Why the camera isn’t the culprit for the white iPhone 4’s delay (update: Woz responds)

Unless you’ve been away from the Internet over the last few days, you would’ve no doubt heard about Woz’s special appearance at the Engadget Show on Sunday. Unsurprisingly, a few websites ran with some quotes that they pulled from our interview — specifically, the highlight was Woz “confirming” that the white iPhone 4 was indeed delayed due to camera issues. Well, I don’t think this is the case at all. In fact, I’m sure there are plenty of other good reasons for why Apple’s been delaying the much anticipated flavor of its flagship smartphone, but the camera just isn’t one of them. Head right past the break and all will be explained.

Update: Our man Woz has just responded in the comments:

I said plenty to make it clear that I know nothing of Apple’s reasons for rejecting anything ever. I told how when I got my white iPhone 4 assembled I tested the flash photos and they did indeed have problems. I spoke of testing flash photos versus non-flash ones and comparing flash photos between my white and black iPhones. I don’t recall saying that it was a ‘reason’ Apple rejected the parts although I had read that.

For the last part, we were referring to 0:55 in the interview video after the break, but now that Woz has spoken, it could’ve been a joke at the time that got misinterpreted by some websites. They tend to do that with Woz. Read on!

Verizon iPhone 4 on General Sale February 10, Reserve One February 9

iPhone4Verizon.jpg

If you’re not a Verizon customer or you don’t want to wake up at 3 a.m. tomorrow morning to fight all the other Apple fanatics for “a first come, first served” pre-ordered iPhone 4, you can get one next week. Apple just announced that the Verizon iPhone 4 will be up for general sale on Thursday, February 10th at 7 a.m.

If you want to make sure you get your hands on an iPhone 4, qualified customers can order an iPhone 4 on Verizon through the Apple Store for delivery or r in-store pick up beginning February 10. On the 10th, it will be available to the masses at Apple’s retail stores, online at the Apple Store, on verizonwireless.com, at select retail partners, at more than 2,000 Verizon Wireless Stores, or by calling 1-800-2 JOIN IN.

So, if you want it, go get it!

Verizon iPhone will go on general sale at 7AM on February 10th, you can reserve one on February 9th

Apple has just announced that tomorrow morning’s early Verizon iPhone pre-orders will be available through its online Store as well — starting at 3AM, available to current VZW subscribers only, and sold on a first-come, first-served basis. More pertinent news, however, can be found deeper in the company’s press release, which states that pre-orders will be opened up to the general public on February 9th, when you’ll be able to reserve or have one delivered on launch day, February 10th. Shops will open their doors early, 7AM — matching AT&T’s early opening for the iPhone 4’s original launch way back in June — and availability will be broad, encompassing Apple’s brick and mortar Stores, Verizon’s 2,000+ retail locations, select partners, and even a zany 1-800-2 JOIN IN phone number you can call. So, really, the only people left without a Verizon iPhone on February 11th should be those that don’t actually want one.

Super Bowl XLV Media Day: Packers split on iOS / Android, Cowboys CIO talks mobility

We woke up this morning in Dallas to 20 degree temperatures and a parking lot covered in ice. Not exactly the kind of weather the NFL was hoping for when it selected the new Cowboys Stadium to host Super Bowl XLV, but it didn’t stop both teams and media from making their way — however slowly — to Arlington for Super Bowl Media Day. Naturally, the likes of ESPN were there in full force, but rather than picking apart defensive schemes and seeing who could outgun Troy Polamalu for the longest mane in North Texas, we spent our time asking about mobile OS preferences and soaking up knowledge from Cowboys CIO Pete Walsh. With a price tag well north of $1 billion on the new Cowboys Stadium, the home to the world’s largest HD display is certainly one of the most technologically advanced in the world. It’s packing 884 wireless access points throughout (not to mention an internal network operations center that constantly monitors activity on each one), 260 miles of fiber optic cabling, capacity to handle over 100,000 simultaneous wireless connections, over 3,100 IPTVs and micro cell towers for each major carrier within — you know, so that kickoff video that just can’t wait actually sees its way onto YouTube prior to the start of the second half.

Head on past the break to catch of a video of us talking smartphone platforms with Green Bay Packers center Scott Wells, as well as a lengthy (and insightful) interview with the Chief Information Officer of the Dallas Cowboys. Everything from the Cowboys’ rejection of FanVision to their hopes to blanket the stadium with gratis WiFi is covered, and we’re even given a hint that contactless payments and mobile food ordering systems could be just a season or so away.

