TomTom iPhone Car Kit returns to UK Apple Store, awaits drama

It’s back. After making a horrendous false start with the early promise of iPod touch support and the inclusion of the iPhone App in its £100 price tag, the TomTom Car Kit has returned to the Apple Store. In a big fat disclaimer, TomTom writes:

The TomTom app for iPhone is not included with this TomTom Car Kit. The Car Kit dock is compatible with all iPhone models, but the TomTom app only works with iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G.

We only see it in the UK store at the moment but it’s likely to pop on your local store anytime now. Ships in 1-2 weeks.

[Thanks, Joe W.]

Telus joins the fun, gets itself an iPhone this November

Not that we’re surprised, but Bell isn’t the only Canadian carrier stealing the iPhone exclusivity limelight from Rogers. Telus is proudly proclaiming on its home page that it, too, will have the iPhone 3GS in November. No word on prices, but we doubt the companies will stray too far from the current trends. Now that the playing field’s a bit more even, may the best carrier (or the one with the best advertising, at least) win!

Bell nabs iPhone deal in Canada, ends Rogers’ reign of terror

It’s official, Bell and Apple have agreed to sell the iPhone 3G and 3GS in Canada starting November. The move ends the Rogers exclusive in while christening Bell’s new 3G network with Apple’s darling. Hmm, first O2 lost it exclusivity then Rogers, we’re sensing a trend.

[Thanks, Sean]

iPhone headed to Telus and Bell’s fancy new HSPA networks next month?

Rogers is losing its iPhone exclusivity in Canada next month, if a new report by The Globe and Mail is to be believed. Telus and Bell — traditionally CDMA-bound — have been prepping GSM networks of their own in a joint effort, and it sounds like they’ll be getting this off on the right foot with the iPhone 3GS as a launch device. Nothing’s official just yet, but those in the know expect an announcement tomorrow or Wednesday. Rogers isn’t the best-loved carrier in Canada, and a bit of choice never hurt anybody, so this seems like pretty good news all-round for our friendly northern neighbors

iPhone Coming to Vodafone in UK, Ireland

The floodgates, it seems, have opened on the iPhone in the UK. A day after announcing that Orange will be getting the device in the country, one more carrier has thrown its hat into the Apple handset ring. Next year, Vodafone will become the third company to sell the iPhone in the UK, joining Orange and O2, the latter of which has had an exclusive contract for the device the past two years.

No word on an exact date for when the phone arrives on the carrier in the UK and Ireland, beyond “early 2010.” Handset and data plan prices also have yet to be announced for the iPhone 3G and 3GS.

Vodafone nabs iPhone in prelude to UK price war

Now that O2 has lost exclusivity, everyone’s getting in on the iPhone action in the UK. First it was Orange, now Vodafone has inked a deal said to have been signed only last night as a defensive move to stave subscriber defections. The new agreement sees Vodafone selling the iPhone 3G and 3GS to the UK and Ireland in early 2010, a bit later than the Orange Apple expected before Christmas.

Update: Official Vodafone UK statement now live.

iPhone 3G and 3GS to be offered by Orange UK — official

Well well, turns out rumors sometimes do come true. The widely speculated end to O2’s exclusivity of the iPhone is now upon us and Orange is the first competitor to throw its hat into the ring. The company has not yet released tariff pricing, but there’s a tantalizingly small release window, as availability is promised “later this year.” At least there’s finally some competition when it comes to the iPhone in the UK, and we can also probably look forward to T-Mobile joining in on the fun. Let the price war begin!

iPhone MMS is now live!

All you’ve gotta do is plug that iPhone 3G or 3GS into iTunes, run the teensiest of updates, restart the phone, and you can at last make that fashionably late entrance into the 21st century you’ve always dreamed of. That’s right folks, MMS on the iPhone is live on AT&T at last.

TomTom clears up iPhone car kit slip: £99.99 for the hardware alone, app sold separately

Oh, brother. TomTom just hit us up with the real details on its iPhone car kit slip this morning, and we’ve got a feeling you won’t like what it has to say. It confessed that the posting was indeed a mistake, and thus, the pricing was also incorrect. If you’ll recall (c’mon, it wasn’t that long ago), the Apple store listing explained that the £99.99 car kit included the iPhone app, when in reality, that price definitely does not include the app. Jump on past the break for TomTom’s official statement, which now curiously states that the “iPhone 2G” will be compatible with the car kit, yet doesn’t mention the iPod touch at all.

New study says Palm Pre second only to iPhone 3GS in mindshare

Market research firm Interpret recently made some discoveries about public perception of smartphones that should shock, surprise, and amaze you. The just released report, dubbed “Signature Smartphones: Gaining Mindshare in Order to Gain Market Share,” reveals that despite being massively disadvantaged in the marketplace, Palm managed to nab a huge chunk of mindshare with the Pre — in fact, the report suggests that the Pre is number two only to the iPhone 3GS in the metric. The study looks at the driving factors behind purchaser’s decisions to buy a smartphone, narrowing down the list to three major components: belief that the phone is “smart,” belief that the phone is “hip / cool,” and belief that the phone will make them more productive. Rating a swath of phones (BlackBerry Curve and Storm, G1, iPhone), the report found that only the iPhone and Pre balanced the three factors in a way in which consumers felt the higher price tags were warranted. More to the point, only the Pre and the iPhone 3GS managed to strike that balance at all; offerings such as the two BlackBerrys were lopsided. There’s not much more meat to the study, though it does shed some interesting light on just how Palm managed to squeeze its way back into the limelight (of course, it doesn’t hurt to have a product that’s actually kind of cool). Check out the whole PDF for yourself over at that read link.

Disclosure: Engadget columnist Michael Gartenberg is an employee of Interpret, and worked on the study cited above.
