Video Earrings Are Small LCDs That Hang From Your Earlobes

Considering how much we enjoy taking our content on the go as we can play games, watch videos and listen to music all from our mobile devices, we wonder what took so long to bring this technology to our earlobes. Actually – we didn’t wonder that, but apparently the creators behind Video Earrings did, and have created a product that is pretty much two small LCDs hanging from your earlobes. (more…)

This week’s Tokyoflash watch comes in maple and sandalwood (video)

    DNP Tokyoflash

Tokyoflash’s busy horologists know no bounds when it comes to designing watches. The company’s latest timepiece is an update to last year’s bee-friendly Kisai Zone that sports wooden cases and straps. Each of the three available woods is married to its own LCD color for the screen — dark sandalwood’s is black, red sandalwood goes purple and maple snags a blue readout. Speaking of which, it doesn’t look like anything has changed compared to the first Zone’s watch face. It still features a standard battery that lasts “at least a year,” a funky hexagonal display (hours on top, minutes in the middle and seconds on the bottom) and an Indiglo-like backlight. If you fancy wearing part of a giving tree on your wrist, you can snag one of these for $99 if you act within the next two days.

Acer outs 27-inch WQHD touch display for €799

dnp Acer outs 27inch 4K touch display for 799

Acer certainly takes the cake for most product announcements before IFA’s even officially begun. In addition to outing a new smartphone, tablet, all-in-one (and a few Haswell updates), the company is introducing a 27-inch WQHD display. The T272HUL’s edge-to-edge, 2,560 x 1,440-pixel panel offers 10-point multi-touch, and the monitor’s stand allows you to tilt the display up to 60 degrees. (It’s also wall-mountable, if you’re fancy like that.) A 2MP webcam and an integrated mic are also on board for video calls. Connectivity options include dual-link DVI, DisplayPort, HDMI and three USB 3.0 ports. The T272HUL will retail for €799 in September — just don’t look for this guy to hit the US.

LG Develops World’s First Quad HD AH-IPS LCD Panel For Smartphones

LG Develops World’s First Quad HD AH IPS LCD Panel For SmartphonesLG Display is no stranger when it comes to display technologies, and they have successfully scored another world’s first today with the announcement of their success in developing what they deem to be the “world’s first Quad HD AH-IPS LCD panel for smartphones.” This puppy is no slouch when it comes to visual performance – we are talking about a whopping 2,560 X 1,440 resolution with 538ppi (pixel density), all shown off on its new 5.5-inch Quad HD panel. This would make it the highest resolution and ppi (pixel per inch) mobile panel to date, and it does pave open the road to what is set to arrive after the existing generation of Full HD smartphone panels.

Dr. Byeong-koo Kim, Vice President and Head of LG Display’s IT and Mobile Development Group, said, “LG Display, which pioneered the high resolution mobile market with introduction of the world’s first Full HD smartphone panel in 2012, again opens new possibilities with the successful application of QHD technology. With this breakthrough, LG Display will continue to raise new standards for mobile resolution and lead the mobile display market.” We are stoked to see just what the future holds for smartphone models down the road, and hopefully these new displays would be power efficient too, otherwise the battery would undergo a whole lot of load then.

AOC USB Add-on Monitor Slims Down

A couple of years back, AOC released a compact USB-powered secondary display which could be easily used to extend your computer’s desktop. The $130 display was a pretty good deal then, and now AOC has improved a few features of the original with its recently released e1659Fwu portable display.

    aoc add on display 1

The updated display measures just 0.9″ thick vs. the 1.4″ thick original. The new model has a smartly-designed folding stand which lets you use it in either portrait or landscape modes in a snap. It’s also got standard VESA mount holes this time around. In addition, it transfers data to the screen via a fast USB 3.0 connection, vs. the USB 2.0 connection of the original.

    aoc add on display 2

The 15.6″ display still offers 1366×768 resolution though, and I was hoping they might bump it up to HD resolution this time. Still, it’s a handy thing to throw in your bag if you need extra display space, or if you want to mirror your primary display for presentations. To use it, simply connect it to your PC’s USB port and it works like an extra display. Mac users will need to install the latest DisplayLink driver to make it work though.

    aoc add on display 3

You can find the AOC e1659Fwu portable USB-powered display over at Amazon for $129.99(USD). If you don’t mind the added thickness of the original, it’s available for just $90 now.

You’re Doing It Wrong: LG Unveils Retro TV with Channel and Volume Knobs

We live in a marvelous age. It’s so nice not to not have to get up off your butt to change the channel or turn the sound up. Who wants exercise? Besides, as a species, our fingers are probably stronger than they have ever been, hitting the keys on remotes and using our touchscreens. LG wants to undo all of this progress by introducing a TV that could have come from 30+ years ago.

LG’s 32LN630R (~$750 USD) is a brand new full HD flat screen equipped with a 32 inch IPS panel display. But it has actual knobs on it! How dare they? That front is trimmed with wood and it even has those old-timey legs. Funny thing is, this isn’t the first time LG has tried such shenanigans.

What if I don’t want to leave the couch? Don’t buy it people! I will never go back! You hear me LG? Never! What’s next? An eight-track player in a smartphone? A phonograph in a tablet?

ASUS’ 31.5-inch PQ321 4K monitor gets reviewed: pricey, but luscious

ASUS' 315inch PQ321 4K monitor gets reviewed pricey, but luscious

Let’s be honest: almost no one expected one of the world’s first 4K monitors to be ho hum. After all, it has eleventy gazillion pixels. Er, a native 3,840 x 2,160 resolution, but close enough. The gurus over at HotHardware were able to take the 31.5-inch PQ321 for a spin, and predictably, they loved what they saw. Outside of being duly impressed with how the panel handled everything from Photoshop work to gaming, they were also taken aback by the monitor’s svelte frame. In fact, they found it a little tough to look back on a 1080p screen after a couple of weeks with this thing — it’s like the SD-to-HD revolution all over again. That said, they did confess that the product feels a bit ahead of its time, and the monstrous $3,500 price tag is certainly indicative of that. Feel free to hit the source link for the full spiel, but the long and short of it is this: if you’re in the one percent, buy it.

Sharp posts quarterly loss, but sees sales up 33 percent on mobile LCD demand

Sharp revenue up 33 percent on mobile display demand for Q1 2013

Despite posting a small 15.36 million yen ($182 million) loss, it would be hard to call Sharp’s latest Q1 2013 financial quarter anything but a success after last year’s $1.2 billion debacle. After gaining investment from companies like Samsung and, more recently, Qualcomm, Sharp saw revenue up 32.6 percent to 607 billion yen ($6.2 billion) on strong LCD demand. In fact, sales of small- and medium-sized panels for smartphones and tablets were up a hefty 54.8 percent over Q1 2012, with its electronics division up 46.6 percent overall. The company thinks it’ll hit a net profit for the fiscal year thanks to “high-value” 4K LCD TVs, Aquos phones in Japan and more IGZO displays for upcoming handhelds. If devices like a rumored Retina iPad mini with a Sharp-built display bear fruit, we may just believe it.