Apple releases iOS 4.3 beta 3 to developers

No word on what’s inside it just yet, but Apple has just released iOS 4.3 beta 3 (build 8F5166b) to developers, so we’re sure we’ll be getting plenty more details soon enough. If recent beta versions of the OS are any indication, there’s likely to be at least a few surprises in there.

Update: It turns out it’s not specific to beta 3, but App Advice has discovered that iOS 4.3 includes another new feature that hasn’t been documented so far: the ability to cancel App Store downloads.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Apple: White iPhone Still on Track for Spring Release

white-iphone-4.jpg

After a half year’s worth of delays, the long-awaited white iPhone popped up again in the blogosphere today after Apple cofounder Steve Wozniak shone some light on the mystery device, confirming rumors that it was, in fact, a camera problem that caused Apple to continually delay the device.

Wozniak also told interviewers that the white iPhone is, in fact, coming soon. The company confirmed that fact with us today. Apple told PCMag, “As we’ve said before, we plan to release the white iPhone 4 in the spring.”

So, there you have it. The Woz don’t lie.

Verizon turns on iPhone 4 pre-order countdown, existing customers can order on February 3rd at 3AM

The grapevine did already hint at the timing of the Verizon iPhone 4 pre-orders, but now, to be absolutely sure nobody misses them, we have a countdown! Eager iPhone bandwagon jumpers will have to stay up till 3AM EST on February 3rd to get their orders in from a “reserved quantity” of handsets, which will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis — presumably to be delivered on that February 10th launch date everyone’s been anticipating for so long. Sadly for Verizon newcomers, a contract with the network will be a prerequisite for signing up when the countdown expires.

[Thanks, Jarrett and Anthony]

Verizon iPhone Trade-In May Not Be the Best Choice

Thumbnail image for verizon iphone press 3.jpg

To add even more AT&T iPhone customers to the already large amount of people switching phone services to Verizon in order to get the iPhone 4, Verizon is letting some AT&T customers trade in their iPhones for credit when they buy a new Verizon iPhone 4 and sign up for a two-year contract. It may seem like a good idea, but WalletPop.com’s Aaron Crowe points out that the trade-in value isn’t as much as the amount the same phone could sell for on the secondary market.

Crowe said in the article that various iPhones in excellent condition could be sold at Gazelle.com, for example, for $15 to $80 more than the credit that Verizon is offering towards a new phone. So, ultimately, you have to decide whether you’re willing to go through the hassle to sell your phone on a secondary market and get more for it, or just take the easy route and have AT&T throw you some credit towards your new phone.

Either way, if you’re dropping AT&T you’re going to have to pay the $325 early termination fee, and there’s no way around that.

WalletPop lists the trade-in prices Verizon is offering, followed by the latest price at Gazelle.com for the same phone in excellent condition:

  • iPhone 2G 16GB: $60 at Verizon; $80 at Gazelle
  • iPhone 3G 16GB: $105 at Verizon; $120 at Gazelle
  • iPhone 3Gs 32GB: $160 at Verizon; $180 at Gazelle
  • iPhone 4 16GB: $280 at Verizon; $360 at Gazelle
  • iPhone 4 32GB: $360 at Verizon; $420 at Gazelle

So, the choice is yours. Ultimately, you’re loosing money by breaking your AT&T contract. The question is, do you want to loose more money, or slightly less money?

Apple Sued Over Dropped iPhone

iPhone-4-shattered.jpg

Remember glassgate? We covered it back in October of last year. It was something of a less successful sequel to the much more widely covered antennaegate. Glassgate, essentially, surrounded the ease with which the glass on the phone cracked. The story as we covered it back then, involved the rear glass on the device. When dirt or other particles worked their way in between the iPhone 4 and a case, scratches led to a shattered phone.

Glassgate is rearing its ugly ahead again, this time in the form of a class action lawsuit. Donal LeBuhn, a California resident, filed the suit after his daughter dropped the phone from three feet, shattering it, despite the presence of a protective bumper (a result, no doubt, of the aforementioned antennaegate)–and despite Apple’s claims that the material on the phone is “ultradurable” and “the same kind used in the windshields of helicopters and high-speed trains.”

LeBuhn took the phone to a non-Apple repair shop to save $50, voiding the warranty in the processes. The irritated iPhone owner is suing for attorney’s fees, monetary damages, and to force apple to replace damage glass and refund the cost of replacement.
