raised an impressed eyebrow at the fact that all its benchmarking games were playable on the $135 AMD chip, which roughly doubled frame rates in titles like Modern Warfare 2, Bioshock 2 and World of Warcraft compared to the more expensive Sandy Bridge i5 2500K. TechSpot declared the APU its “new budget king,” with graphical performance “on another level” compared even to an i7.

However, the superlatives quickly evaporated once reviewers shifted their focus to the CPU. TechReport spotted that pure CPU performance per dollar was actually lower than what you’d get from a lowly i3. Moreover, it reckoned you’d only have to spend an extra $70 to buy a much more powerful CPU and a separate graphics card — an option that comes “awfully close to making the A8-3850 seem irrelevant.” Ouch. Nevertheless, if an affordable processor with integrated graphics is what you’re after, then it’s fair to say this one sets the standard. Click the source links below for full reviews.

Sony’s ultraslim 13-inch VAIO Z laptop revealed in Europe, packs external GPU for power on demand

Turns out those leaked shots we saw of Sony’s new VAIO Z laptop were right on the money as the company showed it off officially today for the European press. The specs reveal a 13.1-inch “ultramobile” notebook that comes in at under 1.2kg with a 2.7GHz Intel Core i7 processor, 256GB SSD, 8GB RAM, 1600×900 screen and sheet battery borrowed from the earlier VAIO S for up to 7 hours of computing. Onboard it features only Intel’s HD Graphics 3000 solution but the VAIO Z beats other ultralights with its Power Media Dock, which contributes the power of an AMD Radeon 6650M GPU with 1GB of dedicated memory connected via “the architecture codenamed Light Peak” — Sony can’t call it Thunderbolt — when more polygons have to be pushed. The dock sports one USB 3.0 hookup plus additional USB, VGA and HDMI ports, and a slot for either a DVD or Blu-ray drive. There’s no word on a price yet, but it is promised to ship by the end of July in Europe so if the full specs (included after the break) are appealing then you don’t have much time to save up.

Update: Head over to the Sony UK site to configure one yourself — pricing starts at £1,434 ($2,294) with a Core i5 CPU, 4GB of RAM and no PMD. The dock is a £400 ($640) option with no optical drive included, while upgrading to a 1080p 13.1-inch LCD is a mere £40 extra.

NVIDIA teases a pair of mystery laptop GPUs running Crysis 2 (video)

Did someone say controlled leak? NVIDIA’s come clean about the fact that it has some news to share tomorrow, but until then, it’s being oh-so demure about what it has up its sleeve. Behold, an unnamed GPU — two of ’em, in fact! — running Crysis 2 in SLI mode. What you see in the short clip below is the DirectX11 version of the game running at 1080p resolution with tesselation enabled and a high-resolution texture pack. All told, the game appears to play smoothly, even with the settings cranked to the max. So just what is this thing? Looks like we’ll find out in the morn, folks.
