Michelle Obama Takes NORAD Santa Phone Calls

alg_obamas_oprah.jpeg

You’d think that the Obama family would be doing all right financially these days, without Michelle having to pick up a night job. The First Lady was on the phones yesterday, however, taking calls for NORAD as part of the missile defense system’s 55 year tradition of Christmas Eve Santa tracking.

Obama took calls for about 40 minutes yesterday at Peterson Air Force Base, while her presidential husband took their daughters to the Beach. Obama’s participation marks the first time a First Lady has pitched in for NORAD’s annual event. Her presence took most callers by surprise.

One ten-year-old caller took the opportunity to ask the First Lady about her husband. “He’s a pretty good guy,” she told the young caller. “I mean, it’s a tough job and sometimes you want to do everything you can to help him, but it’s pretty easy being married to him. He’s kind of funny – fun to hang out with.”

NORAD Christmas Eve Santa Tracking Begins

norad_santa_plane.jpg

Merry Christmas, everyone. The lists have been assessed. Twice, in fact. The naughty have been weeded out from the nice, and now it’s time for jolly old Saint Nick to get down to what he does best (aside from the whole cookie and milk thing): delivering presents.

If you just can’t wait for tonight to get in on the Santa action, good news–NORAD is tracking the jolly old fat man, as it has for the last 50 years, ever since a Colorado-area Sears store accidentally printed the contact information for the missile defense organization under a listing for Mr. Claus.

Things are a lot different than they were in 1955, of course–thanks to social networking, it’s now possible to track Santa’s every move (just like it is with the rest of us non-holiday icons). NORAD is utilizing Twitter, Facebook, and Google Earth to track Santa’s deliveries tonight. You can find all of that info over on the official Santa Tracking page.

The Best Geeky Christmas Tree Decorations

Thumbnail image for enterprise-ornament.jpg

One of the best parts of the holiday season is visiting all your friends’ houses and checking out their Christmas trees (or Chanukah bushes) covered with unique ornaments that make you ooh and aah. To keep with the holiday spirit, we decided to make an imaginary Christmas tree full of the nerdiest ornaments we could find. Why cover your tree with normal Christmas lights when you could have Yoda lights? And why buy those regular, ol’ ball ornaments, when you can buy a Star Trek Enterprise one?

After the jump, we rounded up some of the best geeky Christmas ornaments on the Web. Feel free to share your own nerdy ornaments with us in the comment section below.

Daily Gift: Nook Color

NookColorGift2.jpg

If you are looking for an ebook reader for the bookworm on your list, but you want something a little special, that does just a bit more, without going so far as an iPad, the Nook Color with its vivid, color ebook reading experience and some tablet functionality would be the perfect choice.

Barnes and Noble finally gave the world the color ebook reader it has been begging for with the release of the Nook Color back in November. It’s bright, 7-inch LCD screen with 16 million colors and intuitive touch-based navigation displays book illustrations and periodicals like the hardcopy versions.

Plus, this ebook reader runs a version of Android 2.1 and is preloaded with some apps, a few games, such as chess and crosswords, and Pandora Internet radio. To add to its tablet-like functionality, the Nook color also comes with a browser. So you can listen to music while reading, or when you need a break from reading, you can check some things online or play a game. It also offers some social aspects to the ebook reading experience by letting you share recommendations, passages from within books by posting them to Twitter or Facebook, and even entire books with your friends through the Barnes & Noble’s LendMe application.

Our friends over at PCMag.com reviewed the Nook Color and gave it an Editors’ Choice for color ebook readers. I’m sure any bookworm would love to flip though the pages of this device this holiday season. It’s available from B&N for $249.

Daily Gift: Design Your Own Laptop Case with Caseable

caseable.jpgDon’t you just hate getting (and giving) gifts that are super impersonal? There are only so many journals or bath soaps you can own in a lifetime. If you don’t want to get your friend or family member another gift card this year because you want to get them something that actually means something to them, then there are ways to personalize products that are normally impersonal — take a laptop bag, for instance. You could go to the Apple Store or Best Buy and buy a generic laptop case if you want, or, you could decide to use your own design to keep your loved-one’s computer safe, while still maintaining that person’s style.

caseable, a small Brooklyn-based startup company, allows you to design your own laptop cases (Timbuk2-style). caseable lets you design every part of your laptop sleeve: front, back, zipper, side, and handle. You can choose solid colors, pre-loaded photos and designs, or you can upload your own photos. Shown above, I uploaded my own photo from colorful Colorado, changed the zipper color to maroon, and the side to green, and the handle to orange, and voila! Plus, it was extremely easy to do.

You can choose from a multitude of sizes, including Mac 13-inch to Mac 17-inch, as well as Mac Air, and then from PC 10.1-inch to PC 17-inch (iPad is on its way). Then, in terms of width, you can choose from classic or slim. I tried building a few different laptop bags, and no matter what options I changed, it always came out to $69.90. Yes, this is a little expensive for a laptop bag, but how many laptop bags do you have with your cute dog’s face on it? Not many, I assume.

And, according to the site, caseable is now offering free shipping for a limited time.
