Razer Nabu SmartBand Offers Mobile Notifications and Band-to-Band Social Connectivity

Razer has pulled the covers off something a bit different for it at CES 2014. The new product isn’t a gaming mouse, keyboard, or headset. Rather the Razer Nabu SmartBand is a compact wearable device meant to interface with your smartphone and more.

The device will provide notifications from your smartphone on its small OLED screens. The outer public icon screen shows the user incoming calls, texts, emails, and app updates via notification icons. The private message screen on the inside of the wrist gives detailed info on texts emails, and more that only the user needs to see.

The Nabu also has advanced sensors for data tracking with location information, bio data feedback for steps and more, as well as sleep data. One of the more unique features of the Nabu is that it allows band-to-band communication capability to find nearby friends and other users based on settings that are defined by the wearer. Razer plans on offering the Nabu to developers first to see what sort of innovative apps they can develop for the device.

The Nabu supports Android and iOS smartphones. The developer price for the Nabu is $49(USD) with the retail price to be set later.

Signal RP1 Full-size iOS Controller Fights Screen Smudge and Hand Cramps

SteelSeries opted to make their upcoming wireless iOS controller as small as possible, perhaps to keep it as portable as the devices it will pair with. A new company called Signal is taking a different route. Its RP1 is about the same size and form as gaming console controllers.

signal rp1 ios controller 620x413magnify

As you can see the RP1 looks a lot like an Xbox 360 controller, except its analog sticks and d-pad have a PlayStation-style setup. Aside from that, it has all the buttons and triggers you’d expect from a console controller, down to the triggers under the analog sticks. Like the Stratus, RP1 will connect to iOS 7 devices via Bluetooth, although Signal has not specified which of Apple’s devices it will work with.

With more and more console and desktop games being ported to iOS, I’m sure a decent number of iOS gamers will want to have a full-size controller like the RP1. But at this point I don’t think you should get one of these just yet, because like all announced iOS controllers the RP1 has a retail price of $100. This is Apple tax at its worst. Hopefully that number will descend from la-la land once more controllers are released.

MTV Launches Optimized TV EverywhereMTV achieved quite a success with their video viewing app that rolled out in June last year, and today, MTV has the honor of being the first TV network to roll out a fully optimized TV Everywhere/authenticated viewing experience on the mobile web platform. In a nutshell, fans are able to watch full episodes and seasons of hit MTV series like “Teen Wolf,” “The Real World Ex-Plosion” and “Girl Code” directly on their slew of iOS and majority of Android devices out there in the market. Bokeh is different from typical blogging services because, as Zhang explains, it’s “designed to be more for remembering than broadcasting.” I suppose you can think of it as a digital diary of sorts.

Minesweeper Sweeps Its Way To iOS And Android Platforms

Minesweeper Sweeps Its Way To iOS And Android PlatformsI am quite sure that anyone who grew up using Windows 95 all the way to Windows 2000 and beyond would have had the experience of playing with some of the more basic games on that desktop operating system – Minesweeper, Solitaire, Hearts, and perhaps Pinball. Minesweeper in Expert level often requires you to make a guess right at the end, and I swear that the game was programmed to make you lose at that point in time regardless of which square you flagged. Having said that, it proved to be an effective time killer, and we are glad to announce that Minesweeper has now made its way as a free download on both Android and iOS platforms.

The Android version of the title arrives with a similar retro 90s greyish look, although it will introduce a web leaderboard in order to keep track of how good you are in sweeping mines, not to mention featuring integration with Google Play Games. A ‘Noob’ mode has also been thrown into the mix for those who have not played Minesweeper at all in their life, where it lets you get into the game quickly. As for the iPhone version of Minesweeper, it will feature different skins, letting you choose from the classic or other colorful options, with it being able to synchwith Apple’s Game Center.

SteelSeries Stratus Wireless Gaming Controller for iOS7: No Touching

The first two iOS 7-compliant controllers extended the battery of your iPhone or iPod Touch. But they needed to connect to your device to work and were flat out incompatible with iPads. Enter SteelSeries with what seems to be the best iOS 7 controller yet, the Stratus Wireless Gaming Controller.

The Stratus connects to compatible iOS devices via Bluetooth 2.1. It lasts up to 10 hours per charge and has all the inputs you’d find on a console controller, including two analog sticks and four shoulder buttons.

The face buttons and shoulder buttons are even pressure-sensitive. That feature’s actual usefulness is up to game developers though. The controller does have a few drawbacks. First off, it’s tiny. That will be a good thing for some people, but if you have large hands the Stratus is going to be uncomfortable to use.

The image below shows the Stratus in the hands of Kotaku’s Mike Fahey. For the record, he says it “works quite well”, even though the shoulder buttons were too small for his taste.

Mike also mentioned that the controller cannot be used while it’s charging, which he claims can take up to 2 hours. Then there’s its somewhat limited compatibility. The Stratus will work only with the iPhone 5, iPhone 5S, iPhone 5C, 4th generation iPad, iPad Air and the 5th generation iPod Touch running iOS 7.

But perhaps the worst aspect of the controller is its price. SteelSeries has priced the Stratus at a whopping $100 (USD) for US customers and €100 for those in Europe. I guess I’ll just stare at Bastion’s icon for now.

Microsoft Launches iOS App Update For Xbox Music Streaming

Microsoft Launches iOS App Update For Xbox Music StreamingMicrosoft has just launched its new iOS app update for the Xbox Music streaming service, although it would see the introduction of just one feature in this particular update. While one update might sound like a paltry amount, this does not mean that it is of no use at all. No sir, this update is a big one, where the new 2.0.31213 version of Xbox Music on the iTunes site will now allow users to be able to listen to their playlists while they remain offline. This will certainly be more than welcome news for those who sign up for the Xbox Music Pass, where they can now access their songs should there be no online connection available at that point in time.

As at press time, we do know that the Android version of the app has yet to receive such an update that will boast of this particular feature. This particular update for the iOS app is a positive move by Microsoft as the software giant works to expand the reach of the Xbox Music service in recent memory. Heck, there was even a web-based version that was launched sometime last year. For those who have yet to enjoy the iOS app for Xbox Music streaming, now might be a good time to start.
