Hasta La Gadget!

The VUDU web based architecture is evidently really paying off, because this makes the third VUDU update in the last month. The company tells us that since its UI is pulled from the web like any other website, it can continue to easily roll out updates. This week’s addition is a welcomed one, as we’ll no longer have to reach for our computer or handheld just to look up the details of a movie on Wikipedia. But what’s even more useful is the fact that you can browse beyond the movie’s Wikipedia entry to the actor’s pages, etc., and links are even added so you can quickly get back to actor’s list of movies available on VUDU. We haven’t been able to try this for ourselves yet, but it does sound like something we’d find useful. Of course the only thing left to add now that Wikipedia and Rotten Tomatoes are accounted for is IMDB, which can’t be far behind — right, VUDU? It’s taken ASUS a while, but there’s finally an Eee PC with more than 600 pixels of vertical resolution — the new Eee PC 1005HR sports a 10.1-inch 1366 x 768 display, which is good enough for 720p HD. Of course, it’s debatable whether or not the 1.6GHz Atom N280 and integrated GMA 950 graphics can actually make decent use of that much screen, but at least you’ll be able to rock some huge spreadsheets. Or at least you’d be able to if you were in Japan, where this unit was found — there’s sadly no word on availability or pricing Stateside. Check a video after the break.

Eldar Murtazin, the man/legend behind Mobile Review has snagged one of those already leaked SE Kurara handsets, and he’s got some juicy info to share with the rest of us. Apparently, the CPU on that little goer is a Cortex A8, backed by 256MB of RAM and a PowerVR graphics processor. It’s no surprise then that the HD label we saw earlier has been corroborated by 720p video recording and playback capabilities, and the Symbian S60 interface is said to “fly.” Eldar promises fuller impressions and more imagery by tomorrow, and indicates the second half of February as the likely landing date for the new handset, with a price point around €500 ($745) in Europe.

Remember the Samsung P2370HD monitor? Well, this is it at 27 inches. How’s that for concision? Oh, you want more — well, Samsung must’ve expected you to, because it’s also added a TV tuner and a HDMI input to its latest Full HD display, to go along with a 5ms response time and a 50,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio. There’s also a pair of 3 watt stereo speakers that can simulate 5.1 channel sound — good for emergencies or if you just can’t stand speakers cluttering up your desktop. Filling out the goodie bag are Picture In Picture and Picture By Picture modes, which should make good use of the extra real estate on the screen by combining, for example, your desktop with a TV source. The price is set at 549,000 Won (or about $473) for Korea, though global availability looks imminent so don’t rush to import it just yet.

Oh, brother. Here we go again. Just over a year after Nintendo’s own Reggie Fils-Aime denied the existence of a forthcoming Wii HD, the bigwig is having to make that very same denial again. Naturally, a few new rumors of an HD-enabled Wii have surfaced since that fateful day in October of 2008, and with the recent price drop, it made sense to think that the Big N might actually be looking ahead. Instead, it seems that it’s perfectly content selling hundreds of thousands of consoles that want nothing to do with modern amenities like “HDMI,” “1080i” and “things that the PS3 and Xbox 360 have offered since day one.” The man’s exact quote?

“I don’t know how forcefully we can say there is no Wii HD.”

And Reggie, we don’t know how much more forcefully you can continue to break our hearts.
